PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (AP) — A single dad and his seven children were found dead in their one-story home, relatives said, and though officials gave no details on the cause of the deaths, the man's stepfather said he had been trying to keep the family warm with a generator after the power was cut because of an outstanding bill. Lloyd Edwards told The Associated Press that his stepson, 36-year-old Rodney Todd, had bought the generator after the power was shut off to the home in Princess Anne, about 60 miles southeast of Annapolis on Maryland's Eastern Shore. He said those...

Whether you’re a prepper or an outdoor enthusiast who likes to get away from the modern world for days at a time, you know that there are still a pesky few electronic devices that you would like to keep charged even when a power source is miles away. There are several options like solar panels and hand cranks for providing off-grid power; but often — for preppers and backpackers alike — space is a major concern when already packing a heft of gear. A new camp stove design by a company called BioLite, however, can help you keep your pack...

So electrical power has been out @ my house in smugly Nuclear-Power-Free Santa Cruz county, CA for close to 2 days now. An electrical generator is in order for the next blackout. But what brand to buy, and what features? Is it relatively easy to wire into a standard home electrical system? We'd use it for only the most important stuff: Keeping the fridge running + a modem, router and laptop to FReep by!

I'm looking for advice and lessons learned from people who are either happy or unhappy with their purchase/arrangement. Thanks.

WASHINGTON, D.C. November 13, 2009 -- A group of researchers at the City College of New York is developing a new way to generate power for planes and automobiles based on materials known as piezoelectrics, which convert the kinetic energy of motion into electricity. They will present their concept later this month at the 62nd Annual Meeting of the American Physical Society's (APS) Division of Fluid Dynamics will take place from November 22-24 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Waffle Bike is a fully weaponized waffle making device complete with call to prayer public address system. It’s also the name of a short film—documenting the bike’s maiden voyage in search of chickens, naturally, to lay the eggs for the batter. In Waffle Bike, a perfectly clipped narrator chirps out Waffle Bike’s features, which include a Honda Harmony en2500 generator, a 9-inch Norweigan waffle maker, a small refrigerator up front, a tape deck (which plays through three 8-inch, 25-watt, all-weather trumpet horn speakers made in China), and two 12-gauge homemade shotguns. Hoping to tap into this, the world's largest tidal turbine is set to start generating electricity this month. The installation of the SeaGen marine current generator was completed this past May in Strangford Lough, a large inlet on the coast of Northern Ireland. The system, designed and built by Marine Current Turbines Ltd., has two rotors that each span 16 meters (52 feet) in diameter. Generators fabricated from wires only nanometers or billionths of a meter wide can convert vibrations to electricity, experts told UPI's Nano World. These nanogenerators could help power nanoscale devices without the need for unwieldy batteries, finding use in everything from portable electronics and wireless nanosensors to medical implants, said researcher Zhong Lin Wang, a nanotechnologist at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. "There is a lot of mechanical energy available in our environment," Wang said. The generators could, for instance, harvest energy from body motions, muscle stretching and blood pressure or from sea, wind or acoustic waves or...

CAPE CANAVERAL - A balky Russian oxygen generator broke down on the International Space Station, but its two-man crew has a reserve air supply that would last about five months, NASA officials said Friday. The station's primary generator, which has been operating in an on-again, off-again fashion for months, stopped working last week and the station's crew has not been able to fix it. Mission managers say the unit has failed for good. Consequently, Russian cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev and U.S. astronaut John Phillips will be relying on reserves until replacement parts arrive at the station in late August. Kylie Clem,...
