• An 80th anniversary: The airship Hindenburg bursts into flames

05/06/2017 12:02:17 PM PDT · by BenLurkin · 46 replies ^ | 05/06/2017 | ap
The disaster struck without the least warning. The ship had angled its blunt nose toward the mooring mast, the spider-like landing lines had been snaked down and the ground crew had grasped the ropes from the nose, when the explosion roared out, scattering ground crew and spectators like frightened sheep. The passengers, who were waving gayly a minute before from the observation windows, were so stunned they could not describe late what happened. Some jumped to the sandy landing field along with members of the crew. Others seemed to have been pitched from the careening skyliner as it made its...
• Hydrogen cost could equal 50-cent gasoline, with renewable energy: study

Green Car Reports ^ | August 19, 2016 | Stephen Edelstein
Hydrogen fuel-cell cars face an uphill battle toward mass adoption. Both cars and fueling infrastructure need to be made widely available before large numbers of consumers can seriously consider switching from gasoline to hydrogen. But under certain circumstances, hydrogen could prove very attractive to consumers for one simple reason. When produced using renewable energy, hydrogen could cost nearly the equivalent of 50-cent-per-gallon gasoline, according to a study by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). That will only happen if "the stars align" and several factors work in hydrogen's favor, notes industry trade journal WardsAuto noted in a June report on...
• Chris Christie: I won't state position on immigration unless I run for President

Gov. Chris Christie, who has long avoided wading into the immigration debate, said Thursday in Mexico City that he won't lay out his position on immigration reform unless he decides to run for president. "Until that time I have no role in the immigration debate, except for how it may affect the individual citizens of New Jersey, which I'll deal with as governor," the New Jersey Republican told reporters. "But I won't have anything to say on immigration unless and until I become a candidate for president of the United States," he continued. "If that happens, then I will articulate...

Chris Christie is plunging into what amounts to a cross-country revival tour, looking to recover from a clumsy political scandal and reclaim his place as a promising Republican presidential prospect. In one recent week, it was on-the-ground politics in Tennessee and New Mexico. This week, after a campaign stop in Pennsylvania, the New Jersey governor returns to the late night comedy circuit with an appearance on NBC's "Tonight Show." Then he'll stop by Mitt Romney's Utah summit, a private event for donors and GOP establishment leaders, and the week after that he heads to Washington to court Christian conservatives at...
• Christie Says Running Against Jeb Bush Would Be ‘Stressful’

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie doesn’t relish the idea of campaigning against Jeb Bush in 2016. In fact, a presidential primary tussle with the former Florida governor would be “stressful,” Christie acknowledged Tuesday. “You like to run against people that you don’t like, not run against people that you do like and respect, so of course it would be stressful,” Christie said on New Jersey radio station 101.5′s “Ask the Governor” program. “I am close with the Bush family … [Jeb] has been a wonderful friend to me, especially during [superstorm] Sandy and the aftermath,” he added. When asked about...

Today has the dubious distinction of being the 6th Hindenburg Omen in eight days. hindfed The New York Stock Exchange has seen a massive rise in its index since Quantitative Easing began. nyafed All eyes are on St Louis Fed President James Bullard for hints on tapering at 3:15pm EST today. Chances are he will say the same things as The Atlanta Fed’s Lockhart. Like the raptors in “Jurassic Park,” The Fed board members are doing coordinated attack patterns to signal their taper intentions. Raptors-in-Jurassic-Park--002 Both the US Treasury yield and dollar swaps curves are upward sloping indicating that rates...
• Treasury Auction: 6 Months Bid/Cover Separating From 10yr and 30yr (Expecting Fed To Taper)

The US Treasury auction went off better than last week’s 10 and 30 year auctions. ta36mth Particularly with regard to the bid/cover ratios. The 6 month bid/cover remains at 5.01 while the 10 year and 30 year are lower and at their 2nd lowest point since early 2009 when QE1 began. This is indicating that there are fears that The Fed will slow down the taper of $88 billion per month in Agency MBS and Treasury purchases. But at the long- and mid-section of the yield curve, not the short-end. Here is a chart of Expected Future Outcomes and Most...

The Federal Reserve’s Balance Sheet has swelled to $3.6 trillion since 2008. And The Fed keeps adding $88 billion in Treasury and agency mortgage-backed securities purchases each month. fedbal081113 The stock market has taken off like a jackrabbit, particularly after March 18, 2009 when the Federal Reserve’s Open Market Committee (FOMC) announced that the program would be expanded by an additional $ 1 trillion in purchases of Treasury and Agency MBS securities. $750 billion in purchases of agency MBS and $300 billion in Treasury purchases, to be precise. fedbalspx Now The Fed is hinting at tapering of the $88 billion...

