  • Florida-style 'Stand Your Ground' gun laws sub impulse for intelligent thinking

Even as George Zimmerman stands trial for fatally shooting Trayvon Martin, many Americans argue these laws make us safe. I've had pistols held to my head from Bosnia to Beirut. Your best self-defense is your tongue. Those who put their faith in guns will ultimately be outgunned. Because this is my last column, I want to challenge a deeply held belief that is, tragically, a core one for millions of Americans. [See editor's note at the end of this column.] One of the most common ideas emerging after the Trayvon Martin tragedy with Florida’s Stand Your Ground law is that...

George Zimmerman, charged in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, is building an online presence as his case moves toward trial. His defense attorney, Mark O’Mara, launched a new website –gzlegalcase.com — that will seek donations for Zimmerman’s legal defense and “provide a voice” for the 28-year-old, who faces a second-degree murder charge in Martin’s death. O’Mara also created Facebook and Twitter accounts.

What evidence does Special Prosecutor Angela Corey have that prompted her to charge George Zimmerman with murdering Trayvon Martin? So far, she has refused to say. Before long, though, she will be required by law to release the evidence — which fills several boxes. What will it show? "It'll be like little bits and pieces that will have to be strung together," said Adam Pollack, an Orlando criminal-trial attorney. "Almost a bunch of little dots. Initially, the little dots don't make much sense, but if you step back, you see a bigger picture." The public could get access in the...

Trayvon Martin did not deserve to die. Everyone has heard the story of the 17-year-old black kid who was walking home from a Florida gas station, when he was shot dead by a self-appointed neighborhood watchman. Zimmerman wasn’t arrested until recently, since he was protected by Florida’s "Stand Your Ground" law, which states that it’s all right to kill someone if they confront you. George Zimmerman claims that Martin attacked him. I’m a white kid, so some may argue that the gravity of the situation is somewhat lost on me, but it’s not. I’m a firm believer in the fact...

In the weeks leading up to the arrest of George Zimmerman, many people were shocked to find him on campus at Ohio State University. Of course, he wasn’t there in physical form, but his name and the phrase “Long live George Zimmerman” was written (presumably by a student) on the Frank W. Hale Black Cultural Center at Ohio State. This was a stunning and ugly act, analogous to racial slurs on campus walls, nooses on professors’ doors, and “ghetto”-themed parties that have become common extracurricular activities on college campuses. The response of the Ohio State administration is emblematic of most...

The Rev. Jesse Jackson preached Sunday afternoon in Miami-Dade County about the importance of teaching young people the importance of voting, the continued battle against racism and the controversial shooting of Trayvon Martin. Inside the 93rd Street Community Baptist Church in West Little River, to about 200 people in the pews, the civil rights leader opened his remarks with, “Long live the spirit of Trayvon Martin.” It was a bit late in the afternoon for a Sunday service, but that didn’t stop the congregants from singing and praising the Lord. Most came dressed in their Sunday best. It wasn’t hot,...

In the midst of this controversial ‘Stand Your Ground’ law issue in the Trayvon Martin case and in the Marissa Alexander case, three key questions immediately come to mind. Question number one is how much injustice is this ‘Stand Your Ground’ law going to inflict on the public and on good, old-fashioned common sense before it is either revised or repealed? Question number two would have to be is this barefaced differentiation in the applying of the ‘Stand Your Ground’ law in regards to both of these cases a direct reflection of the ‘War on Women’, a war on minorities,...

To paraphrase President Obama, if I had a son who had been flat on the ground in a vicious fight, the back of his head would look like that of accused murderer George Zimmerman. Thanks to a photograph broadcast by ABC News showing Zimmerman’s bloody head wounds, those trying to use Trayvon Martin’s death to challenge “stand your ground” self-defense laws had better start exploiting some other tragedy. For the picture demonstrates that Zimmerman was unable to retreat, since he was pinned to the ground taking a beating when he shot Martin. And note that one of the depicted wounds...

Based on new information, Zimmerman did not willingly purchase a gun. That came as a last resort to end the problem ……..neighbor’s pit bull who was continually menacing his family’s dog. TRUTH, JUSTICE AND JOURNALISM It seems almost redundant to link to the Reuters piece on George Zimmerman that nearly everyone has seen by now, but what's interest about it is just how routine it is. It's a standard background piece and thousands like it run after prominent crimes. Any sizable news organization can put one out within a week and smaller community papers and magazines regularly run them when there's a major case. When the case is big enough, some of them get turned into movies, mostly they help set a tone. All they really involve in meeting with some...

