Man jailed over gun in UGA hotel

An Albany man who came to town for a conference was arrested on a felony charge and jailed for 18 hours because he had a gun in his hotel room. Eric Dewayne Baylis, 45, said he didn't know that the hotel was owned by the University of Georgia, which put him in violation of a state law forbidding weapons within school safety zones. His employers made the lodging arrangements and he had no idea the hotel is owned by UGA. "I actually didn't know (it) was campus property," Baylis said Thursday, soon after posting a $2,000 bond to get out...

Russia, US hold rival war games in restive Caucasus: officials

TBILISI, Georgia - The United States and Russia held rival war games Tuesday on either side of the Caucasus mountains amid simmering tensions over the fate of two rebel regions in ex-Soviet Georgia. Almost 8,000 Russian servicemen on Tuesday began anti-terror exercises across Russia's North Caucasus region, which borders Georgia, a spokesman for the Russian army told AFP. In Georgia 1,650 U.S. and Georgian servicemen began rival exercises on the formerly Russian-controlled Vaziani base, the Georgian defence ministry said. The Russian exercises were planned a year ago and "are in no way related to the U.S.-Georgian activities," Russian army spokesman...

U.S. troops start training exercise in Georgia_(Republic of Georgia)

- One thousand U.S. troops began a military training exercise in Georgia on Tuesday against a backdrop of growing friction between Georgia and neighboring Russia. Officials said the exercise, called "Immediate Response 2008," had been planned for months and was not linked to a stand-off between Moscow and Tbilisi over two Russian-backed separatists regions of Georgia. The United States is an ally of Georgia and has irritated Russia by backing Tbilisi's bid to join the NATO military alliance.

King children sue brother, father's estate

Two of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s children are suing their brother, accusing him of wrongfully taking money from their parents' estates. Bernice King and Martin Luther King III allege that Dexter King took "substantial funds" out of Coretta Scott King's estate and "wrongfully appropriated" money from their father's estate. The suit, filed Thursday in Fulton County Superior Court, serves as a very public fissure in an iconic family that has always professed unity, particularly as questions have swirled around some of their financial dealings. In a written statement Friday, Dexter King called the suit "inappropriate and false." "I'm...

Russia accuses Georgia of aggression

TSKHINVALI, Georgia: Russia accused Georgia of “an open act of aggression” on Friday after the separatist South Ossetia region said Georgian forces had killed two people in a mortar and grenade attack. The Russian-backed separatist administration called up military reservists and put its security forces on alert in response to an overnight clash in which, they said, Georgian forces fired at their capital, Tskhinvali, and nearby villages. Georgia’s Abkhazia and South Ossetia broke from central rule during wars in the 1990s after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Georgia, the paper said, was making a complex set of proposals by which Georgia would extend its control further north into Abkhazia, as far as the Kodori River.
