LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The former chairman of the Republican National Committee says that new immigration reform efforts will give his a party a chance to soften its tone on the issue. Ed Gillespie said Tuesday the GOP should present itself as anti-illegal immigration but not anti-immigrant in the debate. Gillespie said he thinks some of the party's harshest voices were the loudest the last time Congress debated immigration reform. Gillespie, who also served as counselor to former President George W. Bush, said Republicans need to do a better job of reaching out to minorities.

After losing Virginia's governorship for the first time in eight years, some Democrats are trying to console themselves that Virginia is at its core a "red" state. This ignores not only that they won back-to-back governorships but also that Democrats defeated a sitting senator in 2006, took control of the state Senate in 2007 and won an open Republican Senate seat and three House seats in 2008 while carrying Virginia's electoral college votes for the first time since 1964. Over the past few months, a steady stream of journalists from mainstream-media outlets — at least eight, led by Time Washington-bureau chief Jay Carney — have abandoned journalism for positions in the Obama administration or with congressional Democrats. Fortunately for them, the difficult transition from objective reporting to ardent advocacy of a party’s agenda was made easier by the head start they got in last year’s campaign. Though there have long been concerns about liberal bias in the media, 2008 was the year the referees took off their striped shirts and donned a team’s jersey. Some say it’s a shift...

Watchdog groups say ties between a new White House aide and his former lobbying clients, including foreign governments, cast doubt on his ability to serve the American public. The White House announced yesterday it had tapped Ed Gillespie, a high-powered GOP operative and lobbyist, to serve as counselor to the president, replacing Dan Bartlett who recently resigned. But critics say Gillespie comes with strings attached, mostly to clients of his prospering lobbying firm Quinn Gillespie, which he co-founded in 2000 with former Clinton White House aide Jack Quinn. The firm retains active accounts to represent a Dubai-owned aerospace firm as...

Former Republican national chairman Ed Gillespie has emerged as a potential replacement to Dan Bartlett as counselor to President Bush, friends say. Questioned about the prospect Saturday night at a fundraising dinner for the Virginia GOP, which he now chairs, Gillespie said he was “flattered at the notion.” “It’s not for me to rule it in or out,” he added. “You’ll have to ask the president.” Gillespie, a veteran GOP operative, now splits his time between a Washington lobbying practice and his role in Virginia as the leader of a party seeking to climb its way back after a succession...

Ed Gillespie was called "President Bush's pit bull" during the 2004 presidential campaign, when as chairman of the Republican National Committee he seemed to live on cable television trading snarls with Terry McAuliffe, his attack dog of a counterpart at the Democratic National Committee. So Mr. Gillespie, 43, might seem a strange choice to manage the expected fight in the Senate over who will replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, since the job will include delivering moderate Democratic votes for whomever Mr. Bush selects as a Supreme Court nominee. But Republicans said that White House officials turned to Mr. Gillespie as...

WASHINGTON — Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee is gearing up to end judicial filibusters, joining forces with professional Republican image-makers and prominent Christian organizations comparing Democrats to racial segregationists of the 1960s. Karl Rove - The Architect," a documentary on PBS tonight, spins a story of astounding stupidity out of a career it insists is among the most influential in American politics. This is unpardonable. To hint at so much intrigue without dramatizing any of it - by hardly offering evidence - is a dereliction of duty; it suggests that even the most tendentious account of Mr. Rove, President Bush's top political adviser, as a redeemer or a rascal might have done his story greater justice. In harmony with dark synthesizer chords, the narrator speaks in haunted tones about Mr. Rove's "40-year...

...In Republican circles, election-time complaints about the mainstream media are a time-honored tradition. Back in 1992, as Mr. Bush's father was going down to defeat, Republican leaders charged the press with pro-Clinton bias. Four years later, Republican nominee Bob Dole accused reporters of not devoting enough attention to President Clinton's ethics troubles. "Where's the outrage?" he asked. "Where's the media?" The Kerry campaign has raised other complaints. Kerry aides loudly protested after Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc. ordered its television affiliates to run a program that, among other things, questioned whether Mr. Kerry's antiwar activities during the Vietnam War conflict harmed...

In the past year: Disposable personal income is higher now than in 2000, when President Bush took office; More Americans own a home today than at any point in our history; Household wealth is at its highest level in American history; American investments are now...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Christine Iverson202-863-8614 Washington, DC-"Unfortunately for angry Democrats like Tim Johnson, Nancy Pelosi and Ted Kennedy, terrorists aren't responsible for the deaths of U.S. soldiers, their commander-in-chief is. Thanks to the President's strong and principled leadership, the Taliban is on the run and women in Afghanistan are now able to attend school, hold jobs and participate as full citizens of their country. "We can only assume that Tom Daschle and Stephanie Herseth's silence on this issue means they agree with Senator Johnson. If they do not they should repudiate these comments immediately. This kind of political hate...

We had...

To: RNC Members, House & Senate Leadership, Republican MOC From: Ed Gillespie Subject: The Cherry Tree This week Vice President Cheney examined John Kerry’s Senate record of opposition to weapon systems critical in the War on Terror. Democrats defend Sen. Kerry by suggesting Republicans are “cherry picking” votes from the Senator's long career to portray him as weak on national security. Senator Kerry says using specific votes from his long career somehow distorts his approach to national defense and intelligence. While Senator Kerry's rationale has evolved over his four terms, his record is clear. Senator Kerry recently voted against $87...
