A dear friend of ours has been hospitalized and had emergency surgery this morning. The doctors removed the muscle of his right forearm and most of the tissue around his left hip. They say that he will not be able to use the fingers of his right hand and that he will not walk again. They say the disease will remain in his system for up to six weeks, so his ordeal is far from over. Please pray for him. He is a very, very good and kind man. Our friend is a master electrician, and he is a young...

LAKE STEVENS — Police said two masked, armed men allegedly entered a garage of a home in the Lake Stevens area, confronted the homeowner and his friend there and allegedly attempted to rob them. But the friend was able to pull a gun out of his car and opened fire, hitting one of the suspects and prompting the other one to flee, police said. The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting took place at a home in the 7000 block of 126th Drive NE. “It is believed that two men, the homeowner and a male acquaintance, were in the...
  • Social Media Hasn’t Enabled Us To ‘Scale’ Friend Capacity, Oxford Study Suggests

The illusion social media presents of streamlining friendships may have something to it — allowing us to pare down on rote announcements, invites or shares — but it hasn’t increased our capacity to connect meaningfully on a larger scale, new research out of Oxford indicates. Social media has often been analyzed in regards to its potential to increase our connectivity in terms of binary units of “closeness.” That is to say, before social media, we physically lacked the capability to have hundreds of friends. So now that there is Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Vine, can we do more friend stuff?...

When Carbonite Inc. stock took a quick plunge this week, there was an obvious consensus about what caused the move: The company pulled advertising from Rush Limbaugh’s talk-radio program after the controversial host made inflammatory remarks about a Georgetown University law student. Yes, the market could have feared that Limbaugh’s fans would cancel Carbonite’s service, an online back-up solution for consumers and businesses, or mount their own boycott. Or maybe investors assumed Carbonite (US:CARB) will suffer because it will no longer have access to Limbaugh’s audience. Or it could be that investors saw in the release of the company’s Form...

All we know is that he was in the navy and is old enough to receive social security. Can't find him in Facebook. Would Social Security admin assist in finding someone? Would Veterans Affairs? If they could help what offices should be contacted? Any help from anyone who has ever tried to find someone they want to re-connect with would be really appreciated. Many thanks.

A source on the Rick Perry campaign tells Hot Air that the Texas governor conducted some Texas-size fundraising in the third quarter. Coming in just a little over halfway through, Perry raised $17.1 million. That number would put Perry somewhere between $4-6 million ahead of Mitt Romney’s rumored total for Q3, according to this report last week from the Boston Globe. It’s also likely to far outpace Herman Cain’s fundraising or that of the other Republicans currently in the race. The pace is even more impressive. Perry had 49 days in which to raise funds, rather than the full 92...

Friendships are an important part of our lives. Ever since we were young, we have formed these relationships with other individuals and they have brought us times of sadness and happiness, exhilaration and frustration. Some of these friendships have been more shallow and superficial while others have been much more strong and long-lasting. As we grow and mature, we discover that these strong, fulfilling friendships require much effort and work to maintain. That’s probably why most people have so few of them. I’ve heard many individuals say, on a number of occasions, that they can count the number of good...

Some of these are from my beloved children, some from colleagues and former students, and others from people I barely know. In every case, I have politely declined, explaining that I detest the idea of Facebook and refuse to be emotionally blackmailed into joining it solely to avoid offending them. My first reason for opposing Facebook is the sheer phoniness of it. "Friends" are collected and displayed, like a stud's panty collection in a frat house. The very indiscriminateness of...

A gynaecologist is being sued for branding his patient's name on to her removed uterus. Dr Red Alinsod claims the unusual act, using a laser burning tool, was simply a 'friendly gesture' because the female patient was a 'good friend'. However, Ingrid Paulicivic, a 47-year-old hairdresser from California, was not so impressed. She alleges the branding was done for 'no medically necessary purpose or reason' and that she somehow suffered burns on her legs while the uterus was being marked, according to her complaint. Her lawyer Devan Mullins called the branding 'inexcusably bizarre behaviour', adding that the 50-year-old Dr Alinsod...

