First Things discusses a concept that is supposed to be gaining ground in the UK: the duty to die. The key concept in Duty to Die is to remove control over life extension therapies from the doctor to policy. Dr Brian Keighley, chairman of the British Medical Association Scotland, said in some cases tens of thousands of pounds were spent on drugs to extend cancer patients’ lives for relatively short periods. Speaking ahead of his organisation’s annual meeting, the GP said the country had to debate the merits of these kinds of aggressive treatments and the effects they had on...

Implicit in the contemporary American health care system is a threat: Conform and spend your life behaving yourself in limited jobs or we will deny you insurance and put your health and your family’s future at risk. Restrictions on health care availability are an effective form of social control. We often talk about this in terms of women’s health care. But too often lost in the health care debate is the broader truth: health care is used as a weapon of control. In a certain sense, we can be healthy or we can be truly free. So much for Patrick...

Photobucket has banned my account with them. Reason? Because of hateful rhetoric. I posted several demotivational posters on there entitled universal healthcare head shot. It was an idea for a meme that a friend of mine in Santa Barbara came up with. It had pictures of the holocaust and so on and illustrated that a government powerful enough to give you free healthcare will not only deny you healthcare but even promote deathcare. Hence Hitler's holocaust and Stalin's purge. I also threw in pictures from South Africa, World war 1, China and so on. I was banned. According to the...

Everybody knows that libertarians are greedy capitalists who favor the maximization of profit above all else. “Taxation is theft!” they cry, but the exploitation of the working classes fails to elicit any similar moral outrage. Libertarians, everybody knows, care about the rich to the utter neglect of the poor and vulnerable. But everybody is wrong. The reason for the common misperception, of course, is that libertarians oppose many of the governmental policies that are commonly thought to benefit the poor and working classes. Libertarians oppose redistributive taxation, oppose the minimum wage, oppose workplace safety regulations, antitrust laws, and many other...

Who owns your body? Judging from our nation’s body of law, the ruling class wrongly believes the government does. However, you own your body and, with that ownership, you have a God-given natural right to do what you will with it, even if that means ending your life. That is the lesson we should take from the life of Dr. Jacob “Jack” Kevorkian, who died June 3 at the age of 83. As he once said, “Dying is not a crime.”

Anatomy and the Perfect (Undead) Headshot Does the creative team behind the hit TV show The Walking Dead take zombie anatomy as seriously as the legions of crazed fanboys? PM investigates. Horror aficionados judge onscreen zombie special effects by the quality of the cranial gunshots that kill the ghouls. The cameras of AMC's show The Walking Dead linger on the aftereffects of gunshots to the heads of their undead in a way that can only be described as lavish. The show's just-completed first season has been serious, emotional, well-written and epic. But for those kind of people who are obsessed...

In the end, it was a single moment that brought the hostage crisis to its dramatic finish. Capt. Richard Phillips, right, stands with U.S. Navy Cmdr. Frank Castellano after Phillips' rescue Sunday. Three gunshots. All three fatal. Fired in the dark by three specially trained U.S. Navy SEALs as the pirates' boat rocked in the water off Somalia. "Phenomenal shots -- 75 feet away," said Navy Vice Adm. Bill Gortney, who oversees the region. A senior defense official told CNN that each was a shot to the head. Gortney, in an interview Monday with CNN's "American Morning," described critical steps...

ITV News has obtained secret documents and photographs that detail why police shot Jean Charles De Menezes dead on the tube. The Brazilian electrician was killed on 22 July, the day after the series of failed bombings on the tube and bus network. The crucial mistake that ultimately led to his death was made at 9.30am when Jean Charles left his flat in Scotia Road, South London. Surveillance officers wrongly believed he could have been Hussain Osman, one of the prime suspects, or another terrorist suspect. By 10am that morning, elite firearms officers were provided with what they describe as...

The Brazilian electrician mistakenly killed by police in the aftermath of the second London bombings was being restrained by an officer before he was shot eight times as he was sitting on a Tube train, it emerged tonight. Witness statements and photographs from an independent police investigation leaked to ITV News also show that Jean Charles de Menezes did not run away from police at Stockwell Tube station in South London and was wearing only a denim jacket before he was shot dead on July 22. The evidence contradicts claims from the Metropolitan Police at the time that the Brazilian’s...
