What President Bush said at Texas Fundraiser (You might as well hear it...)

Remarks at Pete Olson Fundraiser (Partial) July 18, 2008(View clip on YouTube) ... It's uncertain, there's no question about it. Wall Street got drunk, it got drunk, (it’s one of the reasons I asked you to turn off your tv cameras.) It got drunk and now it’s got a hangover. The question is how long will it sober up, and not try to do all these fancy financial instruments. And then we got a housing issue, not in Houston, and evidently, not in Dallas, because Laura was over there trying to buy a house today. (laugher.. Crawford!)VOICE: What about Crawford?...

Gores to host Obama fundraiser Nashville | July 24, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore is preparing to host a Nashville fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, say officials. A spokeswoman for Gore, has confirmed that Al and Tipper Gore have agreed to the event although a date and location have not been set, nor even whether Obama himself would attend, The Tennessean, a Nashville newspaper, reported Wednesday. Wade Munday, a spokesman for the Tennessee Democratic Party, said we would certainly welcome the senator with open arms should he arrive in Nashville before the October...

A Private, Blunter Bush Declares, ‘Wall Street Got Drunk’

When he talks about why the economy is ailing, President Bush often turns to euphemism, citing “challenges in the housing and financial markets.” But Mr. Bush offered a far blunter assessment last week at a closed Republican fund-raiser in Houston: “Wall Street got drunk.” Despite the president’s request that those present turn their cameras off, his comments were captured on videotape that made its way into the hands of Miya Shay, a reporter at the Houston television affiliate of ABC. The video, which also included the newsy tidbit that Laura Bush had begun shopping for houses in Dallas, was broadcast...

McCain praises Hagel on fundraising visit here (Nebraska)

ASHLAND, Neb. - Presidential candidate John McCain may have differences with Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel, but he made it clear Wednesday that he respects his fellow Republican's views on the Iraq war. McCain said that Hagel's criticism of the war, unlike Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's, amounts to an "informed decision" because of the time Hagel has spent in Iraq and studying the issue, McCain said. This was McCain's first campaign trip to Nebraska. The Arizona senator, here to raise money for his presidential bid, praised Hagel and declined to talk about speculation that his Republican colleague and fellow Vietnam...

A San Francisco engineer testified Tuesday in Sacramento federal court that political fundraiser Julie Lee asked him to adopt fraudulent documents to satisfy auditors looking into Lee's use of state grant money. James Li described for a jury how Lee, in the summer of 2004, brought him "a bundle of documents in an envelope and asked me to review them and be prepared to answer questions from state controller auditors." Among the documents, Li told the jury, was a backdated invoice that purported to be from his firm seeking payment of $621,300 from Lee's nonprofit San Francisco Neighbors Resource Center...

CA: Fraud trial to open against Shelley fundraiser (Julie Lee)

The criminal case that brought former California Secretary of State Kevin Shelley's political career to an abrupt halt more than three years ago is scheduled for trial today, as federal prosecutors attempt to prove mail fraud and witness tampering charges against his onetime fundraiser Julie Lee. While the case dashed the lofty aspirations of Shelley - once considered a potential senator, mayor or governor - and took a long time to get to trial, the allegations against Lee are straightforward. Prosecutors have charged her with four counts of mail fraud and three counts of witness tampering for fraudulently obtaining state...

Among his stops: a Newport Beach fundraiser co-hosted predominantly by New Majority members, with an estimated $1 million expected to be brought in for the presumptive GOP nominee. McCain has been talking about his energy policy in the past two days, including during a meeting today with Arnold Schwarzenegger.
A day after Barack Obama claimed the Democratic party's presidential nomination, his one-time fundraiser was found guilty of corruption on Wednesday, a development the Republican party said raises serious concerns about his fitness for the White house. Antoin "Tony" Rezko, a Chicago real estate developer and one-time fundraiser for several politicians including Obama, was found guilty of fraud, attempted bribery and money laundering. Obama figured only briefly in the trial and had severed his connections with Rezko.
