  • Susie Walker Urgent Prayer Request

This is from Ron's update: "On Labor Day, Susie became unresponsive so we brought her to the hospital. After several blood tests and consultations with doctors, the final conclusion was that, unfortunately, Susie is not going to get any better. There are just too many battles going on in her body to handle all at once. Her mom, Elaine, said it better that I ever could with her comment made on Facebook this morning: “Susie is in hospital surrounded by immediate family. She is doing the work it takes – quietly, bravely, painlessly – to finish her life and let...

Presidential Press Secretary Jay Carney insisted that the President's admitted heavy use of marijuana as a teenager “does not prove he is a dope.” The question of whether President Obama may have suffered brain damage as a member of the infamous “Choom Gang” as a youth reared its ugly head when a recently completed study by two New Zealand professors measured an average decline in IQ of 8 points for heavy users of weed. “First of all, these figures are an average person,” Carney argued. “The President is already acknowledged to be so far above average that a decline of...

Odds are you sometimes think about calories. They are among the most often counted things in the universe. When the calorie was originally conceived it was in the context of human work. More calories meant more capacity for work, more chemical fire with which to get the job done, coal in the human stove. Fat, it has been estimated, has nine calories per gram, whereas carbohydrates and proteins have just four; fiber is sometimes counted separately and gets awarded a piddling two. Every box of every food you have ever bought is labeled based on these estimates; too bad then...

Proponents of the "Keep Home Care Safe" proposal are trying to sell it to voters by claiming it would create a program that's been in existence for more than 30 years. In reality, the measure would lock the forced unionization of home health care workers in the State Constitution if Michigan voters approve it on Nov. 6. Of course the real reason doesn't sell as well with voters so the Service Employees International Union and its supporters are pushing the idea of safety instead. Only the protections they're talking about have existed in a federal program since 1981. To get...

*Vanity post* I'm 55 years old, diagnosed with a torn meniscus cartilage on the inner right knee. Got injured playing ball about six months ago, slipped and fell running the bases. I had the knee drained and got a cortisone shot a couple of months ago, but it started hurting again recently. Got an MRI where the diagnosis was made. Not sure yet of the extent of the tear, or if there is fraying of the meniscus also. I am seeing an orthopedic surgeon and may possibly elect for arthroscopic surgery. Any FReepers have surgery for a torn meniscus? How...

States shouldn't be in a hurry to begin working on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act exchanges. That's the viewpiont of many states (not Michigan) and of J.P. Wieske, legislative liaison for the Wisconsin Office of the Commissioner of Insurance. "For us, the issue is whether or not it's good public policy to move ahead," Wieske told Capitol Confidential. This literally made me physically ill when I read this headline: Obamacare Begins Child Sterilization Without Parental Consent. According to the guidelines of ObamaCare, children as young as 15 years old can be sterilized at no cost, and with no parental consent. I assume this means both boys and girls. If a 15 year old wants to be sexually active, how attractive might sterilization be? No worries - forever, and who wants kids any way. I can see the 15-year-old brain processing it in a quick minute. Employees of the City of Chicago are being given the opportunity to voluntarily sign up for a new “wellness” program. Those who don’t sign up will be assessed a $600/year penalty—a protocol remarkably similar to the “tax” levied by the IRS on those who fail to purchase insurance under Obamacare. Mayor Rahm Emanuel praised the program saying “it will change lives. Left on their own, too many people degenerate into massive blobs of flab. It is our job to see that this doesn’t happen.” The program will require employees to go through a physical and mental health assessment, comply with...

