DNA is shedding light on the people who built Greece's earliest civilizations. Researchers analysed genetic data from skeletons dating to the Bronze Age, a period marked by the emergence of writing, complex urban planning and magnificent art and architecture. These ancient Aegean people were mostly descended from farmers who had settled the region thousands of years earlier. But they showed signs of genetic - and possibly cultural - contact with people to the north and to the east. Dr Iosif Lazaridis, from Harvard Medical School in Massachusetts, and colleagues focussed on burials from the Minoan civilization, which flourished on the...

  • The Times of The Gentiles...the west in prophecy pt 4

And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.(Luke 21:24)According to Jesus and the Prophets which preceded Him, there would be a long period of time, in which the Jewish people would languish under Gentile domination, as a consequence of the repetitive sins of idolatry and God defection. From the time the pagan King of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar came to Jerusalem in 600 BC, Jews have been ruled by Gentiles. Exactly as Joel had...

A 28-year-old Hellenic Air Force pilotsustained minor injuries Monday after ejecting from a Mirage 2000 fighter jet south of the Sporades islands group, but the incident brought to the fore the issue of old and malfunctioning aircraft currently in use. According to most initial assessments by experienced military officials, the Mirage crashed because of a malfunctioning engine which the pilot was unable to restart. The 28-year-old pilot was in a military hospital Monday with a dislocated shoulder, which he sustained while ejecting from the aircraft. He had taken off from Tanagra Air Base, north of Athens, in the morning on...

T he history of human evolution has been rewritten after scientists discovered that Europe was the birthplace of mankind, not Africa.  Currently, most experts believe that our human lineage split from apes around seven million years ago in central Africa, where hominids remained for the next five million years before venturing further afield. But two fossils of an ape-like creature which had human-like teeth have been found in Bulgaria and Greece, dating to 7.2 million years ago. The discovery of the creature, named Graecopithecus freybergi, and nicknameded ‘El Graeco' by scientists, proves our ancestors were already starting to evolve in...

Mohammed is approached by a middle-aged man wearing greasy beige pants, a blue shirt and a blue baseball cap. Although the man speaks Greek, the 17-year-old boy from Afghanistan knows exactly what he wants. "No," Mohammad repeatedly says in English, his voice cracking and his eyes filling with tears. But the man keeps pushing. "Come with me. I will give you food, pay you." The man only stops when he realizes he is being watched. He then grudgingly walks away and sits down on a nearby bench. From there, he starts scouring the field again, searching for another boy. It...

Greece will cease taking back refugees under the controversial Dublin Regulation, as the country’s limited capacities to host people are already on the brink of collapse, the Greek migration minister announced in an interview. “Greece is already shouldering a heavy burden,” Ioannis Mouzalas, the migration minister, said. “We accommodate 60,000 refugees... and it would be a mistake to make Greece’s burden heavier by the revival of the Dublin agreement,” he said, also adding that Germany, the primary destination for most refugees, “wants countries where refugees arrive first to bear a large portion of the burden.” Asked if Athens is ruling...
  • Turks push to turn iconic Hagia Sophia back into a mosque

    03/10/2017 8:18:48 AM PST · by cutty · 15 replies
For eight decades, the iconic Hagia Sophia [Ἁγία Σοφία, “Holy Wisdom”] – museum in Istanbul [Constantinople] has stood as a symbol of Turkey’s commitment to a secular society. Now that tradition is under siege by growing calls to convert the historic structure back into a practicing mosque. The 1,500-year-old structure originally was built as an Orthodox Christian cathedral. It was turned into a mosque in the 15th century after the Ottoman Turks defeated the Greek emperor in Constantinople and renamed the city Istanbul. In the 1930s, the founder of modern Turkey, Kemal Ataturk, turned it into a museum in his...

Athens's half a million Muslims are set to get their first official mosque in more than a century. The city has not had a formal mosque since it drove out occupying Ottomans in 1833, and Deputy Foreign Minister Ioannis Amanantidis told parliament last year that it was the only European capital "to be deprived of such a religious space".

An ancient marble slab that wound up on display in a midtown Manhattan art gallery after being stolen in Greece 30 years ago has been returned to Greek officials. The large sarcophagus fragment worth $500,000 was stolen from a burial ground near the port city of Thessaloniki and its whereabouts had long been a mystery despite an international search. The 400-pound artifact dates from 200 A.D. and depicts a battle between Greek and Trojan warriors, the New York Post reported. The Royal-Athena Galleries agreed to forfeit the piece when presented evidence of its theft, the paper reported. (snip) “Sadly, in...

If US President Barack Obama were uneducated, if his staff consisted of people who had never been taught history at school, if the government consisted of savages who have just emerged from the Amazon jungle, we could somehow "justify" their ignorance about the history of the Mediterranean and the Middle Eastern people. But that is not what is going on. This ambush against Israel in UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which considers the Jewish people "occupiers" in their own ancient capital and the holiest part of it, is an act of jihad and an act of political violence – perpetrated...

BERLIN — An Afghan migrant accused of raping and killing a medical student in Germany had been convicted of attempted murder in Greece and had violated parole there, but the German authorities were not aware of his criminal past when he entered the country, the government’s top security official said Thursday. The news added a disturbing twist to a case that has already rattled the country, and it raised concerns about European officials’ ability to enforce laws within the 26 countries that allow for free travel across their borders. “The course of events is very aggravating,” Thomas de Maizière, Germany’s...

Hotelier Andreas Vasileiou had watched with despair as refugees were shown living in wretched conditions across his country Greece. Vasileiou headed the family-run, seaside Hotel Rovies on Greece’s second-largest island of Evia. This spring he decided to act and opened the hotel’s doors to 88 asylum-seekers from Syria, Iraq, Eritrea and other countries, half of them children. The move was initiated by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and the plan was for hotels in Greece to host refugees - part of an accommodation program funded by the European Commission, and Vasileiou’s heart-warming gesture is featured on the UNHCR website. Vasileiou...
