WINTER HAVEN | The Police Department is ditching $38,000 worth of guns after two .45-caliber GAP Glock Model 37 pistols exploded in separate training incidents a year a part, causing minor injuries to an officer and a cadet. "I've been around 34 years in law enforcement, and we've seen malfunctioning with guns, but never seen it explode," Police Chief Mark LeVine said. "When I've got two guns out of 90 mess up, something's wrong." The department has not had any problems with the guns during use in the line of duty. MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Police Department found that there is a serious problem with its guns. Officer Vidal Colon was injured over the weekend in a shootout, in which his gun jammed. The police chief has known about the problem for a year, but he is now taking immediate action following Saturday’s shooting. The chief sent a memo to the entire police department about the weapon problem. On Saturday, Colon responded to a report of a man armed with a gun near 36th and Scott streets. Colon fired his gun 13 times, and the suspect, Louis Domenech, shot back six...

I'm finally buying a handgun this week, after a long time wanting one, my wife finally relented. I know I want a 9mm. (No, I don't want anything bigger than that.) It's mostly for target shooting, and to have around the house, not for concealed carry. The two I'm interested in are the Glock and the Springfield Armory XD-M. I'm torn between the two. Those that know handguns far better than I do...which would you choose, and why?

This last Sunday my wife and I went to a local gun show. It was the first one we had attended, and we quite enjoyed ourselves. What made it more fun was that we went with some friends who are knowledgable about guns. Now when I say that they are "knowledgable" about guns, that's like saying that Rush Limbaugh knows a little something about radio. Or at least that's how I perceive them, because they have lots of guns including several class 3 weapons, of which one is a .50 caliber machine gun. So, yeah, they know a little something...

Philadelphia police officers will be permitted to carry larger-caliber handguns next year, part of a wide-ranging effort that Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey is making to upgrade the department's weaponry to match adversaries carrying bigger guns. Ramsey announced yesterday that officers will have the option to replace their 9mm pistols with more powerful .40- and .45-caliber semiautomatic handguns. The sidearms are produced by Austrian gunmaker Glock. Though two of four Philadelphia officers killed in the line of duty this year were shot by fugitives carrying powerful guns - one fired an assault rifle - Ramsey was careful not to characterize...

When NYPD began experiencing a specific type of malfunction, apparently endemic to the Glock Model 19 service weapon, sometime in 1996, the FTS coined the term "Phase Three" to identify this particular non-reducible stoppage, described as basically a jam where a fired casing is partially extracted, the case rim...

Terrorism as an Excuse Another CBS campaign. By John R. Lott Jr. Who could oppose laws preventing terrorists from getting guns? Obviously no one. But it would be nice if laws accomplished something more than simply making it more difficult for Americans to own guns. Ironically the day before CBS finally released its report on the 60 Minutes Memogate scandal, 60 Minutes was again stirring up fears about how terrorists would use 50-caliber rifles to attack Americans. Last year it was the semi-automatic assault-weapons ban before it expired. Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D., N.Y.) claimed the ban was "the most...

Ex-Houston policeman charged in the on-duty shooting of teen For the first time in more than 10 years, a former Houston police officer involved in an on-duty shooting goes on trial on a murder charge today, accused of intentionally killing a teenager during a scuffle at a Houston apartment complex 14 months ago. In a case that sparked public outrage and raised concerns about the Police Department's use-of-force policies, Arthur J. Carbonneau, 25, is accused of intentionally shooting Eli Eloy Escobar II in the head at close range. Carbonneau said the shooting was an accident. Questions about whether his gun,...

Talk host Tom Sullivan (KBFK, Sacramento) just announced that the SCOTUS refused to review a ruling from the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals allowing a personal damage lawsuit against gun manufacturer Glock to proceed. Sounds like a felon purchased the handgun from a gun collector and proceeded to murder; wrongful death and emotional distress, etc, claims.
  • What exactly is the purpose of the Glock trigger safety (sincere vanity)?

Please don't flame me for this question. I have shot Glocks on several occasions, and have seen and used the trigger safety. I'm still unclear, however, what this safety is supposed to do. Assuming that its purpose is to prevent accidental discharges, how does this safety do so? If (for example) a branch catches the trigger, wouldn't the Glock discharge regardless of the trigger safety? Thanks.

Portland Police Chief Derrick Foxworth has ordered a recall of .45-caliber Glock Model 21 firearms, weapons carried by 230 Portland officers. His order comes after two of the guns exploded in the hands of two separate officers during training this month. Neither of the officers was seriously injured. "We don't want a reoccurrence of this happening again," Foxworth said. "It's the prudent thing to do." The Portland Police Bureau at first thought the problem was caused by an ammunition malfunction. After the second explosion, the bureau's training division did further analysis and determined the explosions may have been caused by...

THE first fully automatic handgun to surface in the UK - capable of firing 1,100 rounds a minute - has been seized in a police raid. It is a Glock 18, banned from sale in the US and described as a "monster of a weapon" that fires bullets with the intensity of a high- pressure water hose. The ultra-light, Austrian-made gun was discovered in a swoop on the home of a suspected Yardie gangster. Scotland Yard has issued a nationwide alert as they try to find the owner and establish how the weapon got into Britain. A Met firearms expert...

When police Officer Randall Smith was accidentally shot in the head by a fellow officer with a Glock semiautomatic pistol in 1995, he sued the gun maker, claiming the weapon was defectively designed and unnecessarily dangerous.

Glock settled the lawsuit. But for the rest of his life, Smith, whose injuries left him permanently brain damaged and cost him his police job in Birmingham, Ala., is barred from talking about the case or revealing any details he learned about Glock before the settlement. His lawyer also is barred from talking, restricted by a confidentiality agreement that is a standard policy for Glock when settling lawsuits.

Since the introduction of the Glock model 21 chambered for the legendary .45 ACP cartridge, it has been a steady seller, with those who shoot them developing an almost cult-like devotion to the big pistol. The only complaint that I have ever heard leveled against the model 21 is regarding the size of the pistol’s grip. It was designed to hold thirteen of the fat .45 ACP cartridges in a double column magazine, and the grip is necessarily large. This is fine if you have large hands, but is a bit awkward for shooters with small to medium hand sized...
