I'm in the process of getting quotes from local companies to install a whole-house standby generator. I'm in southern FL and last year's near-miss with a hurricane is prompting me to move on it now. I had planned to do this anyway since moving here, but all my other projects took first priority... this is my only remaining big project for this home. Anyway... I know I need around 27Kw and, and Generac and Kohler both seem to have comparable products at comparable cost. Both are American made. I had one installed several years back in WA (an 8Kw Briggs...

Considering purchasing a 8-10,000 watt generator and looking for pros/cons of portable vs. installed. Example, with a portable, how would you connect a pump or a furnace to it? Thank you for your insight and feedback. Looking to leverage other people's experiences.

I need Freeper expertise. Does anyone have the generator pitched on Glenn Beck's show or the my solar backup (are they the same?). I know it can't back the entire house up but we are looking for one that can run the fridge and/or freezer. I just finished reading the survivalist series by A. American and Morgan (lead guy) had a solar generator. Thanks in advance for your help!

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (AP) — A single dad and his seven children were found dead in their one-story home, relatives said, and though officials gave no details on the cause of the deaths, the man's stepfather said he had been trying to keep the family warm with a generator after the power was cut because of an outstanding bill. Lloyd Edwards told The Associated Press that his stepson, 36-year-old Rodney Todd, had bought the generator after the power was shut off to the home in Princess Anne, about 60 miles southeast of Annapolis on Maryland's Eastern Shore. He said those...

The old 5000 watt Kohler has bit the dust. Looking to buy a new portable electric generator. There are dozens on the market and would like FReeper recommendations for one in the 5000-7500 watt range. Also considering going with a propane fired model. Any suggestions? I see a lot of Generac units at a decent price, comments about those?

Whether you’re a prepper or an outdoor enthusiast who likes to get away from the modern world for days at a time, you know that there are still a pesky few electronic devices that you would like to keep charged even when a power source is miles away. There are several options like solar panels and hand cranks for providing off-grid power; but often — for preppers and backpackers alike — space is a major concern when already packing a heft of gear. A new camp stove design by a company called BioLite, however, can help you keep your pack...

So electrical power has been out @ my house in smugly Nuclear-Power-Free Santa Cruz county, CA for close to 2 days now. An electrical generator is in order for the next blackout. But what brand to buy, and what features? Is it relatively easy to wire into a standard home electrical system? We'd use it for only the most important stuff: Keeping the fridge running + a modem, router and laptop to FReep by!
  • SOLICITING ADVICE: Want to purchase a generator to power home in emergency

After seeing many people still without power in the wake of Irene, I'd like to purchase a generator - something I can use to either attach a few outlets, or, in the event of a longer outage, use to power my entire home (within reason). I'm looking for advice and lessons learned from people who are either happy or unhappy with their purchase/arrangement. Thanks.

Toyota Motor Corp announced July 19, 2011, that it will equip the Prius with a function to provide electricity from its rechargeable battery to external equipment. The function enables to power, for example, home electric appliances in the case of power outage. Toyota plans to release it as an option for the Prius in 2012. Its price has not been determined yet. The company intends to make the function available to other hybrid electric vehicles, too. Toyota has already equipped the hybrid electric version of the Estima with a power supply function. "(After the Tohoku Earthquake,) users in the afflicted...

Freepers: The new wife has given me a new "honey do" list. Included, in this quarter's budget is to install a backup generator in our somewhat remote home. We have a 4k sq/ft home in Arkansas, and her criteria is to be able to run everything in the house if the power goes out. We are next to the last connection on a long line down a valley, down by the river and can expect a long power outage if we get tornados, storms, ice, etc. We are expecting our first child, and I think that a good standby generator...

WASHINGTON, D.C. November 13, 2009 -- A group of researchers at the City College of New York is developing a new way to generate power for planes and automobiles based on materials known as piezoelectrics, which convert the kinetic energy of motion into electricity. They will present their concept later this month at the 62nd Annual Meeting of the American Physical Society's (APS) Division of Fluid Dynamics will take place from November 22-24 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. About a half-inch by one inch in size, these devices might be mounted on the roof or tail of a car or...

Waffle Bike is a fully weaponized waffle making device complete with call to prayer public address system. It’s also the name of a short film—documenting the bike’s maiden voyage in search of chickens, naturally, to lay the eggs for the batter. In Waffle Bike, a perfectly clipped narrator chirps out Waffle Bike’s features, which include a Honda Harmony en2500 generator, a 9-inch Norweigan waffle maker, a small refrigerator up front, a tape deck (which plays through three 8-inch, 25-watt, all-weather trumpet horn speakers made in China), and two 12-gauge homemade shotguns. The film is charming and disturbing and funny—and the...

Sloshing back and forth in constant rhythm, the ocean's tides are a predictable source of renewable energy. Hoping to tap into this, the world's largest tidal turbine is set to start generating electricity this month. The installation of the SeaGen marine current generator was completed this past May in Strangford Lough, a large inlet on the coast of Northern Ireland. The system, designed and built by Marine Current Turbines Ltd., has two rotors that each span 16 meters (52 feet) in diameter. "The technology is very analogous to wind, except we are doing everything underwater," said Peter Fraenkel, the company's...

After recent trouble w/ a relativly new standby generator, while awaiting parts, the dealer informed me that Coleman Powermate is shut down, not taking calls, & probably bankrupt. According to this company, their people at another branch stopped at the Powermate headquarters, & found everything locked up. Coleman Powermate is located in Aurora, IL, & manufactures generators, pressure washers, & compressors. The links on their website are dead, too.
