On the Demise of the True Love of Friends in an Age of Lost Innocence Msgr. Charles Pope • January 3, 2016 • One of the casualties of the sexual revolution has been the love that is friendship. The Greek language has several different words for love. The love between friends is phileo, and is different from eros (physical, sensual love), storge (family love), and agape (selfless, sacrificial, unconditional love of God or another). Modern English sadly lacks such distinctions. However, in the past we were pretty well able navigate the different types of love and not read inaccurate motivations into...
  • The Only Thing Some Democrats Like About The Benghazi Select Committee: Trey Gowdy

Democrats have harshly criticized the Benghazi select committee, calling it a political sideshow and questioning Republican motives behind the effort. But what some key Democrats arent questioning is the man who will lead the committee, Rep. Trey Gowdy. While Gowdy is decidedly partisan and one of the most vocal critics of the Obama administration regarding its response to Benghazi, he has built up an enormous amount of goodwill among some of his Democratic colleagues, particularly those hes worked with on the Judiciary and Oversight committees. On the record and in private, Democrats praise Gowdy as fair and forthright. I would...

The illusion social media presents of streamlining friendships may have something to it allowing us to pare down on rote announcements, invites or shares but it hasnt increased our capacity to connect meaningfully on a larger scale, new research out of Oxford indicates. Social media has often been analyzed in regards to its potential to increase our connectivity in terms of binary units of closeness. That is to say, before social media, we physically lacked the capability to have hundreds of friends. So now that there is Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Vine, can we do more friend stuff?...

When Carbonite Inc. stock took a quick plunge this week, there was an obvious consensus about what caused the move: The company pulled advertising from Rush Limbaughs talk-radio program after the controversial host made inflammatory remarks about a Georgetown University law student. Yes, the market could have feared that Limbaughs fans would cancel Carbonites service, an online back-up solution for consumers and businesses, or mount their own boycott. Or maybe investors assumed Carbonite (US:CARB) will suffer because it will no longer have access to Limbaughs audience. Or it could be that investors saw in the release of the companys Form...

Coming in just a little over halfway through, Perry raised $17.1 million. That number would put Perry somewhere between $4-6 million ahead of Mitt Romneys rumored total for Q3, according to this report last week from the Boston Globe. Its also likely to far outpace Herman Cains fundraising or that of the other Republicans currently in the race. The pace is even more impressive. Perry had 49 days in which to raise funds, rather than the full 92...

Friendships are an important part of our lives. Ever since we were young, we have formed these relationships with other individuals and they have brought us times of sadness and happiness, exhilaration and frustration. Some of these friendships have been more shallow and superficial while others have been much more strong and long-lasting. As we grow and mature, we discover that these strong, fulfilling friendships require much effort and work to maintain. Thats probably why most people have so few of them. A gynaecologist is being sued for branding his patient's name on to her removed uterus. Dr Red Alinsod claims the unusual act, using a laser burning tool, was simply a 'friendly gesture' because the female patient was a 'good friend'. However, Ingrid Paulicivic, a 47-year-old hairdresser from California, was not so impressed. She alleges the branding was done for 'no medically necessary purpose or reason' and that she somehow suffered burns on her legs while the uterus was being marked, according to her complaint. Her lawyer Devan Mullins called the branding 'inexcusably bizarre behaviour', adding that the 50-year-old Dr Alinsod...

President Barack Obama is good for the Jews not only because he counts individual Jews among his closest advisers (including David Axelrod and Rahm Emanuel), but also because he is an unprecedented standard-bearer for values that we hold most dear. President Obamas Supreme Court nominations lead us further toward the ideal of an open, mobile, and inclusive society. For the current opening, he could have calculated that having two Jewish members of the Court (Clinton appointees Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer) is more than enough or that two women (Ginsburg and Obama appointee Sonia Sotomayor) are plenty. GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, Michigan -- Some friendships know no limits. Police responding to a burglar alarm at a South Saginaw Road medical facility found an open refrigerator and some missing urine samples. A set of footprints led them to a 26-year-old Swartz Creek man who didn't deny breaking into the facility but said he didn't want to talk about it. Nearby, officers found a backpack with two urine samples inside. But it wasn't his urine, said Genesee County Prosecutor David S. Leyton.

My wife's coworker recently posted a message about an MRI his six year old son recently underwent. Lucas has been having headaches for a while, and the doctor ordered an MRI to see what was going on. Rather than try to paraphrase what he said, I'm just going to quote it. "Thank you for all the prayers. Yesterday was a very long day for us. The MRI went fine and Lucas was a champ. He's a heck of good kid. Before I get to the results, for those of you who know Laura, please don't call her for a while....

I am shamelessly sharing my alternative Obama song. It aims at bathos. I imagine the theme from Rawhide, but I'm not sure of the tune, just the words: The Legend of Obama Travelin the range to make wrongs right Bringing HOPE where nones in sight A bedroll for his bed tonight. Obama! The legend of his hope proceeds him, Hes there when Ayers and Rezko needs him, ACORNS is enough to feeds him. Obama! A lonely man with past unknown, An ego with a microphone, To let his scant career be known. Obama! Dont ask too closely - just elect...

An old schoolmate of mine-Patricia Martone- is hospitalized with a broken hip,and faces a long, painful recovery. Pat is a senior citizen-just a year or two younger than me;and a broken hip at our age is very serious indeed ! Please add Patricia (and her husband Ray,who will soon become her primary caregiver) to your prayers-or,if you don't pray, please send a kindly thought, and best wishes for a quick recovery. Thanks !