“Something will happen to the back of the Hindenburg,” said a letter to the German Embassy in May 1937, just before the huge dirigible burst into flames above the Lakehurst, New Jersey. The letter was eerily correct, but lacked specifics. Was it a bomb? A hydrogen leak? A thunderstorm? A spark? Saint Elmo’s Fire? Scientists and engineers from San Antonio’s very own Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) helped design, test and build Hindenburg 1/10 scale replicas to test each theory 75 years after the fact. A team of local engineers, scientists and historians teamed up with the Discovery Channel’s series “Curiosity”...

The press corps has a mild buzz going about a weekend contretemps ginned up, for publicity's sake, by Sarah Palin's camp, in her ongoing campaign to show how badly she is victimized by the media. The odd thing is that she has been victimized by the media, horribly so, and many of us (myself included, in several posts after the Gabby Giffords shooting) have rushed to her defense -- so she doesn't need to gin up controversies out of thin air. But that's exactly what she and her team did this past weekend.

Way too much attention paid to the Hindenburg Omen, that this dreaded technical pattern flashed a negative signal recently in the markets, indicating a coming crash. Supposedly two Omen signals flashed fire engine red recently. But market analysts say that didn’t happen. A 50-year old financial newsletter writer, James Miekka built the Hindenburg Omen in 1995 using a calculus essentially based on Norman G. Fosback's High Low Logic Index. It essentially looks at stocks trading at 52-week highs and lows, and more moving parts that must miraculously line up in syzygy for the Hindenburg Omen to be set alight and...

One Possible Explanation For The Plunging Euro: Pension Accounting Change To Impact European Deficit Calculations There has been no explanation for this sudden weakness, although a reader proposes a very troubling explanation: As you might have heard 9 mainly EU-newbies sent a letter to the EC demanding to change the current system of account deficit calculation. They argue their pension reforms should be accounted for in the calculation. The letter was obtained by dpa-afx. Could be a reason for the dropping Euro. Of course, should this "reform" be enacted, Europe's deficits are likely to surge materially overnight, extinguishing any optimism...

It was the early evening of May 6, 1937 when the German Hindenburg made its fatal descent into Naval Air Station Lakehurst in New Jersey. Radio broadcaster Herbert Morrison famously wept for the humanity as the airship burst into flames and crashed to the ground. 35 passengers and one member of the ground crew were killed. Amazingly, 62 people managed to escape the fiery wreck.

Sources at the Iranian opposition said that the spiritual leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has died. The Iranian police have increased their activities in the streets of Teheran recently. For the time being, it is known that Khamenei lost consciousness on Monday afternoon and was hospitalized. Only his son and personal therapist have the right to visit Ayatollah at hospital. Khamenei reportedly lapsed into coma, although spokespeople for the Iranian opposition say that the spiritual leader has passed away. The Iranian administration has not commented the situation yet. Several western publications said that the information...

(CBS/AP) LAKEHURST, N.J. -- At 87, Robert Buchanan says he sometimes has trouble remembering what he did 10 minutes ago. But he can recall in vivid detail the day 70 years ago when he watched the Hindenburg erupt into a fireball. A burst of flames roared across the surface of the mighty German airship only a hundred or so feet above him, and Buchanan remembers his hair getting singed as he ran for his life. "It was a piff-puff, just like someone would leave the gas on and not get the flame to it," said Buchanan, one of the last...

LAKEHURST, N.J. (AP) John Iannacone one of the last surviving "sky sailors" from the U.S. Navy's rigid airship program in the 1920s and '30s and a hero of the Hindenburg crash _ is dead at 94. Iannacone, who survived the Hindenburg's airship crash and rescued passengers during the first seconds of its fire, died early Friday afternoon at Kimball Medical Center in Lakehurst after suffering a heart attack on Thanksgiving. He served in the Navy's aircraft carrier fleet and during World War II hunted German U-boats from blimps. "It's a really sad day for Lakehurst. He was an institution. He was the base's biggest support and our link to the past," Lakehurst commander Capt. L. Bret Gordon told the Asbury Park Press in Saturday's editions. "He could regale you with stories for hours. I feel bad that young sailors aren't going to have him around anymore." Iannacone spent 44 years with the Navy as a chief petty officer and civilian worker. In retirement, he remained active with the Navy's Lakehurst Historical Society, where friends described him as a nurturing type. "When all the school kids came out, John would be there to sign their autographs and take pictures with them," said Carl Jablonski, president of the historical society told the Press. Iannacone was a petty officer with a ground crew as the Hindenburg, an 804-foot-long German passenger airship, burst into flames on landing on May 6, 1937, killing 36. He helped save passengers by carrying them to safety.
