The Washington Post published a June 28th piece geared to protect Barack Obama from the nagging rumors that he is a secret Muslim, rumors that have been circulating since 2004. The Post's Matthew Mosk penned an attack on Free Republic, based on an Obama flak who claims she has somehow discovered that Freepers are to blame, if not initially responsible, for floating the Barack-is-a-Muslim chain email that so many millions of Americans have found in their email boxes over the last four years. But, the Washington Post's article is so filled with assumptions and a singular desire not to...

McCain Gambles with Awkward Joke June 27, 2008 7:38 AM In an interview with the Las Vegas Sun, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., was asked by columnist Jon Ralston why he didn't choose Gov. Jim Gibbons to chair his Nevada campaign. "I appreciate his support," McCain said. "As you know, the lieutenant governor is our chairman." Why snub the governor? Ralston asked. "I didn’t mean to snub him,. I've known the lieutenant governor for 15 years and we've been good friends," McCain said. "I didn't intend to snub him. There are other states where the governor is not the chairman." Maybe...

The Associated Press is at it again. Not content with attempting to bring about the end of Snapped Shot, my little wire-photo-critiquing hobby, they’re now going after the dastardly news commentators over at the Drudge Retort for alleged copyright violations. Will they ever learn how this Internet thing works? Back in March, I was delighted to receive a love letter from the AP’s legal department, which kindly informed me that they didn’t particularly care for me. You can read all about those travails in the piece I wrote for Pajamas Media back then. (Pun intended.)[snip] [snip]This harkens back to memories...

The Associated Press, one of the nation’s largest news organizations, said that it will, for the first time, attempt to define clear standards as to how much of its articles and broadcasts bloggers and Web sites can excerpt without infringing on The A.P.’s copyright. The A.P.’s effort to impose some guidelines on the free-wheeling blogosphere, where extensive quoting and even copying of entire news articles is common, may offer a prominent definition of the important but vague doctrine of “fair use,” which holds that copyright owners cannot ban others from using small bits of their works under some circumstances. For...

Early on January 22, I posted the following to Free Republic: "In my opinion someone definitely needs to get word to Governor Huckabee that his unholy alliance with Senator McCain isn’t ultimately going to work for anyone, except possibly their Democrat opponents."http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1957488/posts?page=1#25 (post #25) On April 25, this was the featured Huckabee quote at Google News: "Sometimes I got accused of being in collusion with him during the course of the campaign — that we were somehow forming some unholy alliance."http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/politics/5731969.html (fourth paragraph) Did Governor Huckabee get word about the "unholy alliance" or was that just a coincidence?

Jim Robinson has created and maintains a huge treasure trove of news and information here at FreeRepublic.com. He gladly shares it with us Freepers and the rest of the world (a.k.a. - lurkers). And thanks to Jim and staff, FreeRepublic has a fantastic search engine (far surpassing Google), IMHO, due to the plethora of relevant news and information from around the world posted by us Freepers. For lack of a better description, I would classify FreeRepublic as a huge historical news and information database thanks to all of the postings and comments of Freepers (and a few disrupters - ZOT!!)....

I’ve been kicked off the “Free Republic” web site. No more posting allowed. The problem? The results of my brain scan. It revealed I had one — a definite no-no if you’re posting among the “FReepers.” But, seriously…… Have any of you spent any time looking at the “Free Republic” web site? Yikes! If most of the folks posting on this site are what a “Free Republic” produces, then give me Communist Slavery every time. Just kidding— about the “Communist Slavery” crack. But, I’m not kidding about the “Free Republic” site. So, why, seriously, was I dumped? Well, I posted...

The new format for browsing comments includes the entire reply, as opposed to the old format, which had only the titles of the comments. The new way presents several problems: First, because of images, it takes longer to load. Secondly, because of long URLs posted in these replies, all text scrolls off the edge of the screen, making it very difficult to read. Third, it's harder to get a sense of what the hot threads are, because there are fewer per page. Fourth, if someone hasn't read the article, the reply makes no sense, so there's no good reason to...

This morning I logged in to find 118 emails in my inbox. They were "returned mail for error" and each was a porno spam sent by someone using my FR email address. I have no idea how many were sent that reached someone succesfully. Is there someway to prevent/stop this? Thanks.

An unclassified 2006 report by the Strategic Studies Department of the U.S. military's Joint Special Operations University relates the story of how Freepers, followed by others in the blogosphere, took down Dan Rather over the forged Killian memos as a way to demonstrate the growing ability of individuals using the Internet to influence the world at large. The report also discusses the feasibility of "clandestinely recruiting or hiring prominent bloggers" for information warfare and of the reticence the military has toward using the Internet for disinformation campaigns. The report was authored by Maj. James Kinniburgh and Dr. Dorothy Denning. The authors demonstrate...

