Just Who IS This Obama Guy Anyway?

To some people, Barack Obama is just a hard guy to figure out. He won’t fit easily in the usual mental pigeon holes, and that gets frustrating. Just this week, Rush Limbaugh referred to the president as “a half-black, half-white human being with no experience running anything of substance.” I have no idea what made that “half-black, half-white” thing relevent. But apparently it’s an important observation, at least in Rush’s World. Then there’s the matter of Obama’s religion. Over at Politico, they noted that “Barack Obama invokes Jesus more than George W. Bush.” “In his speech Thursday in Cairo, Obama...

Daily Kos: Boy Scouts America's Version of Hitler Youth.....

US' own Hitler Youth- Daily Kos In todays NYT, there is an article about the boy scouts explorer program which takes scouts (boys and girls) between 14 and 18 and trains them in so called law enforcement activities. This proram now has over 35,000 members and semms to be concentrated in the border areas. My immediate reaction on reading the article was to think of the Hitler Youth movement in Germany of the thirties, and to this end I checked into Wiki and compared the two groups.

Axelrod Ruminates on Rove and Miss California (Axelrod calls Carrie Prejean a dog)

Finally, there was the conversation weaving between, of all things, Miss California U.S.A. Carrie Prejean, the same-sex marriage opponent who the panel had already mocked at length, and Bo, the Obama family’s Portuguese water dog. When Mr. Axelrod was asked how involved he was in the selection of Bo, he jokingly answered that he “only got called in for the final three.” But as Mr. Axelrod was trying to set the record straight – he actually was not consulted – Mr. Sagal asked about the two runner-ups. “One was Miss California,” Mr. Axelrod cracked to the audience’s laughter.

Spiegel Columnist: Sarah Palin is a Witless Racist

Article after article today denouncing Sarah Palin and John McCain, but especially Sarah Palin, for “injecting race” into the campaign. By which they invariably mean: bringing up Barack Obama’s troubling long-term associations with hardcore radicals of one type or another. Germany’s Spiegel Online gets into the act too with a venomous article by former TIME reporter Peter Ross Range: The Lone Ranger: Is Sarah Palin Playing with Fire?
Obama Suggests GOP Will Use Race to Scare Voters

Barack Obama told a group of Florida donors Friday night that Republicans will try to make voters afraid of him, and suggested they would use his race to scare up votes for John McCain. Apparently girding for a nasty general election fight, the Illinois senator has in recent days predicted that independent GOP groups are waiting in the wings to attack him, and said his presumptive GOP rival is already “fear-mongering” when it comes to foreign policy. But his comments Friday night in Jacksonville, Fla., seemed to reflect elevated concerns that his campaign to be the first black president would...

Rasmussen – Obama support drops

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Saturday shows Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton essentially even in the race for the Democratic Presidential Nomination. It’s Obama 46% Clinton 45% (see recent daily results). This reflects an unusually sharp change from yesterday’s results when Obama led by eight points and reached the 50% level of support for the first time. Daily tracking results are collected via nightly telephone surveys and reported on a four-day rolling average basis. Last night’s results were very favorable for Clinton and it remains to be seen whether this marks a lasting change in the race...

Opening Statement Dear FRiends: I once suffered two great frustrations in being a freelance political writer. First, the loneliness: you put an article out there, and you might as well have thrown it down a black hole for all the response you get. Second, the ghettoization: when you do get response, it would be from folks you agree with. Not fun for folks like me who reliish--no, crave and need--political argument. Then came the Internet, the blogs--and: problem solved. I have especially enjoyed having my articles in the Village Voice posted on Free Republic by "dead," and arguing about them...
