  • IS Your Eye Evil Because I am Good?...Vineyard parables pt 6

For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way. Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise. And about...

A pastor commented on the moral and spiritual decline in our country inferring a need to focus on our spiritual issues, not just our political political issues. I agree that the underlying cause of our political and social malaise is a deep spiritual need to come back to a trust and reliance on God, not a reliance on man and his government. "Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the Lord. For he shall be like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see when good comes, but shall...

Psalm 91:1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. In the Old Testament, there was a place where God met with His people. In Exodus 25:22, God said, “And there I will meet with you, and I will speak with you from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim which are on the ark of the Testimony...” This place was above the mercy seat of the ark of the covenant, under the wings of the two cherubim. Living According to God's Word You have dealt well with Your servant, O LORD, according to Your word. (Psalm 119:65) David was a man who basically lived by grace (that is, by depending on the Lord to work in his life). Consequently, he trusted in the word of God ("the word of His grace"- Acts 20:32). David lived according to God's word. Psalm 119 bears substantial testimony of what can happen when one lives in this manner. "You have dealt well with Your servant, O LORD, according to Your word." The strategic phrase ("according to Your word") has two implications:...

Though Trump has denied mocking the New York Times' Serge Kovaleski, Priorities USA, Clinton's super-PAC, is jumping on an opportunity it thinks will resonate with voters. “Love God, Love Your Neighbor” (The Ten Commandments) “Love God, Love Your Neighbor”: Sounds pretty simple, doesn’t it? And it is. It is simple. And it is good and right and holy. This is how life is meant to work. This is how God created us to live. Love God and love your neighbor. If everybody operated like this, life would go along pretty swimmingly. "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all" (2 Corinthians 13:14). Though there is only one God, He exists in three Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. God is one, but He exists in three distinct Persons. We call this the Trinity, a contraction of "tri-unity," meaning "three in one." The word Trinity doesn't appear in the Bible, but God's existence as three Persons in one God is clear from Scripture. Old Testament evidence of God's plurality can be...

We’ve been hearing about the issue of sibling abuse lately because of the Duggar situation. How should Christians handle issues of abuse? First and foremost, it’s important for parents to not ignore the suspected abuse. Sometimes the thought is almost too much to comprehend, so it’s easier to just assume the best and hope it’s not happening—and that’s a big mistake. The best thing parents can do is address the situation head-on. I would encourage parents to speak to a qualified child psychologist in their area. Then I always recommend that when it doubt, always contact law enforcement. This is...

Let us begin with a church history exam question. Cardinal Robert Bellarmine (1542–1621) was a figure not to be taken lightly. He was Pope Clement VIII’s personal theologian and one of the most able figures in the Counter-Reformation movement within sixteenth-century Roman Catholicism. On one occasion, he wrote: “The greatest of all Protestant heresies is _______ .” Complete, explain, and discuss Bellarmine’s statement. How would you answer? What is the greatest of all Protestant heresies? Perhaps justification by faith? Perhaps Scripture alone, or one of the other Reformation watchwords? Those answers make logical sense. It is a vital principle of the supernatural life, as the rational soul is the vital principle of a human being's natural life. It is not a substance but a real quality that becomes part of the soul substance. Although commonly associated with the possession of the virtue of charity, sanctifuing grace is yet distinct from this virtue. A number of decades ago at the Ligonier Valley Study Center, we sent out a Thanksgiving card with this simple statement: “The essence of theology is grace; the essence of Christian ethics is gratitude.” In all the debates about our role versus God’s role in sanctification—our growth in holiness—we’d stay on the right track if we’d remember this grace-gratitude dynamic. The more we understand how kind God has been to us and the more we are overcome by His mercy, the more we are inclined to love Him and to serve Him.Yet we can’t get the grace-gratitude dynamic right if...

Human beings irresistibly gravitate toward a works or karma-based system because it gives man the false hope that his redemption is within his own reach. We’ve all known one of these “cage-stage Calvinists.” Many of us were even one of them when we were first convinced of God’s sovereignty in salvation. Cage-stage Calvinists are identifiable by their insistence on turning every discussion into an argument for limited atonement or for making it their personal mission to ensure everyone they know hears—often quite loudly—the truths of divine election. What does the force that causes objects to fall to the ground and the moon to orbit around the earth have to do with the unpredictable ground trembling of an earthquake? It is common in this day and age to think of the concept of grace as something of a prayer someone might say before they eat a meal, and mercy, as something of an act of restraint in wreaking loss, devastation, or retribution towards someone who committed an act against another person, or perhaps the inability to pay a debt owed to a certain person within a particular time frame. Today marks the 50th Anniversary of the death of Southern writer, Flannery O’Connor. Below is a recording of her reading her short story, A Good Man Is Hard To Find. “I am tired of reading reviews that call A Good Man Is Hard to Find brutal and sarcastic,” Miss O’Connor wrote before her death. “Grace changes us and change is painful.” Miss O’Connor was a Catholic writer living in the deep South who suffered from lupus – a painful illness that ultimately took her life at the age of 39. Her characters often encounter violent or humiliating situations that test...

The Gospel For Mormons Who Reject It A review of Starting at the Finish Line by John B. Wallace, a devout Mormon who ended up getting “burned out” by Mormon doctrine and practice. Written by Shane Lems | Wednesday, July 30, 2014 The bulk of the book really talks about grace – the fact that Jesus came into the world to die for wicked sinners and give them the gift of eternal salvation by faith alone (not by works). Time and time again Wallace explains how he was very works oriented in the Mormon religion. He shows many quotes and...

From a sermon on the Song of Songs by Saint Bernard, abbot Where can the weak find a place of firm security and peace, except in the wounds of the Saviour? Indeed, the more secure is my place there, the more he can do to help me. The world rages, the flesh is heavy, and the devil lays his snares, but I do not fall, for my feet are planted on firm rock. I may have sinned gravely. My conscience would be distressed, but it would not be in turmoil, for I would recall the wounds of the Lord: he...