This post requires an understanding of r/K Selection Theory in Evolutionary Biology, and it's relation to our political ideologies. For a quick rundown of this, please see our main page here. In a previous post we posited that homosexuality may be an extreme form of the reversal in sex specific behaviors which is seen in r-selected populations, where females become more “masculine,” so as to better protect and provision the young they raise alone, while males become more effete, so as to avoid the conflict which is dangerous and disadvantageous under conditions of r-selection. Those arguing over the constitutionality of Obamacare have consistently ignored the fact that Obamacare conflicts with the Supreme Court's ruling in Roe v. Wade. The Court's decision to uphold Obamacare may provide statements that could be used to justify regulating and possibly even prohibiting abortion. The Court wouldn't need to refer to Roe v. Wade to in effect overturn it. The justices could inadvertently overturn Roe v. Wade by making statements that conflict with it. Attorneys could use such conflicts to argue that Roe v. Wade is no longer consistent with the Court's interpretation of the Constitution. I'm going to...

Those promoting the "Keep Home Care Safe" ballot proposal want people to believe the constitution changing plan would create a benefit to allow disabled people to be taken care of in their homes. The thing is, that protection and a program to ensure it continues already exists. The federal Home Help Program would continue to exist in Michigan regardless of the constitutional amendment change that's being proposed. However, passing the proposed amendment in November would lock the forced unionization of home health care workers into the state constitution and ensure that the Service Employees International Union continues to get about...

The funniest thing about the r/K divide within our species is how pervasive it is. Everywhere I look, I see aspects of it manifesting in our culture, our behavior, our history, and even our future. Here is a free abstract from an interesting study examining the “balancing selection hypothesis” of homosexuality. Let me rephrase this, so it makes more sense. There may be a gene which produces women who are more fertile, have more offspring, and want to deal with children less. At the same time it makes men more feminine (and more promiscuous, since that correlates with homosexuality). (There...

Although highly reliable Rasmussen has Romney up by only two in this week's Florida poll of likely voters, the FMW's astonishing numbers may suggest a trend of some magnitude has already begun. Mitt Romney has chosen as his running mate U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, the author of an ill-conceived budget plan that he ambitiously named "The Path to Prosperity." In fact, Ryan's budget plan aims to put more money in taxpayers' pockets through massive cuts to many programs that have a direct impact on the quality of life in the United States. There is more to "prosperity" than money in our pockets. Financial prosperity does no one any good if there is not concomitant happiness or, at least, contentment. US dairy policy is made up of a complicated set of programs which work both to create steady demand and to raise prices for dairy...

According the USDA estimates, the United States will use approximately 11,885,000 tons of sugar in fiscal year 2012-2013. Yet despite this incredibly large and ever increasing use of sugar, few Americans are aware of the economic price we pay for the government’s cartel-like control of the US sugar market. With Congress expected to reconsider the 2012 Farm Bill when it returns to DC in September, it is important to understand how this control operates and the economic harm it causes to US interests. Sugar prices in the United States are kept artificially high through a 3-part system of economic controls....

In a study recently released by Mercer, analysts surveyed 1,203 employers, 60% of which were preparing for an increase in cost as a direct result of Obamacare. Of employers hit the hardest by...

Forget all the demagoguery out there on the Left and check this out... "No changes go into effect until 2028." "Nobody over the age of 55 will be affected by this plan" "Individuals will have the ability to look at a list of coverage plans -which also includes the traditional Medicare option- and they can decide for themselves what best fits their needs" "It empowers the individual, but also forces the businesses to compete for customers... when you have competition,  price goes down/quality goes up." "Medicare right now is failing, it's going to be falling apart- something needs to be done,...
  • Doctors want to treat gun ownership like a "social disease!"

“We live in a society saturated with guns and need better ways of preventing harm from them,” says a doctor who believes the federal government must take a “public health” approach to gun ownership in the United States. (1) Dr. Garen Wintemute, director of the University of California’s Violence Prevention Research Program likens the dangers inherent in owning a gun to those involved in driving a car. “Highway safety measures, product changes and driving laws…slashed deaths from car crashes decades ago…” says the doctor. And just as it “…wasn’t enough…to curb [highway] deaths by trying to make people better drivers…it...