President Barack Obama is “good for the Jews” not only because he counts individual Jews among his closest advisers (including David Axelrod and Rahm Emanuel), but also because he is an unprecedented standard-bearer for values that we hold most dear. President Obama’s Supreme Court nominations lead us further toward the ideal of an open, mobile, and inclusive society. For the current opening, he could have calculated that having two Jewish members of the Court (Clinton appointees Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer) is more than enough or that two women (Ginsburg and Obama appointee Sonia Sotomayor) are plenty. My wife's coworker recently posted a message about an MRI his six year old son recently underwent. Lucas has been having headaches for a while, and the doctor ordered an MRI to see what was going on. Rather than try to paraphrase what he said, I'm just going to quote it. "Thank you for all the prayers. Yesterday was a very long day for us. The MRI went fine and Lucas was a champ. He's a heck of good kid. Before I get to the results, for those of you who know Laura, please don't call her for a while....

"Later in the morning, Obama left the house alone, clad in workout clothes, a ball cap and sunglasses, and spent an hour at a friend's apartment building where he uses the gym." So he can't afford a membership to his own gym? This is the 'guy' he slips away to routinely. Guess they had to celebrate... Quiet first day for Obama after his historic win CHICAGO – Barack Obama began his first full day as president-elect with the simple pleasure of having breakfast with his daughters, the type of everyday family activity that he often had to sacrifice during the...

I am shamelessly sharing my alternative Obama song. It aims at bathos. I imagine the theme from Rawhide, but I'm not sure of the tune, just the words: The Legend of Obama Travelin’ the range to make wrongs right Bringing HOPE where none’s in sight A bedroll for his bed tonight. Obama! The legend of his hope proceeds him, He’s there when Ayers and Rezko needs him, ACORNS is enough to feeds him. Obama! A lonely man with past unknown, An ego with a microphone, To let his scant career be known. Obama! Don’t ask too closely - just elect...

An old schoolmate of mine-Patricia Martone- is hospitalized with a broken hip,and faces a long, painful recovery. Pat is a senior citizen-just a year or two younger than me;and a broken hip at our age is very serious indeed ! Please add Patricia (and her husband Ray,who will soon become her primary caregiver) to your prayers-or,if you don't pray, please send a kindly thought, and best wishes for a quick recovery. Thanks !

The region of present-day Georgia contained the ancient kingdoms of Colchis and Kartli-Iberia. The area came under Roman influence in the first centuries A.D. and Christianity became the state religion in the 330s. Domination by Persians, Arabs, and Turks was followed by a Georgian golden age (11th-13th centuries) that was cut short by the Mongol invasion of 1236. Subsequently, the Ottoman and Persian empires competed for influence in the region. Georgia was absorbed into the Russian Empire in the 19th century. Independent for three years (1918-1921) following the Russian revolution, it was forcibly incorporated into the USSR until the...

SDEROT, Israel (Reuters) - U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama assured Israel and its U.S. Jewish supporters on Wednesday he was a friend who would not press for peace concessions that would compromise its security. Hailing Israel as a "miracle," he vowed staunch support and held only a low-profile meeting with Palestinian leaders in the occupied West Bank. Obama, seeking to allay wariness among some U.S. Jewish voters about his policy towards Israel, flew to Sderot, a town hit by rockets fired from the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, saying he hoped to bring peace but would not dictate the terms of...

The deputy to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Saturday that Iran was a friend of Israel, Iranian news agencies reported. "Iran wants no war with any country, and today Iran is friend of the United States and even Israel.... Our achievements belong to the whole world and should be used for expanding love and peace," said Iranian Vice President Esfandiar Rahim-Mashaei, who is also head of the Cultural Heritage Organization. The Cultural Heritage Organization news agency quoted him as saying that even during the eight-year war against Iraq, Iran just defended itself against the military invasion by former Iraqi dictator...