Anyone else getting proxy errors when hitting the back button and other tabs on FR? I've been getting these errors now for a couple days and have to get to pages through the history. Yes, I'm logged in. Yes, I know FR was down this morning but whatever that reason was it didn't fix the proxy problem.

http://www.indecision2008.com/blog.jhtml?c=v&t=31343&m=105088 As commenter RedRover on Free Republic, the granddaddy of 'em all, put it: OMG that's one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time - and on The Daily Show!? Oooh, someone's gonna have his raisins freeze-dried over this! Well, RedRover, that someone, unfortunately, was me. And even for a liberal with very small raisins to begin with, getting them freeze-dried was no picnic. But at least now I can surrender to terrorism with no second-guessing with and whine at a frequency you would never believe.

Statement by the founder of Free Republic: In our continuing fight for freedom, for America and our constitution and against totalitarianism, socialism, tyranny, terrorism, etc., Free Republic stands firmly on the side of right, i.e., the conservative side. Believing that the best defense is a strong offense, we (myself and those whom I'm trying to attract to FR) support the strategy of taking the fight to the enemy as opposed to allowing the enemy the luxury of conducting their attacks on us at home on their terms and on their schedule. Therefore, we wholeheartedly support the Bush Doctrine of pre-emptive...

We received a copyright infringement notice today from Forbes.com. They requested that we either remove a thread that contained a full text posting of one of their articles or reduce it to a brief one paragraph excerpt with a link back to their source article. We have complied with their request and have added Forbes.com to the excerpt and link only list. My understanding of fair use is that we can quote small amounts of copyrighted works for critiquing and discussion purposes as long as we're not adversely impacting the publisher's market for his works. Our excerpt and link list...

I know Free Republic members overwhelmingly don't want John McCain. He's not my choice. But I was just listening to Glenn Beck saying that Hilary Cinton will be better, that Bill Clinton's election in 1992 was the "best thing" that ever happened to America, that the country will be in such dire straights after four years of Hilary, that a "Churchill" will be needed to sort it out. This on top of Rush's statements and Coulter's.But folks, if Free Republic becomes the "Hilary will be better" site well I don't care if Barry Goldwater comes back and says it, that is...

Description of book: At its heart, this book is a comforting companion and helpful counselor for average Christians interacting with the law, perhaps feeling bewildered, overwhelmed, or uneasy about how their legal situations align with their Christian morals and beliefs. The book is comprehensive in scope, but written in a friendly, conversational tone. The legal topics addressed are carefully selected to cover those most likely to be encountered by regular folks in the course of their everyday lives. By presenting a practical Christian perspective informed by God's rich array of relevant scriptural wisdom, this book will release multitudes of Christian...

Jim Robinson, founder of Free Republic has endorsed Fred. Here’s part of his endorsement: With Fred, we know we’re getting a solid, no-nonsense, commonsense pro life and liberty conservative who will defend the nation, secure the borders, defend the constitution, appoint originalist judges, defend the Bush tax cuts, work to simplify and flatten the tax code, keep social security solvent while providing alternative private accounts, reduce government and spending, and work to return states issues to the states. Imagine that. In fact, he comes closest to being the conservative leader I’ve been praying for all these years. I don’t know...

I was trying to think of all the common phrases that are posted on virtually every thread. I am not sure if there is even a listing on here. Maybe they could be listed here. Here are some examples: We are doomed!!! It's Bush's Fault! It's Global Warming. Search is your friend. (I think this is one)

It seems to me that we are getting a lot of new members and the following may be helpful to them. Live in a solid "red" state and when anybody complains about some asinine law in their blue state, tell them to "just move from there". The simplistic solution is always the best one. Refer to California as Californicate or Kalifornia. The people's republic of (insert state name here) is always good. When an article appears about something negative happening in public schools, proudly proclaim that all your kids are home schooled and geniuses to boot. Extra points if you...

Seven days prior to events which would set the world on-edge, newly-hired Pentagon spokeswoman Victoria "Torie" Clarke offered an equally startling admission to Agency France Presse wire service, but which received scant attention within U.S. media. On September 5, Ms. Clarke--lured back into government service by pal Mary Matalin on Vice President Dick Cheney's staff, from a high-paying post as Manhattan office director for the venerable public relations firm of Hill & Knowlton--the former PR chief to Senator John McCain and one-time George Bush (the elder) staffer would divulge to foreign media that the United States, via the Pentagon and...

