  • Need a Lawn Mower Recommendation (Vanity)

I've just been informed that my second Toro gas powered push lawn mower isn't worth fixing. I know very little about engines and such, so I'm taking the mechanic's word for it. The engine has thrown a rod (I can hear it) and the transmission's shot (that's why I took it to be repaired). Now I have to plead a little a lot guilty. I did not take proper care of the thing. I should have changed the oil, etc., etc. However, before I invest in another lawn mower (which I PROMISE I will take good care of) I thought...

...A letter signed by 40 House members explained the basis for their opposition: “When an agency acts to change the rights of an individual, we believe that the agency must go through the formal rulemaking process. We respectfully request you abandon any further action on this guidance document.” The Property Rights Alliance has long opposed these expansions of EPA power, arguing to the House Transportation and Infrastructure committee in 2010 that the changes “Will not ensure the cleanliness of these waters, but merely serve as another bureaucratic barrier for citizens who wish to use land for development.” Organizations such as...

Unless you haven’t eaten in the past several months, or you already grow all of your own produce, you’ve probably noticed that food prices have been rising dramatically. According to the USDA, the average cost to the U.S. consumer of Lettuce is up 4.5%, and fresh Tomatoes are up 4.7% from the same time last year. The recently released U.S. Labor Department consumer price index survey reports that the price of grains such as corn, wheat and soybeans has roughly doubled since last summer...

You can learn a lot about life through manual labor. A few years ago my wife and I bought a lake house. The lawn was beautifully landscaped, but during the time the home was vacant things had been neglected. As I worked to clean out some flower beds for my wife, I began to clear out some of the weeds that had grown up. The worst of the weeds were the wild blackberries that were choking out the other, more desirable plants. My first plan was to grab them and pull them up, but it didn’t take long to figure...

Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. -Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759 A couple of days ago, I read an article about how police in Michigan (go figure) were forcing motorists to surrender their cell phones upon being detention for traffic violations. They are using the common tactic that most liberals and anti-constitutionalist morons use that "if you have nothing to hide, you'll do what I ask." This, of course, is false logic. That's the question in Oregon this week. The Supreme Court of Oregon is deciding whether having a medical marijuana card that allows medicinal use of marijuana bars that card holder from obtaining a concealed handgun permit. Although some states issue cards making it legal to possess and use medical marijuana in those states, Federal law has stiff penalties for possession. However, the Feds generally seem to be leaving individual medical marijuana users alone and they have been targeting dispensaries in states such as Michigan as traffickers. As is customary for me, I try to provide an initial winter weather outlook around the first of September, just as we begin to think Fall. Why? It comes from my work experience in the private weather industry where critical planning for the upcoming winter takes place during September and October and that is when the winter outlook is so important. This includes the utility industry with regards to their planning on the amount of natural gas and heating oil will be required to heat our homes to local municipalities, state departments of transportation and the local snow plow operator...

The Oakland County, MI Sheriff's Narcotics Enforcement team raided three medical marijuana dispensaries and arrested fifteen individuals for allegedly not complying with requirements for the sale of the miracle drug under the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act as reported by the Detroit Free Press. Sheriff Mike Bouchard likened the dispensaries and their suppliers to "organized crime" as reported by Jonathan Oosting for MLive. Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, CA, officials announced that an overwhelming majority of the pot shops in the city do not meet the legal requirements to dispense the herbal cure-all, and are moving to shut them down as reported...

Last year at this time when I was putting together the fall and preliminary winter outlooks I was seeing an El Nino amidst a cold PDO (Pacific Decadal Oscillation) facing me. That helped to lead to a very chilly winter for much of the eastern U.S. and especially the Southeast. This year the pendulum is swinging in the opposite direction and that means a La Nina amidst a cold PDO. So can we expect opposite conditions for this fall/winter?

A low-carbon fuel standard is being pushed by some in Congress, including Michigan Sen. Debbie Stabenow, as a way to lower greenhouse gas emissions. A low-carbon fuel standard will do little to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but it is a gift to the ethanol lobby. A low carbon fuel standard sets a limit on greenhouse gas emissions from both the production and consumption of transportation fuel. Low-carbon fuel standards require a life cycle analysis of petroleum-based fuels and the creation of a standard for reducing greenhouse gas emissions per unit of energy from the production and use of those fuels....

    U. S. District Chief Judge Vaughn R. Walker has ruled California's Prop 8 banning gay marriage is unconstitutional. Walker is one of only two known gay federal judges. Ironically, his appointment by former President George H. W. Bush was opposed by some Democrats on the grounds he was anti-gay. The Constitution has been in effect for over 200 years and the Fourteenth Amendment, cited by Judge Walker, has been in effect for over 140 years. Some things, such as new technology, may not have been envisioned by our founding fathers and could need interpretation by the courts. Gay marriage isn't...
