State and local programs have spent more than $5.1 billion to support the housing stability of vulnerable renters out of the $25 billion allocated under the first round of ERA (ERA1). Since January, state and local programs have made about 1 million payments benefitting households at risk of eviction. In July alone, more than 340,000 households received nearly $1.7 billion in rental and utilities assistance, a roughly 15% increase in households served compared to June, and more than double the number of households served in May. The latest data also demonstrates that ERA funds reached the lowest income tenants, with...

As of June 17, 15 applications had reached the “final review” stage, and payment is currently pending for seven of those applicants, according to a Travis County spokesperson. More than 2,500 people applied through a new application portal in mid-April, after the county received $10.7 million dollars in federal funding to be used for rental assistance. Prior to the launch of this new portal, the county’s Health and Human Services division had already received thousands...

Shortened title. Full title: Minneapolis taxpayers must pay public housing rent for Somalis that spend their income on travel back to Somalia What a deal! Come to the United States, and if you spend your income (even that from welfare and refugee programs) on travel to Somalia instead of paying your rent in public housing, whey the suckers taxpayers of Minneapolis will pick up the tab. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports (via Refugee Resettlement Watch): Public housing residents in Minneapolis will no longer need to pay their normal monthly rent when travel abroad erases their income, a change particularly sought by...

From the outside looking in, Occupy Wall Street's headquarters at Zuccotti Park may look like a clutter of tents and sleeping bags. But just a few blocks away, the so-called Trojan Horse of this well-organized movement is in plain sight. That's where the Occupy Wall Street supply room is located, a stockpile of food, clothing, and medical supplies housed in a former bank on the corner of Broadway and Exchange. "We get anywhere from 100 to 400 boxes a day," protester Saum Eskandandi told NBC New York as he led a tour of the supply room. "People have been sending...
