  • Judge delays ruling on Zimmerman bail

SANFORD, Fla., June 29 (UPI) -- After a 3-hour hearing Friday, a Florida judge postponed a decision on renewing bail for George Zimmerman, accused of killing an unarmed black teenager. Zimmerman's attorneys argued for release on $150,000 bail, the Orlando Sentinel reported. That was the figure set before Judge Kenneth Lester revoked it after prosecutors argued Zimmerman and his wife had lied about money raised through an online appeal. During the hearing, the defense acknowledged Zimmerman's wife lied about the money but argued Zimmerman, 28, is a good candidate for release. They also presented testimony to show Zimmerman, who is...

A federal judge denied the U.S. Department of Justice’s request for an emergency restraining order to halt Florida’s non-citizen voter purge and said the controversial scrub does not violate federal law. U.S. District Court Judge Robert Hinkle heard arguments this morning from the Justice Department and Michael Carvin, a Washington lawyer representing Gov. Rick Scott’s administration. Carvin was one of the lead lawyers for President George W. Bush in the protracted 2000 recount legal wrangle. Hinkle denied the request for the emergency stop to the program in part because he said the state was no longer doing it. But he...

When the salesman complained to management, Zimmerman denied the harassment. "The guy was so convincing when he was confronted by management to the point where I doubted my own self. A day after killing Trayvon Martin, George Zimmerman reportedly passed a police lie detector test when asked if he confronted the teen and if he feared for his life “when you shot the guy,” according to documents released today by Florida prosecutors. Zimmerman “was classified as No Deception Indicated (NDI)” according to the report. Problem is, even if George Zimmerman is telling the truth, he was still the aggressor of this altercation. According to a “confidential report” prepared by the Sanford Police Department, Zimmerman willingly submitted to a computer voice stress analyzer (CVSA) “truth verification” on February 27. Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law is complicating matters for prosecutors rushing to convict George Zimmerman. The law is clear that residents can meet force with force when they feel threatened. Florida's Stand Your Ground law allows residents to use deadly force to defend themselves or their property, and when doing so, protects them from prosecution. This law may derail the prosecution of defendant George Zimmerman in the much-publicized case of a neighborhood watch volunteer who shot and killed teenager Trayvon Martin. State prosecutors see the case as open-and-shut, arguing that Martin was simply a kid buying a soda at a...

Given this (now somewhat cooling) media frenzy, will it be possible for Zimmerman's legal team to seat 12 Sanford-area jurors who have not already formed their opinion about the case? For years, gay rights organizations and major civil rights organizations viewed each other warily. African-American leaders often saw the gay rights groups as insensitive to racial concerns, and some resented the movement’s use of civil rights language to make the case for same-sex marriage. Advocates for gay rights, in turn, sometimes blamed socially conservative African-Americans for their defeat in crucial electoral battles. But since the relationship reached something of a crisis with the passage of Proposition 8, California’s ballot initiative against same-sex marriage, in 2008, leaders in both movements have made an effort to bring their groups closer together. George Zimmerman's public image took a blow when a judge revoked his bond, alleging that Zimmerman willfully misled the court concerning his financial situation. The fact that he's back in jail makes him appear guilty in the public's eye, and that's what matters. Whether or not Zimmerman misled the court is immaterial. In fact, his guilt or innocence is immaterial. His trial has transcended justice; it's now about capitalizing on opportunity. Zimmerman has maintained since day one that Trayvon Martin instigated their fatal confrontation. Zimmerman's various injuries coupled with autopsy results revealing Martin's injured knuckles tend to support his story....
  • Ron Littlepage: Angela Corey's hissy fits, threats unprofessional (Zimmerman, FL)

An unsolicited memo to State Attorney Angela Corey: You are a public official, and people have the right to express an opinion about how you are doing your job. When those opinions are negative, throwing a hissy fit and making threats do not reflect well. With Corey, there's a pattern of that. Last December when I wrote a column critical of how she handled the Cristian Fernandez case, she fired off a two-page, single-spaced letter on official state attorney letterhead hinting at lawsuits for libel. In the letter, she called me out for my "lack of knowledge and objectivity about...

The Trayvon Martin controversy has reopened some old wounds about race that never quite seem to heal, even in 21st-century America. While it’s clear that some public figures are exploiting the horrible death of Martin for their own ends, we cannot deny that the events surrounding his shooting are deeply troubling. Who hasn’t seen the protesters on TV carrying placards that read, “Justice for Trayvon”? Of course. But what about justice for George Zimmerman, the Hispanic man who shot the 17-year-old? Isn’t the idea of “justice for all” a pillar of American society? Have we come so far, even electing...

Nearly 100 residents gathered at the Sanford Civic Center on Thursday to hear a city commissioner, a pastor, a college_president, the city's police chief and a pair of attorneys talk about race relations, civil rights, racial profiling and the Trayvon Martin shooting. "This is a world that is full of very diverse people," said Falecia Williams, president of Valencia College's West Campus. "And it is a process of learning how to live with one another." Williams moderated the forum, called "A Night of Healing." Speakers included Sanford commissioner Mark McCarty, immigration attorney Shahzad Ahmed, attorney Earnest DeLoach Jr., and Pastor...

What is significant is that Corey reaches out with allegations of libel and the implied if not explicit threat of legal action towards critics. Corey thereby interjects her personal interests in her reputation into her public role as prosecutor with all the power of the state behind her. Littlepage, in a column today, suggests that Corey has tried to intimidate other critics as well. Someone in a position of authority in Florida needs to look into this situation, and determine whether Corey’s actions in confronting critics with implied if not explicit threats of libel suits have crossed a line.

A Florida man was bombarded with menacing messages and death threats after he was mistakenly given George Zimmerman’s former cell phone number. Junior Alexander Guy, 49, signed up for his first phone with T-Mobile last month and quickly started receiving a barrage of abusive voicemail messages. “You murderer!” one anonymous caller said. “You deserve to die!” charged another. Guy, who served 19-years in state prison on a cocaine trafficking charge, was baffled by the calls until he realized his new number was the same one used by the Neighborhood Watch volunteer who shot and killed teenager Trayvon Martin in February....
  • Trayvon Martin Neighborhood Watch Shooting: 911 Tapes Send Mom Crying From Room

Police recordings made the night a self-appointed neighborhood watch captain allegedly shot and killed an unarmed 17-year-old boy outside his stepmother's home sent the boy's mother screaming from the room and prompted his father to declare, "He killed my son," according to a family representative. The series of emergency and non-emergency calls to police depict the apparent progression of events on Feb. 26 that led to the watch captain, George Zimmerman, 28, who is white, allegedly shooting Trayvon Martin, a high-school junior who is black, as the teen made his way home with a bag of Skittles and a can...
