The Gibsons have collected the over $36 million owed them. Sadly, David Gibson and “Grandpa” Allyn Gibson did not live to see this day. By stretching out the appeals Oberlin College waited them out, but the rest of the family survives. We wish the Gibson family well.

Regarding the $36 million Oberlin College has been required to pay Gibson’s Bakery: Leaving aside fees paid by the college to Washington lawyers and the cost of insurance, the $36 million might have been spent as follows: (1) By giving each of the 295 underpaid members of the full-time faculty an outright grant of $122,033. (2) By reducing this year’s tuition bill to all 2,658 students by $957. (3) Or the money could have been left in the endowment, to generate $2 million a year. Oberlin College is finally paying out the full $36.59 million in court-ordered defamation damages to a mom-and-pop bakery that it slandered as racist. The leftist school had previously fought desperately to avoid paying the judgment. A large crowd comprised of Oberlin College students, employees and community members gathered Feb. 19 inside the campus’ King Hall to protest the institution's recent announcement that 108 college workers could lose their jobs. The protest, consisting of roughly over 800 people, took place during an Oberlin College faculty meeting.

Inside Gibson’s, the atmosphere is quiet and subdued. It’s clear that this little business and its owners have endured a great deal in the past three years, beginning with student protests in front of the store in November 2016. The protesters denounced the Gibson family as racist and claimed the store had a long history of racial profiling (none of which is true). Evidence introduced at trial established that the college facilitated these protests and that at least one senior college official actively participated in them. Following the protests, the college suspended its 100-year business relationship with Gibson’s Bakery.

One of the owners of Gibson’s Bakery and a named plaintiff in the lawsuit against Oberlin College, David passed away at home early this morning surrounded by family after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

The combined compensatory and punitive damages ($25 million) and attorney’s fees and costs (over $6.5 million) awards in favor of Gibson’s Bakery and its owners left Oberlin College almost $32 million in debt. Yesterday Oberlin College posted the bond (pdf.), a copy of which is embedded at the bottom of this post. ELYRIA — Lorain County Common Pleas Judge John Miraldi has ordered Oberlin College to post a $36 million appeal bond before he stays execution of the multimillion-dollar judgment recently won against the college by Gibson’s Bakery and the Gibson family. Attorneys for the Gibsons had requested the college post a bond worth $36,367,711.56, representing the total amount of judgments against the college, plus interest, awarded by a jury and Miraldi following a six-week trial that lasted from late May into early June.

Judge granted Oberlin College’s motion to stay execution of the judgment, but required the posting of a bond in the amount of the judgment plus three years interest as security. The compensatory and punitive damages of $25 million (after reduction for tort reform caps), plus the over $6.5 million in attorney’s fees and costs, put Oberlin College almost $32 million in debt to Gibson’s Bakery and its owners.