Let’s set aside for the moment the question of whether it’s appropriate to talk about gun control in the wake of the shootings in Aurora, Colorado (though I can’t think of a more appropriate time to talk about it). And let’s not consider whether it makes sense that it’s legal to buy thousands of rounds of ammunition on-line in the U.S, without any background check (though could it, really?) And let’s not revisit that old argument about people, and not guns, killing people (though millions of “people,’ including evil and deranged people, do seem to live in countries with negligible...
  • Ad Blaming Romney for Woman's Death Defended

An Obama PAC ad blaming Mitt Romney for a woman's death because Bain Capital closed the plant where her husband worked has come under fire for its inaccuracies. The gist of the ad's pitch is that when the plant closed the woman's husband lost his health insurance. The woman subsequently died of cancer. The ad failed to disclose that the woman had her own insurance through her employer, that the decision to close the plant came at a time when Romney was no longer active in the management of Bain, or that the woman's cancer wasn't diagnosed until several years...

Team Obama likes to provide entertainment so let's join in the fun. Everyone in the United States who is not comatose knows by now of the Super Obama PAC (SOP) Priorities USA Action campaign advertisement claiming that Bain Capital shut down a steel plant and that one woman died of cancer. Both indeed happened. Not only that, but many other women, men, and even children also died of cancer. Why have they gone so easy on Governor Romney? Are they chickens, preparing to be served at Chick-Fil-A? [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMkmxJ3P9Tw?feature=player_detailpage] Here is a link. The head of the SOP defended the...
  • Tim Kaine Suffers Amnesia on Failed Tax Hike Attempts

Yesterday, Democrat Tim Kaine asked his Republican opponent to join him in taking a “balanced” approach to avoiding the looming sequestration cuts. Unfortunately Tim Kaine seems to suffer amnesia on his attempt to implement the same kind of “balanced” approach while he served as Virginia’s Governor. Such an approach included billions of dollars in new and higher taxes. Kaine called on George Allen to “set aside his Pledge,” and work for a “responsible path forward.” Translated, what Tim Kaine means is that he’s asking Allen to break his written commitment to Virginia taxpayers and join with him in an approach...

As a follow-up to Obamacare, insurance exchanges are being set up in 13 different states. The exchanges are developed as a means for people to shop for coverage when they do not qualify for Medicare or Medicaid and do not have coverage through their job. States have been grappling with what to call the insurance exchanges because many consumers either do not find the language attractive or do not understand what it means. In practice, consumers would go online and find private insurance options that meet federal coverage standards and low-income Americans could apply for tax subsidies to cover the...

My sister has been diagnosed with breast cancer, stage 1. An MRI was followed up by a biopsy at a clinic in Brooklyn after she detected lump. I don't know if she has seen a cancer specialist yet. She is having a tough time just communicating. She just started a job 3 months ago, and her company health insurance is not in effect. So, no help there. The clinic told her to apply for help through Medicaid. She makes maybe only $35,000. She was told that after getting accepted into some type of financial aid program that then she could...

Oregon is indeed a strange place. Somewhere George Orwell is smiling and wondering how his “1984” became a Democrat policy SOP. The morally hollow Democrats who run Oregon have descended to a level of insane devotion to government that would make Karl Marx swell with pride. Two current stories from Oregon give us an idea of the depravity we face when we make the mistake of allowing Democrats to run our lives. In the first story Gary Harrington, an Eagle Point Oregon man has been convicted of the crime of collecting rain water on his own property. He was sentenced...

Tax Provision Section 9003 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act changed the definition of “medical expenses” for Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), Archer Medical Savings Accounts (MSAs), health flexible spending arrangements, and health reimbursement arrangements to match that of the medical expenses deduction. Under the new definition, holders of account-based health plans will not be able to use pre-tax dollars to purchase over the counter (OTC) medications, unless they bear a prescription from a doctor. They will pay out of pocket for these products, and will not be able to deduct them come tax time. This provision went into...