As we remember the last riot in Los Angeles, the seeds of the next one are being sown. Al Sharpton was in Los Angeles on Thursday, attending a church rally marking the two-month anniversary of Trayvon MartinÂ’s death. Many people desperately want to believe America is post-racial. Surely a black family living in the White House is proof that we've overcome our embarrassing racial history and become a beacon of tolerance and respect where character, not skin color, informs the judgments we make. How badly has the media mis-reported the Trayvon Martin shooting? Just look at how rapidly the story is mutating, now that George Zimmerman is up on charges – thanks to a ridiculously over-reaching affadavit, for which some observers, including legendary liberal lawyer Alan Dershowitz, think the prosecutor should be up on charges. Do you remember the story you heard on Day One, when this first became big national news? A racist white man gunned down an innocent little black boy for no reason, just because he was Walking While Black through a swanky gated condo community. The cracker cops of...

Al Sharpton isn't going to be happy when he hears this. Apparently, George Zimmerman, who killed an unarmed Trayvon Martin in February, has black ancestors. The 28-year-old former neighborhood watchman is depicted in the media as an "angry white man" with hatred toward other ethnic groups. That narrative fits perfectly with liberals' view of America as a racist nation in which black children live in constant fear of white vigilantes, but this story is taking some interesting twists. The neighborhood watchman shot an unarmed Martin inside a gated condo complex in Sanford, FL. It turns out he is of mixed...

Days after George Zimmerman was freed on bail to await a second-degree murder trial for shooting Trayvon Martin, Sybrina Fulton, Martin's mother, says she's "willing to wait for justice to be served" in her son's case. Speaking with Tell Me More host Michel Martin, Fulton also says that she feels like "I have a little hole in my heart. And that little hole is caused by the tragedy of Trayvon's death." The Trayvon Martin case has sparked a national debate on topics ranging from race and teen fashion to gun control and self-defense laws, after the unarmed teenager was killed...

“Facts are stubborn things.”I love that quotation. John Adams said it back in 1774 when he took on the unpopular job of defending the British troops charged with the killings in the event now known as the Boston Massacre. Arguing off those same stubborn facts, Adams was able to get those troops acquitted.“Facts are stubborn things.” You can lie about them and you can try to bury them, but they have a bad habit of revealing themselves. Sometimes, these revelations can take decades or even centuries, but sometimes — especially in a modern media age — those stubborn facts demand...

After walking free for two months before he was charged, George Zimmerman was released on bond for murder charges. That release has many people questioning the judicial system. Zimmerman was released on $150,000 on April 23. He is required to wear a GPS monitoring device and to check in with courts if he goes to another state. That result is insufficient to many who think the process has been a joke. “This whole Trayvon case has been so confusing from the start. I don’t understand how someone who admittedly killed someone gets to stay out of jail for weeks before...

Accused murderer of Trayvon Martin George Zimmerman almost certainly will eventually face a jury. And what if that jury is all white? A recent Duke University study showed that all white juries in Florida were more likely to convict a black defendant than mixed ethnic juries. Though Zimmerman isn’t black, the defense almost certainly will pull out all stops to make the case that Zimmerman was the real victim and that Martin was the aggressor. In essence this means that jurors will be asked to do a defendant and victim role reversal and put Martin on trial. The massive barrage...

On March 19 NBC6 ran a story on the phone call George Zimmerman made in connection with the Trayvon Martin case. In that story an error in editorial judgment was made in which a question from the operator was deleted which could have created the impression that Mr. Zimmerman’s statement may have been singling out Trayvon Martin because of his race. We take this incident very seriously and apologize to our viewers. After conducting an extensive investigation, we are putting a more stringent editorial process in place to ensure this doesn’t happen again.

This column has not commented on the Zimmerman/Martin case for good reason. Since the facts surrounding this incident still remain unclear, it serves no purpose to speculate about what transpired in the tragic event. That is what the court system is for and it should be allowed to operate without outside interference. Unfortunately, other media outlets and certain individuals seeking personal fame have taken to the airways, print, and streets staking out extreme positions while having no knowledge about the actual event. This has resulted in some very strong feelings on both sides of the issue that should and must...

Call them what you will: “Stand Your Ground” or “Castle Doctrine” laws. Mayor Bloomberg and members of Congress, speaking on the House floor, go so far as to label them “shoot first” laws. This is a gross exaggeration — a slander, in fact, against legislation designed to reform a flaw in our treatment of self-defense. Earlier statutes affirmatively required potential victims to retreat as much as possible before using deadly force to protect themselves, sometimes putting their lives in jeopardy. The supposedly infamous laws passed in Florida and elsewhere, in contrast, use a “reasonable person” standard for determining when it...

A Florida television station's claim that the Tampa Bay New Black Panther Chief, Michelle Williams, apologized for calling for a race war rings hollow. This month, Michelle Williams, Tampa leader of the New Black Panthers, called for a race riot on Bubba the Love Sponge's nationally syndicated radio show just before George Zimmerman’s arrest - days later she followed up with a tearful but remorseless television interview at Tampa Bay 10 News. Some of the racially derogatory comments made by the New Black Panthers chief that raised brows during Bubba’s Tampa Bay-based radio show included the following racial rant: “Let...
