A DOG that leapt between a three-year-old boy and a highly venomous brown snake has been honoured by the RSPCA. Diesel, a cattle dog-dingo cross, was today hailed as a hero and received a big bone for saving a Sunshine Coast couple's grandson from being bitten by the snake. Drew Gralike was playing on a swing last month at his grandfather's Eumundi property when the snake appeared. Diesel leapt between the boy and the snake, receiving a near-fatal bite. Drew's grandfather, Stan Gralike, told ABC Radio that the snake was about to strike when Diesel intervened.

But anyone in attendance would say that Drummer, the guest of honor, is far more than just a dog. Trained as a service dog by Pennsylvania-based non-profit organization Canine Partners for Life (CPL), Drummer was brought to Texas in 2000 to aid in the...

BISBEE — A few months back, he was just a cast-off dog, unwanted, unloved and headed for the “sleep-forever table” at a California animal shelter. Today, Phillip is a hero in the eyes of his owner Linda Reynolds after protecting her and his companion, Jake, a Labradachshund, from a very large female Western Diamondback rattlesnake that had somehow found her way onto Reynold’s enclosed sun porch at her 33-acre ranch in Elfrida on Sept. 29. “I was going to let them go out in the back yard and opened the door to the sun porch. That’s when I heard it....

Roy Klopp survived a shocking twist in his daily bike ride Monday after being bit in the behind by a black bear near Clinton. "It wasn't my day to die," said Klopp, who returned to his job at the sawmill last night after taking a day to recuperate from the attack. Around 11 a.m. Monday morning, Klopp, 56, and his border collies, Tippy and Chuckie, met an unusually aggressive black bear in the bushes near a curve in the walking trails above Clinton, a town of about 740 residents 380 kilometres northeast of Vancouver. Protected only by a pair of...
