At about 9 a.m. on Sunday, CHP officers were tasked with an unusual call: A flock of baby geese had wandered onto westbound Interstate 80 near the Ashby Avenue exit. In a Facebook post on the incident, CHP showed endearing footage of officers escorting the geese via vehicle along the freeway. When officers arrived on scene to find the geese, the animals were found in the left lanes of the freeway, said Officer Sean Wilkenfeld with CHP Oakland. "We ran a traffic break and we stopped the freeway so we can get them corralled to the right hand shoulder —...

Many people have Thansgiving traditions. One of our neighbors has the Thanksgiving tradition of getting drunk and running over our mailbox. Last summer, I cemented in our mailbox and used heavy pipe. Cut his car in half this Thanksgiving like Grandpa using the electric knife on the turkey. When the cops pulled him out of the left half of the car, he was yelling at them that he'd never win the race with a pit crew as slow as them. One of our family traditions is that I do the Thanksgiving grocery shopping. I feel it's part of the manly...

ALKMAAR, Netherlands, - A Netherlands public broadcaster shared a clip of its video drone being smacked out of the sky by an aggressive goose. RTV Noord-Holland, which shared the clip on YouTube, said the Egyptian goose apparently saw the drone as a rival when it was flying over the Oudorperpolder area of Alkmaar. The bird came in low to knock the device out of the sky. The drone did not appear to be seriously damaged and was able to make a relatively smooth landing.

Obama needed a filet mignon in the June employment report. But instead he got a rubber chicken. Only 80,000 new jobs were created last month, way below Wall Street expectations. It’s the fourth consecutive monthly disappointment. For a few months last winter, jobs were rising at an average of 225,000 a month. But that has sloped way down to only 75,000. The unemployment rate continues at 8.2 percent, which is the forty-first straight month above 8 percent. The U6 unemployment rate, which includes discouraged workers, is just under 15 percent. As voters finalize their election impressions this summer, all of...

Old Lyme — The goose with the arrow through its head that was spotted earlier this year is continuing to evade capture by town animal control officials. The bird stood out Friday in a flock of fellow geese near High Hopes, a horse farm on Town Woods Road. Old Lyme assistant animal control officer Lizabeth Gode said the goose is able to fly, which has thwarted attempts to capture it. She said officials have tried using nets and food to lure the goose, to no avail.

"The U.S. economy added no [net] new jobs in August--the worst showing in a year--as employers cut back hiring and trimmed work hours of existing employees," the Los Angeles Times reports. "The nation's unemployment rate in August stayed at 9.1%, as more people reported that they found part-time work, many of them because that's all that was available." Next week President Obama will speak to a joint session of Congress. As we noted yesterday, the president reportedly will ask Congress to pass a new "stimulus," though he won't call it that, because the last stimulus didn't--oh, wait. "One More Time:...

More youth hunters will have the opportunity to participate in the 2011 youth goose hunt in southernmost Illinois, which is shaping up to top 2010 for hunting opportunities and a fun-filled banquet, according to one of the organizers who helped to make last year's event one of the biggest and best hunts in the history of the hunt. Designated as a goose hunt, ducks may also be harvested, according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. A mother goose who apparently made friends with a male deer as she sat on her nest inside a Buffalo cemetery is now tending a brood of goslings. Forest Lawn Cemetery officials say the Canada geese have hatched and left the concrete urn where their mother had made her nest. The family waddled off to find a pond. The nesting goose attracted loads of attention over the past couple of weeks after a deer inside the cemetery seemed to take on the role of the nest's protector after the male goose disappeared. The deer was seen day after day via...

Start your day off with a smile on your heart by checking out what a security camera caught at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo NY. It's a very brief news report about a Deer that is defending the nest of a goose. The male goose has died and now the mother must fend off the danger to her eggs alone. She made her nest in an urn and and until a deer showed up to give some help the mother goose had no chance of her eggs ever hatching. Now when she goes off to forage for food...

BUFFALO, N.Y., April 12 (UPI) -- Witnesses said an adult deer has taken over the role of protecting a mother goose preparing to hatch her eggs in New York state as a single parent. Locals in Buffalo said the goose, a species known to mate for life, lost her male partner and would have been left defenseless while protecting her eggs in an empty cemetery urn if a deer had not stepped in to guard the expectant mother, WGRZ-TV, Buffalo, reported Tuesday. Passersby said the deer places itself between the goose and approaching humans or animals. The deer was once...

Goose Has No Mate, Deer May Be Protecting Nest BUFFALO, N.Y. -- An unusual springtime friendship between a deer and a nesting goose appears to have blossomed inside a cemetery in Buffalo, N.Y. For the past week or so, the deer has been standing near an urn where the goose has taken up residence, positioning itself between the urn and any passing car or foot traffic. Craig Cygan noticed the unlikely pair during his regular patrols with his goose-chasing border collies. He says there is no mate around the goose and he believes the deer has taken over the job...

BEND, Ore. -- It was a time of mourning for a few dozen people who gathered at Bend's Drake Park Thursday evening for a memorial to honor 109 Canada geese that were euthanized last week. Those in attendance expressed their feelings, observed a moment of silence for their surviving companions and families, and discussed ideas of how to prevent this from happening again. Organizers arranged the memorial event with the intention of "bonding together to promote proven methods of non-lethal methods of goose control."

BRADFORD – Readers at UnionLeader.com expressed outrage yesterday that the federal government had rounded up and euthanized 21 Canada geese on Lake Todd on June 23, in a response to at least two property owners' concerns. For seven years, the geese -- considered the largest, most common water birds -- have been fouling lawns and beaches along the 50-acre pond, which straddles the Bradford and Newbury town line. Federal officials said two property owners paid for the round up, gassing and killing of the now-flightless geese and their goslings. Their bodies were frozen and will be chopped up and fed...

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, - Some Canadians have expressed shock at an Oregon town for gassing 109 Canada geese and giving the meat to homeless shelters. City leaders in Bend, Ore., ordered the culling of the birds with carbon dioxide, leaving them safe to eat, and the meat was sent to area homeless shelters, CTV.ca reported Friday. Residents of Vancouver, British Columbia, expressed shock at the city's actions, with some walking around Stanley Park describing the culling as "barbaric" and "crazy." Aaron Jasper, head of the Vancouver Park Board, said he was surprised by the decision. "We don't take the approach...

"This is a smart goose," said Dr Levine, 82. "He happened to come into the yard of a veterinarian that could take care of him." After it recovered at The Raptor Trust, the goose was released last week into a stream in a wooded area on the trust's property. "It feels great...

The "Homecoming Queen" at a traditionally black US university has sent a letter to President Barack Obama, complaining that her win had been questioned on campus because she is white. "It would be much easier to say that possibly some were not accepting of the news because I wasn't the most qualified contestant; however, the true reason for the disapproval was because of the color of my skin. I am not African American," the nursing student wrote to the president. She asked the president for help, suggesting that he visit Hampton University to convince students to "stop focusing so much...