An article in USA Today touches on blogging among believing Christians, and remarks on the frequently combative nature of the posts: "For Christ's sake, stop!" declared the president of the Southern Baptist Convention, the Rev. Frank Page, pleading for civility in the Baptist blogosphere. Episcopalians and Anglicans duel incessantly over their faith and future in the Anglican Communion. Catholics focus on every topic from liturgy to law to spirituality. These are faith bloggers -- uncountable voices who contest, confess and consider religious beliefs, doctrines and denominational politics in their posts. Although every faith has its bloggers, U.S. Christians may...

FreeRepublic.com, the eleven-year-old conservative granddaddy of political discussion websites, was rated the most popular political website by Hitwise, an Internet data tracking service, for the week ending November 17, 2007 with 5.14% market share. The liberal site, HuffingtonPost.com, founded two-and-a-half years ago, was the only site that came close to Free Republic in interest from net users, with 4.51% market share. In a distant third place, the five-year-old liberal site DailyKos.com, was left in the dust by Free Republic and Huffington Post, garnering only 2.57% market share. The others sites Hitwise listed were, in order, politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com with 2.17%; townhall.com with 2.1%;...

Karl Rove teed off this afternoon on the liberal netroots, the coalition of far-left blogs and advocacy groups who are a new power bloc in the Democratic party. "The Web has given angry and vitriolic people more of a voice in public discourse," said Mr. Rove, who served as one of President Bush's top strategists until he resigned this past summer, and is a noted technology nut. "People in the past who have been on the nutty fringe of political life, who were more or less voiceless, have now been given an inexpensive and easily accessible soapbox, a blog," Mr....

Checking the inbox of the Gmail account associated with my Blogger blogs, I discovered that I had mail from Sturm, Ruger & Co. It's a "cease and desist" request regarding my username. It seems that they very much want me to stop using it. The company representative very politely informed me that my blogging is confusing some people who think that the opinions expressed in my postings on my several blogs are those of the company. Wow, I never imagined that blogging would bring such notoriety, LOL. The upside is that I'm getting the word about Fred Thompson out to...

Is Free Republic a commercial operation or a charity? Well, here's the way I see it. Free Republic is neither a charity or a commercial operation. It is simply a website. A public political bulletin board, just like thousands upon thousands of other non-commercial, not for profit, public political bulletin boards, only larger. Our participants post and discuss political topics, government topics, constitutional issues, current events and other miscellaneous topics. I operate it as an avocation (a hobby). I was sued by a couple major media players, so I filed as an LLC to gain at least a small ...

WASHINGTON — One gift that Hillary Clinton is unlikely to enjoy on her 60th birthday Friday is the premiere of "Hillary Uncensored," a scathing documentary whose 13-minute trailer has been No. 1 on Google Video since Oct. 10, with more than 1.1 million views to date. The film's first full-length showing is scheduled for Friday night at Harvard University, followed by viewings at universities through the weekend and a wrap Tuesday at the Metropolitan Club in New York City. Among the allegations summarized in the documentary: — Bill and Hillary Clinton solicited cash from Peter F. Paul, an international lawyer...

I see this as a a Chinese blocking sertain Google links' phenomenon. Free Republic Blocked at DOD sites http://realitycheck.blogsome.com/2007/08/13/free-republic/ Just tried to get to FR from work. I’m at an undisclosed DOD installation. It’s been blocked via firewall rules from work. How’s that for censorship? Remember, it’s only censorship if the government does it. I do understand that there is something we’re concerned with called the “Insider threat”, but blocking news sources is dumb and ridiculous. Many of us are already “cut off” from the outside, or limited to viewing only CNN or perhaps FOX (we’re lucky enough to have...

Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton has largely steered clear of traditional radio and television advertising, instead nurturing the Internet audience and drawing the largest number of online visitors. Clinton, a senator from New York and former first lady, had the most visitors to her Web sites in August, almost 760,000, compared to her rivals, but she ran only about 2,200 radio and television spots so far this year, according to Nielsen data released on Monday. Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, who has consistently run second in national polls, was a close second in the number of Web page visitors with...

I have been experiencing a rash of odd FreeRepublic behavior. Every so often, instead of links working as expected (post, clicking reply to FreepMail, etc.) a blank page comes up with simply: Temporarily Unavailable No other explanation. Sometimes it continues to come up repeatedly, while other times, I may only see it once in a session. Anyone have a clue what this might be about? I don't believe it is related to my internet connection, as it has done it to me at work a few times as well on multiple computers.
