World number one Rafael Nadal proved he is a class apart on clay as he won a record-equalling sixth French Open title with a dramatic win over Roger Federer. The 25-year-old Spaniard matched Bjorn Borg's tally of victories at Roland Garros with a 7-5 7-6 (7-3) 5-7 6-1 victory in three hours and 39 minutes. Nadal, who has now won 10 Grand Slam titles in total, also ensured he will remain at the top of the rankings ahead of Novak Djokovic. In a thrilling encounter, the Majorcan withstood a Federer fightback after failing to capitalise when two sets and break...

Let the revolution begin. Li Na made history at the French Open on Saturday when she became the first Chinese player to win a grand slam singles title. Her 6-4, 7-6 victory over last year's champion, Francesca Schiavone of Italy, was a performance full of maturity, class and guts and when the pressure came late in the second set, she held firm. If this does not spark a new wave of Chinese players in the years to come then probably nothing will. An estimated audience of 65 million watched the final on television and online in China but the 29-year-old,...

Roger Federer got the best of Novak Djokovic in a four set semifinal victory Friday (7-6, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6) to halt the Serbian’s 41-match winning streak to start 2011 and set up another Grand Slam final matchup with Rafael Nadal. After taking the first set in a tiebreaker, Federer rode an early break to take the second set 6-3. But Djokovic battled back in the third, breaking Federer and capturing momentum with a 6-3 win. Like the first set, the fourth went all the way to the tiebreaker after both men were broken once. Djokovic again found himself in an...

Rafael Nadal won his fifth French Open men's championship with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Robin Soderling on Sunday. The win returns Nadal to the world No. 1 ranking. Nadal has won 22 straight matches and is 38-1 in his career at Roland Garros, including 5-0 in final matches. His only loss at Roland Garros was to Soderling, last year in the fourth round.

Francesca Schiavone defied all odds and became the first Italian Grand Slam singles champion by defeating the Australian powerhouse Samantha Stosur in the final of the 2010 French Open, the year's second major being held in the historic Roland Garros. Schiavone started the match on a good note and kept avoiding any breaks of serve against her till the ninth game when Stosur lost serve and gave the Italian a chance to seal the opening set 6-4. Stosur made a mini-comeback to race to a formidable 4-1 lead in the second set which was soon squandered by Schiavone's strong baseline...

Very exciting match ... Both Williams sisters are out! :):)

PARIS – Samantha Stosur of Australia started strong, pounding the ball from corner to corner and running top-seeded Serena Williams to distraction, but Williams, smacking aces at key moments, would not yield. Their quarterfinal French Open duel lurched forward as a contest of will and power. In the end, it was Stosur who prevailed in a fiercely fought 6-2, 6-7 (2), 8-6 victory to advance to the semifinals. Stosur’s two remarkable crosscourt passing shots — a forehand and a backhand, both on the run — led to her final push, breaking Williams’s serve and stepping her into the lead, 7-6,...

Robin Soderling has played second fiddle to Roger Federer 12 times in his career. Not today. On the grand, soaked stage of Court Philippe Chatrier, the Swede stepped out of the orchestra pit and beat him up in what was without question the most enthralling contest of this French Open so far. It took the fifth seed 150 minutes – and a 75-minute rain break – to crack Federer's will, and the scoreline of 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 tells the story of a very good fight indeed. Last year Federer blew Soderling away in three sets to win the title....

Roger Federer was left shaken yesterday when a crazed intruder raced on to the court and brandished a flag in his face while attempting to put a cap on his head at the start of the second set of the French Open men's final. The man leapt over the barriers at the side of the court and ran straight for Federer, with security officials nowhere to be seen. As security finally arrived, the intruder turned around and jumped over the net before being rugby-tackled and escorted away. You Tube video of the incident and tackle by security at link:

PARIS — In his mind, as Roger Federer imagined over the years and the frustration what it would be like to finally win the French Open, it was probably not quite like this. How could Federer have imagined that the obstacle across the net in one of the most important matches of his life would be Robin Soderling, a relatively anonymous Swede, instead of Rafael Nadal, his left-handed Spanish nemesis? How could Federer have imagined that with him cruising comfortably early in the second set Sunday, an intruder would jump out of the stands and onto the clay, run toward...

PARIS - At last, Ana Ivanovic overcame her stage fright. In two previous major finals, Ivanovic was so overwhelmed by the setting, so shaken by the stakes, that her focus fell apart and her shots went awry. Not on this day. Already assured of rising to No. 1 in the rankings for the first time, Ivanovic collected Grand Slam title No. 1 by beating Dinara Safina 6-4, 6-3 in the French Open final Saturday. Rather than erasing the memories of those lopsided losses in championship matches against Justine Henin at Roland Garros a year ago and against Maria Sharapova at...

The French fans again displayed their lack of class by booing Serena Williams as she left the court after a hard-fought 3 set loss to Justine Hennine. During the critical third set fans cheered for Justine while the ball was still in play. The EU/Chirac inspired crowd also jeered at every opportunity against the American.

It's not even 10:30 on Friday morning and Michael Chang has already sweated entirely through his white shirt. Michael Chang is losing in the first round of most tournaments lately. He works the baseline here in practice on Court 1 at Roland Garros, hitting opposite Yevgeny Kafelnikov, emitting soft grunts -- oooh, uhhh ... oooh, uhhh ... -- as he slides from side to side. Kafelnikov rips a forehand that may or may not have clipped the line and Chang wanders over to inspect the mark. He squints, then sighs and walks back to the baseline. Indeed, it hit the...
