  • “A Practice Nook in the Subway” [FReeper published in the NYT]

    04/18/2015 3:38:00 AM PDT · by Silly · 16 replies
The New York Times (Metropolitan Diary) ^ | April 16, 2015 | Paul Klenk
Dear Diary: A singer often in need of a handy practice area, I sometimes vocalize in the subway (in addition to busking). The cathedral-like acoustics of these underground passages are friendly to the voice, and on my lunch break I can loosen my tie and warm up with some scales. I have found a little cul-de-sac perfect for this at a station near work, out of the paths of the Midtown commuters rushing through. Passers-by who hear my tenor coloratura sometimes pop their heads around the corner in curiosity; some smile or wave. But I go there for the architecture,...

Today I put on the uniform for the last time. I was honored that Conor MacNessa and his bride were there to share the day. To recap a 33 year career, I penned the following, all because I raised my right hand so many years ago, titled "No Regrets": I have jumped from high in the sky, and dived deep into the sea I have seen the sun rise from the peak of Mount Sinai, And watched it set into the Mediterranean from the beach at Tel Aviv I have seen the sun glimmering off the snow-covered volcanic mountains of...

The New York Times (Metropolitan Diary) ^ | August 24, 2014 | Paul Klenk (illustrated by Victor Kerlow)
Dear Diary: A New York City busker is the recipient of love, affection, cheers, kisses and souvenirs from around the world. Or, sometimes, a plaintive shrug when a commuter cannot locate a dollar. Once when I was singing in the subway, such a man walked away dejected, then came bounding back, beaming, proudly offering a fresh yellow apple from his groceries. Yes, the money makes a difference, but I’m thankful for it all. Bills spend easily, but coins accumulate. On a recent night I sorted and rolled over a year’s worth. Among them were a British 50-pence coin, two 5-cent...

For many pro-lifers, the high number of babies with Down syndrome aborted purely for having an extra chromosome is not new information. But Steven Crowder has released a heart-wrenching new video that is resonating with thousands of people exposing the tragedy of the special needs abortion holocaust. This video especially hit close to home for me. Seeing that statistic is always a punch in the gut, because it’s a reminder that most people believe my son should not exist. Simply having an extra chromosome is enough to make mothers deprive their children of life, and why? Because it takes them...

Approximately 6,000 babies are born with Down syndrome in the U.S. every year. This number would be much higher, but 90 percent of babies who are diagnosed with Down syndrome in the womb are aborted. Pregnant women can get a screening done that will tell them the likelihood of their child having Down syndrome. Despite the fact that the screenings are not one hundred percent accurate, and the fact that there are hundreds of families on waiting lists wanting to adopt a child with Down syndrome, many expectant mothers choose to end the life of their child after being told...

I heard about fifteen minutes of Rush today, when he talked about how badly the polls were predicting the election results. Is there a business opportunity for an enterprising Freeper to start an accurate polling company? Or do conservative candidates already have access to accurate polling, but it's just the midstream media types who use their own (skewed) polls to manufacture their own agenda-driven news articles?

The fate of a Fort Hood soldier who was arrested in March while openly carrying an AR-15 rifle down a road in Central Texas is now in the hands of a jury. The trial of Christopher Grisham has drawn the ardent interest of gun-rights advocates nationwide. Grisham, an active-duty Army Master Sergeant, was accompanying his 15-year-old son on a 10-mile hike back in March. The hike was part of the younger Grisham’s Boy Scout activities. Grisham and Christopher Grisham Jr. were walking along Airport Road in West Temple, Texas, when they were approached by police officer Steve Ermis. The police...

I thought it might be interesting to see which right-of-center websites actually receive the most traffic. So, I went to Alexa.com and ranked the 50 sites on the right. Do keep in mind thatÂ… 1) Alexa doesnÂ’t distinguish between top level domains and their sub-directories. So, for example, a blog on Townhall and Townhall itself would have the same rating. Additionally, websites hosted at places like Blogspot, which list each blog on a sub-directory, canÂ’t be measured. My guess is that it only knocked 2-4 websites max off the list including Ace of Spades HQ, Gateway Pundit, & Big Hollywood....

Just found out from her son -- he found her on the floor of her bedroom. Kristy had a host of health conditions she'd been battling for literally decades, including progressively severe hypoxemia (low blood oxygen), but still this was unexpected. She was 60 years old. She loved this place, and was quite active on the prayer threads. Kristy and I met on FR six years ago, and over time we became the very best of friends. I loved her dearly. Don't know what else to say, other than my soul feels like it has a gigantic hole in it....
