  • What's wrong with "smart quotes" and possibly how to fix it (Vanity)

So, I'm still seeing smart quotes mess up. There was a thread a little while ago whereby I said what the problem was, but it's still extant. Here's the problem: All the web-tier stuff is using UTF-8 (which is a great idea), but *something*, probably the database tier, is using CP-1252. I suspect either: a) Database table for posts on SQL Server is set to collate and/or store the windows-1252/CP-1252 character set. or b) something between the web level and the DB level is doing character set interpretation in an incorrect way. There's 1252 in there somewhere, and that's what's...

MICHAEL WANG, a young Californian, came second in his class of 1,002 students; his ACT score was 36, the maximum possible; he sang at Barack Obama’s inauguration; he got third place in a national piano contest; he was in the top 150 of a national maths competition; he was in several national debating-competition finals. But when it came to his university application he faced a serious disappointment for the first time in his glittering career. He was rejected by six of the seven Ivy League colleges to which he applied. “I saw people less qualified than me get better offers,”...
  • Is it time for "Free-nux"?

Apple supports Homo-Fascism. Microsoft supports Homo-Fascism. As Freeper "Star Traveler" has pointed out, if you work with computers, you are going to end up sending money to a company that supports Homo-Fascism. It occurs to me that we need a way to use computers that does not put money into the pockets of companies that support Homo-Fascism. (And other Liberal causes.) How about a version of Linux that people who believe in Freedom can use to fight back against the Homo-Fascist tech companies? We could call it "Free-nux." Someone needs to start a company that pushes this idea and provides...

The index page of FreeRepublic randomly stops loading in mid sentence in the middle of a thumbnail article of the body. . . And re-loading just finds another random stopping place. Not good fellows. I see you're having issues on pagination in the threads, but this is on the first page of the index.

Odd observation, but it has been seen in six different threads the past few minutes: The thread title, and the usual FreeRepublic title block will display. But only 14 to 18 replies are displayed, and no end-of-thread links nor the usual FreeRepublic lower page links.

Not being able to read and share thoughts during the three presidential debates was painful for me as a longtime FReeper. I really counted on being here with you all, and I did waste an hour for the first two debates attempting to connect. It was frustrating and sad. We were not getting clear responses from Jim either on what was going on. Perhaps no one knew. But with pressure building over the last month, somehow we got them to discover the flaw and just in time. If it were not for Free Republic last night -- and today and...

My computer went south with a nasty virus and had to be completely scrubbed. Now up and running but for some strange reason, I find that the bump to the top here on the forum isn't working. Is it my forum set up or is it the forum that's changed. if it is my set-up, what do I have to do the bring that feature up and running? Thanks in advance.
  • Best Way to Search FR

Just a suggestion for those looking for articles in FR, or for trying to see if an article has been previously posted. Go ahead and use the search tool provided by FR but if you can't find what you need, use google or yippy (I recommend yippy, since google is leftist scum) and type: free republic topic name in the search bar. (Where topic name is the subject or article title or part of article title you're looking for.) I get really good results doing that. (Just a tip.)

I have a suggestion for the software. How about a box that pops up when I'm posting that says something to effect of: Attention, you've been clicking from thread to thread, and you're about to reply to a topic that has been dead for 3 years, are you sure you want to look like an idiot? I for one would find it useful. :)

I'm working at a company where our email is handled by Google Apps the usual way. Where we open browsers to http://mail.OURDOMAIN.com and then we type in usernames (tied to our domain) and passwords. My non-technical supervisor came to me and asked me why he can no longer log into the account with the username of "sysadmin", which has important info we need. After confirming that the username and password did not fail as a result of a typing error, I then sent email from INSIDE our domain to the administrator account at sysadmin@OURDOMAIN.com. I got the first "hard bounce"...
