A moment of kindness (vanity)

Right now, I'm in a lot of pain. I'm hurting. Everyone I love is hurting. Things just keep going from bad to worse. Today I received a call, a woman soliciting donations for a charity. I blew up. I told her that I'd just spent my entire morning canceling all of my monthly charitable donations. I'd given all I could give and I had nothing left. I'm bled dry. I almost hung up on her. She asked me what was wrong. I sighed and couldn't speak and she told me it was alright. I started to choke up and I...

Authentic Torah Lecture

This is an online class given by a dynamic rabbi in Israel. Probably mostly of interest to Jews, especially if you've never attended an authentic Jewish Torah (Bible) class. Enjoy

The Almighty is Unjustifiable, Part II

What do we mean by professing that G-d is good and man was created in His image? When G-d allows and even causes unbearable pain to befall man, afflicting him with sickness, cruel death, earthquakes and the most horrible wars, there seems little room for these claims. If G-d, by our moral standards, cannot be justified for many of His actions, as we have suggested previously, how are we to revere Him?

To believe in G-d is to believe not only that there is ultimate meaning to our existence but also that this meaning is completely beyond our comprehension. We do not know why G-d created the universe and man; to know that, we would have to be G-d. We would have to abandon the human condition and confront a metaphysical reality that our brains are not equipped to absorb. A reality that asks us to do the impossible — to utterly reject our thoughts, go beyond the shore of our reason and enter into the unfeasible situation in which G-d's thoughts...

Divine Sovereignty or no Sovereignty

"And six years you shall sow your land and you will gather its produce. And the seventh let it rest and lie fallow. Six days you shall do your work and on the seventh day you shall rest." (From this week's Torah portion, Mishpatim, Exodus 23: 10-12) The Land of Israel was given to us so that we could establish a 'kingdom of priests and a holy nation' that would crown the Creator over His world. That is the purpose of the Land of Israel, of Jerusalem and of the royal palace, the Temple on the Temple Mount. Those who...

Your Only Choice is Choice

Rabbi Eliezar was a very, very poor man. He subsisted on a meager diet of bread and garlic. One day, the rabbi was so hungry that he fainted. While unconscious, he had a dialogue with G-d. When revived by his students, he announced, "G-d spoke to me." "What did He say?" "I asked G-d, 'Why couldn't You create me as a rich man? Why do I have to suffer like this?' And G-d answered, 'Rabbi Eliezar, my dear son, would you prefer me to destroy the entire world, and re-create it, and maybe you'll be born with a different destiny?'...

The supernatural nature of nature

It is a strange and disorienting panorama that Rabbi E. E. Dessler, the celebrated Jewish thinker (1892-1953) asks us to ponder: a world where the dead routinely rise from their graves but no grain or vegetation has ever grown. The thought experiment continues with the sudden appearance of a man who procures a seed, something never seen before in this bizarre universe, and plants it in the ground. The inhabitants regard the act as no different from burying a stone, and are flabbergasted when, several days later, a sprout pierces the soil where the seed had been consigned, and eventually...

3. The Vulnerability of the MindThe Torah tells us that there are certain prohibitions which pertain only to the Melech Yisroel (King of Israel). The Torah states, "Only he shall not have too many horses for himself, so that he will not return the people to Egypt in order to increase horses....And he shall not have too many wives, so that his heart not turn astray; and he shall not greatly increase silver and gold for himself." The Gemara in Tractate Sanhedrin tells us that Shlomo HaMelech (King Solomon), who was the wisest man to who ever lived, raised sables...

Reform Jewish Leader Responds to New Orleans Mayor Linking God and Destruction from Hurricanes

Reform Jewish Leader Responds to New Orleans Mayor Comments Linking God and Destruction from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita In response to the comments made by New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin stating "Surely God is mad at America. He sent us hurricane after hurricane after hurricane, and it's destroyed and put stress on this country," Rabbi David Saperstein, Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, issued the following statement noting, “Mayor Nagin’s comments yesterday, suggesting that Hurricanes Katrina and Rita struck our land because, ‘God is mad at America’ are offensive, misguided, and perhaps even more to the point,...

Separation of God and State? Liberal Judges and ACLU Ought to Read History

America's founders did not intend for there to be a separation of God and state, as shown by the fact that all 50 states acknowledge God in their state constitutions: Alabama 1901, Preamble. We the people of the State of Alabama, invoking the favor and guidance of Almighty God, do ordain and establish the following Constitution ... Alaska 1956 Preamble. We, the people of Alaska, grateful to God and to those who founded our nation and pioneered this great land ... Arizona 1911, Preamble.
Big business religion (Armstrong Williams)

Big business religion Armstrong Williams February 27, 2005 Corporations and parishioners are increasingly coming together to spread the word of God and make money. All across the country churches—once intimate places of spiritual interconnectedness—have been replaced by stadiums of worship that utilize advanced technological innovations to awe, edify, and rip off those in attendance. The jig goes something like this: Corporations underwrite the construction of vast religious complexes that awe people into regular attendance. The preacher’s image is projected onto a big screen. His calm baritone is beamed out by state of the art speakers. From all sides, his voice...

Pennsylvania Angels

This was the first we knew it was nine for nine. I've always known that Pennsylvania shitkickers were the best in G-d's Country, but now I know that we grow the hardiest angels here too. G-d bless every tobacco chewin', snuff rubbin', Marlboro smokin', baseball hat wearin', pickup truck drivin', rifle totin', shot and a beer drinkin', most beloved rednecks in the world, every man, woman, and child among us, because we are the real America.
