The Newt Gingrich campaign found itself in a state of confusion Friday night when reports surfaced that Gingrich would cancel all of his stops in North Carolina next week, fueling suggestions that Gingrich would be suspending his campaign. But the campaign says nothing is happening. Two people close to the Gingrich campaign told ABC News they were contacted and told all of Gingrich’s North Carolina stops had been canceled, although R.C. Hammond, communications director for the campaign, said there was a “communication glitch.” “There was confusion, but we will maintain our North Carolina schedule next week,” Hammond said. BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Newt Gingrich, GOP candidate for president, just finished up a Buffalo rally organized by developer and former gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino, a fellow Republican. He asked for supporters' votes in next week's presidential primary. "We need your vote on Tuesday. I am the underdog," he said. Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania suspended his campaign last week, but he is still on the ballot. Tuesday was the last day for candidates to submit documentation to the state Board of Elections to invalidate his candidacy, a spokesman for the agency said. Because of that, the votes for...

The Associated Press NEW YORK —Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich told Republicans at a New York state party dinner that he would work for Mitt Romney’s victory in the general election if Romney wins the nomination. “We are dedicated to a unified Republican Party,” he said. The exit of Rick Santorum from the Republican presidential primary essentially clears the path Mitt Romney is traveling to become the party's nominee against U.S. President Obama in November but Romney still has to win the hearts of GOP voters as well as the party's nomination. REMEMBER: JUST WEEKS AGO - TALK OF A STRATEGIC ALLIANCE BETWEEN RICK & NEWT WAS CIRCULATING. Nobody knows the details of that alliance. It's interesting that Rick didn't endorse... Conservatives may be in a BETTER position now than ever since there will not be a diluting of the conservative vote. Carl Cameron of FOX practically declared this over. This is about DENYING ROMNEY THE 1144. We are entering the 4th quarter. We have WINNER TAKE ALL COMING UP. It is time to show these RINO establishment what we are made of. (RALEIGH) -- Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich is spending a lot of time in North Carolina this week. The former House Speaker told supporters in Raleigh on Monday that he is staying in the race to influence the party's platform. Even though Gingrich is in third place and his poll numbers are shrinking, he said he is staying in the race to influence the party's platform. At the same time, he explained why he thinks frontrunner Mitt Romney will win the nomination and the White House. "What I said was compared to Barack Obama he is conservative enough. But the...

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT RUSH: Rick Santorum has just suspended his campaign. I think the reason for suspending the campaign is it allows you to continue to raise money to pay off your debt, but Santorum's campaign has been suspended. God bless him. I don't know why. I don't know if he had internal polling numbers that looked bad in Pennsylvania. I don't know if it's money. I don't know if it's the accumulation of pressure on him from the establishment. It's probably a combination, some people say unprecedented, in a Republican primary. Negative campaign ads have clearly worked. They drove Newt...

RALEIGH, N.C. — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s campaign Monday began morphing into less of a pursuit of the presidency and more into an effort to shape the Republican platform and to influence the discussion in the fall elections. Campaigning in Raleigh, Gingrich said he planned to battle front-runner Mitt Romney in North Carolina’s May 8 primary and all the way to the GOP convention in Tampa, Fla., but conceded the prospects of overtaking the former Massachusetts governor were not bright. But he said Republicans still face serious choices at the convention and into the fall — whether the GOP...

Foster Friess, the retired investor who spent nearly $1.7 million boosting Rick Santorum’s presidential run, is ready to help Mitt Romney. “I’m obviously going to be of help in whatever way I can,” Friess told POLITICO Tuesday afternoon, hours after Santorum suspended his campaign for the GOP presidential nomination, cementing Romney’s status as the party’s presumptive nominee. Friess, who was in Washington to accept an award from the Horatio Alger Association, said he had yet to discuss his planned shift in allegiance with Romney’s campaign campaign or the Washington-based super PAC supporting it.

That didn’t take long: Newt Gingrich has “humbly” asked Rick Santorum supporters to channel their support (read: money) to his campaign. The Gingrich camp, deeply in debt after dismal performances in recent primary races, released a statement minutes after Mr. Santorum’s exit from the Republican primary this afternoon, saying, “Rick has waged a remarkable campaign. His success is a testament to his tenacity and the power of conservative principles.” “I humbly ask Senator Santorum’s supporters to visit Newt.org to review my conservative record and join us as we bring these values to Tampa,” Mr. Gingrich’s statement continued. The former House...

...At 2:22 p.m. the candidate stepped up to the microphone at the platform in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and announced that he was suspending his 2012 presidential campaign. To his right stood his loving and dedicated wife Karen - and her expression said it all. She is an extraordinary woman, a lawyer, NICU Nurse, author, mother and Rick's best friend. However, she is also a woman who shows her heart. Surrounding them both were several of their beautiful children. Rick Santorum recounted the story of Good Friday in the Santorum home. He called it a "Passion Play of sorts". Their little three...
