I want to buy a Glock. Currently my semiautos are Sig 200St and two 1911s (both Colt). I don't have a 9mm yet have owned several: two Browning HPs and Sig 226. I've never owned Glock and am leaning toward a model 17. The concerns with Glock seem to be centered on the fact that there is no external safety for a semi-auto that remains cocked and locked. A Portland Police officer who was injured while firing a handgun has filed a multi-million-dollar lawsuit against the manufacturers of the gun and the ammunition. Officer Florin B. The Los Angeles Police Department has instructed its officers to stop using Glock 21 pistols because of concerns that the weapons could misfire. OK OK I'm sure this has been discussed ad nauseam on other gun forums but I figured I'd ask my fellow FReepers what they thought about this. From what I've read you're not supposed to use lead because of the barrel groove being octagonal and the lead builds up fast and can cause the pressure to build up and the gun goes KaBoom! Not good. See a friend of mine who's been reloading for about 30+ years says it a bunch of hooey and I should be able to use lead rounds. But he does NOT own any Glocks. So....

I'm hoping for some good advice from fellow Freepers about which handgun to purchase. I'm a novice shooter (with handguns at least). Don't really know very much about them. I've applied for a conceal carry permit in Indiana, and I'm signed up for the next NRA basic education classes at the local range. This will be my first (and possibly only) small sidearm purchase. I don't want or need anything too heavy-duty. Just a reliable, effective, easy to use, accurate pistol for personal and home defense.
