ALKMAAR, Netherlands, - A Netherlands public broadcaster shared a clip of its video drone being smacked out of the sky by an aggressive goose. RTV Noord-Holland, which shared the clip on YouTube, said the Egyptian goose apparently saw the drone as a rival when it was flying over the Oudorperpolder area of Alkmaar. The bird came in low to knock the device out of the sky. The drone did not appear to be seriously damaged and was able to make a relatively smooth landing.

Obama needed a filet mignon in the June employment report. But instead he got a rubber chicken. Only 80,000 new jobs were created last month, way below Wall Street expectations. It’s the fourth consecutive monthly disappointment. For a few months last winter, jobs were rising at an average of 225,000 a month. But that has sloped way down to only 75,000. The unemployment rate continues at 8.2 percent, which is the forty-first straight month above 8 percent. The U6 unemployment rate, which includes discouraged workers, is just under 15 percent. As voters finalize their election impressions this summer, all of...

Old Lyme — The goose with the arrow through its head that was spotted earlier this year is continuing to evade capture by town animal control officials. The bird stood out Friday in a flock of fellow geese near High Hopes, a horse farm on Town Woods Road. Old Lyme assistant animal control officer Lizabeth Gode said the goose is able to fly, which has thwarted attempts to capture it. She said officials have tried using nets and food to lure the goose, to no avail.

"The U.S. economy added no [net] new jobs in August--the worst showing in a year--as employers cut back hiring and trimmed work hours of existing employees," the Los Angeles Times reports. "The nation's unemployment rate in August stayed at 9.1%, as more people reported that they found part-time work, many of them because that's all that was available." Next week President Obama will speak to a joint session of Congress. As we noted yesterday, the president reportedly will ask Congress to pass a new "stimulus," though he won't call it that, because the last stimulus didn't--oh, wait. "One More Time:...

  • Geese hatch in Buffalo cemetery where deer stood watch

A mother goose who apparently made friends with a male deer as she sat on her nest inside a Buffalo cemetery is now tending a brood of goslings. Forest Lawn Cemetery officials say the Canada geese have hatched and left the concrete urn where their mother had made her nest. The family waddled off to find a pond. The nesting goose attracted loads of attention over the past couple of weeks after a deer inside the cemetery seemed to take on the role of the nest's protector after the male goose disappeared. The deer was seen day after day via...

It's a very brief news report about a Deer that is defending the nest of a goose. The male goose has died and now the mother must fend off the danger to her eggs alone. She made her nest in an urn and and until a deer showed up to give some help the mother goose had no chance of her eggs ever hatching. Now when she goes off to forage for food...

Locals in Buffalo said the goose, a species known to mate for life, lost her male partner and would have been left defenseless while protecting her eggs in an empty cemetery urn if a deer had not stepped in to guard the expectant mother, WGRZ-TV, Buffalo, reported Tuesday. Passersby said the deer places itself between the goose and approaching humans or animals. The deer was once...

Goose Has No Mate, Deer May Be Protecting Nest BUFFALO, N.Y. -- An unusual springtime friendship between a deer and a nesting goose appears to have blossomed inside a cemetery in Buffalo, N.Y. For the past week or so, the deer has been standing near an urn where the goose has taken up residence, positioning itself between the urn and any passing car or foot traffic. BRADFORD – Readers at UnionLeader.com expressed outrage yesterday that the federal government had rounded up and euthanized 21 Canada geese on Lake Todd on June 23, in a response to at least two property owners' concerns. For seven years, the geese -- considered the largest, most common water birds -- have been fouling lawns and beaches along the 50-acre pond, which straddles the Bradford and Newbury town line. Federal officials said two property owners paid for the round up, gassing and killing of the now-flightless geese and their goslings. Their bodies were frozen and will be chopped up and fed...

In the movie Top Gun, the F-14 is (presumably) in a flat spin and Goose ejects into the canopy. I need some professional opinions on the possibility of that happening. My experience with the F-16 is that the canopy ballistics make the canopy long gone prior to seat firing at any point in the envelope. Normally the aerodynamics would strip the canopy away in forward flight in any ejection. But, in a flat spin, did the F-14 aerodynamics create an environment where the canopy could remain over the plane/crew resulting in a crew strike?

Hunting was allowed again in 1975 when the population increased.

Customers of a south side print shop beware of the hissing goose. For the second year in a row, a Canada goose has made the front door area of Artcraft Inc., her home. Mother Goose, as she's called, greets customers by hissing at them. Last year, she hatched a gosling just a few feet from the front door. She has already made a nest this year. "I had one customer call from a cell phone and ask if she would bite," said Judi Williams, the company's office manager. "She hisses, but she doesn't bite. Otherwise, everybody thinks she's pretty cool."...

The Washington Times www.washingtontimes.com Natural Resources Police won't suffer interferenceBy Gene MuellerTHE WASHINGTON TIMESPublished January 12, 2005 The Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) sent a warning to animal rights activists who intend to interfere with lawful hunting. On New Year's Day NRP officers arrested and charged a Mechanicsville man for interfering with hunters, among other criminal charges.     After receiving complaints of hunter harassment, NRP officers set up surveillance in the area of Morgan Brothers Road near Cremona in St. Mary's County. There, they witnessed Allan Eugene Pulliam, 37, confronting goose hunters near his property, the officers said. The goose...
  • It is Factually True: Kerry DID Break Federal Law on Goose Hunt

If you remember the story, Kerry did not want to be seen carrying the dead goose he shot in the photo op. So while exiting the field he had a birdboy run on up ahead out of the camera shot carrying the goose. When asked, he said each hunter shot one, but in all pictures, he is the only one not shown carrying a dead goose. Duckhunters on the website the Duckhunter's Refuge pointed out this was a violation of federal law, it involved not "maintaining field possession" of the game. When this question arose, I emailed the head waterfowl...

Birds of a FeatherOctober 28, 2004Well, “Old Blood and Feathers” is at it again.  In a move designed to get the Bush campaign’s goose, John Kerry has given final proof that he is the most despicable weenie in Presidential campaign history.  Please note that I did not call him “human”...that moniker is reserved for non-weenies. In a much publicized photo-op, Kerry disappeared into the swampy brush of Ohio and remerged two hours later screaming the “body count”... "Everybody got one, everybody got one," said Mr. Kerry, his hand stained with goose blood, though he was the only member of the...

It is time for a more sober look at the great goose hunt with the perspective of history, at least a few days. 1. This was the wrong goose hunt in the wrong woods and the wrong time. 2. How would you like to be the last goose to die for Kerry's macho photo op? 3. Kerry did not go goose hunting as a last resort and he did not allow the game wardens to do their job. This was a goose hunt of choice and not of necessity and Kerry launched it as was a unilateral hunt with no...

John Kerry spoke of his love for guns and hunting last night as he fought jibes of being a liberal. "I've hunted. I own guns. I go out and hunt. That's who I am," the Democrats' presidential candidate said in a TV interview shown today. His comments followed a campaign by the powerful pro-shooting lobby to highlight his voting record in favour of gun control. Last week Mr Kerry staged a photo-opportunity in camouflage hunting gear and shot a duck for the cameras. He said he was a lifelong hunter and accused Republicans of a smear campaign. "They can't stand...
