Credit: University of Michigan ======================================================================================================================================================================= Millions of Americans hear ringing in their ears—a condition called tinnitus—but a new study shows an experimental device could help quiet the phantom sounds by targeting unruly nerve activity in the brain. In a new paper in Science Translational Medicine, a team from the University of Michigan reports the results of the first animal tests and clinical trial of the approach, including data from 20 human tinnitus patients. Based on years of scientific research into the root causes...

Two days after an attacker opened fire on concert goers in Las Vegas, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisc) announced he was shelving legislation to deregulate suppressors. -snip- Ryan has now shelved the Hearing Protection Act, which was introduced into Congress on January 9; it is the legislation containing suppressor deregulation. The Act does not legalize suppressors–as they are already legal–rather, it removes the burdensome process for acquiring them and erases the federal tax that must be paid in order to receive permission to posses one. House Speaker Paul Ryan says NRA-backed bill to ease regulations on gun silencers is shelved...

Add this report to the growing list of grievances the American people have against the Obama administration. Washington Free Beacon says the extent of Cuba’s ‘mystery attack’ against U.S. diplomats in Havana may have been covered up by the Obama administration. Washington Free Beacon reports: The number of U.S. government personnel targeted by a mysterious illness in Cuba last year is greater than the Trump administration has publicly acknowledged, according to multiple U.S. officials who told the Washington Free Beacon the Obama administration may have misled Congress about the full scope and nature of the attack. U.S. officials disclosed earlier...

I need help from my fellow Freepers. An audiologist today found moderate hearing loss in the upper frequencies of my auditory system. She said my pattern is typical of high impact noises. I frequent the gun ranges, etc. Despite my proper use of hearing protection, I usually experience some temporary hearing changes after a couple of hours at the range. Today I discovered from my audiology appointment that these temporary effects are evidence of damage to my hearing, and some of that damage, however slight, has permanent consequences on my hearing, especially on the upper frequencies. Some people shrug off...

A member of the House Freedom Caucus on Friday called on the Justice Department's special counsel, Robert Mueller, to recuse himself in the federal probe into Russian election meddling. Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Az) said the "integrity of his appointment" was in question due to Mueller's friendship with ousted FBI Director James Comey. "His ability to be impartial is doubtful because he has surrounded himself with highly partisan lawyers who make a special practice to line the coffers of Democrats," the freshman Republican lawmaker said in a statement, referencing attorneys Mueller has hired who have Democratic political leanings.

TAMPA — Hillsborough County leaders voted Tuesday to move forward with a plan to add 90 miles of toll lanes to Tampa Bay's interstates despite continued opposition from the people whose neighborhoods would be impacted the most by the project. The Hillsborough County Metropolitan Planning Organization — a 16-person board which approves transportation projects — listened to more than 3½- hours of public comment on its Transportation Improvement Program, which lists the county's priorities for the next five years. The TIP includes dozens of projects, from road maintenance to bike paths. But the evening's debate centered around only one project:...

Readers have demanded to know what I think of the James Comey hearing. In the words of Daffy Duck, shoot me now. Okay, the slightly longer answer is: I don't think about it. And there isn't enough money in the world to pay me to think about it. But, if you insist, I will make a couple of points: 1) The FBI should not be in the counter-intelligence business. There are, as Democrats never tire of pointing out, "17 intelligence agencies", which is, by my count, 15 too many. We should at least get it down to 16, by eliminating...

Names of US citizens were unmasked and widely disseminated throughout the network. The unmasking of...

Photo of MDMA courtesy of Wikipedia Commons Researchers in New Zealand have started trials to see whether MDMA can treat tinnitus, a condition that causes people to hear irritating sound no one else can hear. The undertaking has taken place over the last two years, and involved a small number of participants who were given a very low dose of MDMA or a placebo and monitored over a four-hour period, reports Stuff. Many of the participants who took the MDMA reported a partial alleviation of tinnitus after three hours, but there was also a large placebo effect among the participants....

FBI Director James Comey refused to appear before the House Oversight Committee on Monday despite receiving an invitation to testify about the bureau's reluctance to disclose thousands of pages of evidence compiled in its year-long investigation of Hillary Clinton's private email use. Rep. Elijah Cummings, the committee's top Democrat, said Comey had declined to appear at the hearing because he had "already bent over backwards" to explain the FBI's decision-making in the Clinton email case. But Rep. Jason Chaffetz, chairman of the Oversight Committee, disputed the suggestion that he had even invited Comey, noting he had discussed specific points of...
