HONG KONG: Angela Yiu and Stella Cheng spent weeks meeting with fashion stylists and photographers before deciding on the miniskirts and high heels to wear in their promotion campaign. They're not models peddling perfume or sports cars. They're English tutors who earn good money helping secondary school students pass Hong Kong's grueling exams to get into college. “Their long legs are the most beautiful ones in the tutorial industry,” said Ken Ng, head of Modern Education, one of the city's biggest tutoring businesses. “This is our selling point.” Sex appeal has become a hot selling point, just as important as...

Maryville, Blount County (WVLT) - No matter where you go across the south, almost everybody's got an opinion on the rebel flag. If you remember earlier this month, the Maryville School Board banned the flag from any school related function, but an African American man well known to civil rights issues says that's not right and he's taking his protest to the roadways. Blount County Bureau Chief Stephen McLamb caught up with him on Thursday. The Maryville School Board this month banned flying the Confederate flag amid racial tensions but that hasn't stopped H. K. Edgerton, a former NAACP leader,...

MARYVILLE, Tenn. A civil rights activist is carrying a Confederate battle flag from Johnson City to Maryville because he says southern pride is being silenced with a pending school decision. H.K. Edgerton -- who is black -- says no more Rebel flags will be allowed at high school football games there if the school board proposal passes. The school board is expected to vote to limit flags and noise makers later this month. Maryville schools director Mike Dalton says the board feels like the group should deal with anything that's offensive to some. But Edgerton says banning the flag is...

Wednesday May 18, 7:00 PM Hong Kong marshals star power of Jackie Chan to boost Chinese nationalism Hong Kong marshaled the star power of Jackie Chan to boost lukewarm Chinese nationalism in the former British colony in a TV ad campaign unveiled on Wednesday. As officials showed off the advertisement, Hong Kong lawmakers debated a motion urging the government to require the hanging of the Chinese flag on government buildings, schools and universities. The latest moves were likely inspired by China's concerns that Hong Kongers aren't patriotic enough. Accustomed to Western-style freedoms under British rule that only ended eight years...

The HK-416 is a 5.56 x 45 millimeter caliber weapon that uses a Heckler & Koch propriety operating system originally developed for and used in other Heckler & Koch models such as the G-36. The Heckler & Koch propriety gas system does not introduce propellant gases and the associated carbon fouling back into the weapons interior (a fault in the M-16 rifle). HK-416 is available in four configurations including 10 inch, 14.5 inch, 16.5 inch and 20 barrel lengths. The system is similar to the Barrett M-468. It replaces the top of the M-16 rifle. A number of HK-416 carbines...

If you were driving down the road and saw a black man carrying a Confederate flag, what would your reaction be? Many of us would have to admit that we would be surprised to say the least because the sight of a Confederate flag is likely to spark strong emotions. To some, the symbol represents a part of the honorable history of people who held high principles. To others, the flag represents only hatred and oppression. At times, these opposing viewpoints reach the forefront of discussion such as in the case of whether clothing depicting the Confederate flag is appropriate...

I'm hoping for some good advice from fellow Freepers about which handgun to purchase. I'm a novice shooter (with handguns at least). Don't really know very much about them. I've applied for a conceal carry permit in Indiana, and I'm signed up for the next NRA basic education classes at the local range. This will be my first (and possibly only) small sidearm purchase. I don't want or need anything too heavy-duty. Just a reliable, effective, easy to use, accurate pistol for personal and home defense. I'm leaning toward a Glock 9mm, but I understand there is a wide divergence...

Sunday, January 22, 2005 Confederate Funeral For Mother of Local Southern Civil Rights Leader Anna Belle Edgerton's beliefs were as controversial in life as they were in death. Her son, H.K., a self proclaimed Southern civil rights activist and former head of the Asheville NAACP proudly carries the confederate battle flag at her funeral. He said, "I want people to understand that this is our flag, this is our Southland...even though folks don't wanna tell that story." The service was supposed to be held at Hill Street Baptist Church but waiting on the steps were the Board of Deacons who...

Initial reports favor Heckler & Koch, which is building local plant for rifle assembly George Thorogood's growling rock classic, "Bad to the Bone," set the mood Wednesday as two squads of soldiers leaped out of their Stryker armored vehicles at Fort Benning's Redcloud Range. As the music from the loudspeakers faded away, the 29th Infantry Regiment troops hit the ground in a prone position and proceeded to blast away at green targets on a hillside about 100 yards away. Dirt kicked up as one nine-man squad did their damage using the Colt M4 Carbine rifle that currently is the weapon...

The U.S. Army has asked Congress for an extra $26 million to buy 7,000 XM-8 rifles next year. These weapons would be used to equip to infantry brigades and thus give the rifle a wide scale test. The money requested would also pay for the staff needed to monitor the testing. The rifle has already undergone thousands of hours of user testing and there have been some recommendations, all minor. The buttons on the sight are to be rearranged, to make the sight easier to use. There were also complaints about battery life for the sight, and a new battery...

El Al places firearms in the suitcases of some passengers without their knowledge as part of a training exercise for security personnel. The practice was exposed last week after a passenger returning to Israel from Frankfurt opened his suitcase to find a pistol that did not belong to him. After alerting the police, the passenger was informed that it was a simulated weapon used by El Al security in training exercises. El Al is negotiating with the startled customer over appropriate compensation. "El Al Israel Airlines uses various measures and systems to ensure passenger safety," a spokesman for the airline...

PDWs Replacing Pistols January 5, 2004: Bye Bye Beretta, Hello PDW? The 9mm pistol cartridge has been in use for over 100 years by militaries and civilian law enforcement, but renewed efforts are underway both in the U.S. and European military establishments to field a replacement round, and a new type of weapon to fire it. The new weapon has been dubbed the Personal Defense Weapon (PDW) by NATO. This spring, the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab at Quantico, Virginia will be holding an evaluation between PDW contenders from FN Herstal and Hecker & Koch (H&K) in order to find a...

ROXBORO -- Under a warm October sun Friday, a black man carried the Confederate battle flag and led 20 white men up the middle of Main Street to the front lawn of the Person County Courthouse, singing "Glory, glory hallelujah. The South will rise again."The old song competed with the squelch and squawk of police radios. Outnumbering the marchers, police officers, sheriff's deputies and state troopers looked on from the corner sidewalks of the courthouse. As the short, gray-bearded man who led the march stepped up to a monument honoring Person County's fallen Civil War soldiers, he was met with cheers...

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hundreds of thousands of protesters took to Hong Kong's streets on Tuesday to denounce the government and its planned anti-subversion law in the city's biggest demonstration since the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre. "Return rule to the people," they chanted as the rally began to denounce the bill which critics say will impose Beijing-style control over free speech and the media. Brandishing banners, umbrellas and fans, many wore black on a sweltering day to mourn what they said was the demise of rights and freedoms in one of the world's key financial centers. Critics say the law,...

H&K MP7 PDW Personal defense weapons (PDWs) have been of military interest for some time. The United States issued a PDW requirement several years ago, but never brought it to a solicitation. Britain’s Ministry of Defense, however, declared its intent to purchase some 15,000 PDWs between 2003 and 2005. There has been no final action on this solicitation and like the American requirement it now appears dormant. H&K’s MP7 was clearly in anticipation of the UK requirement and others that might potentially follow, although PDWs as a class of small arm have yet to be adopted by any military service....

A black man who says he has no qualms with the Confederacy strolled through Tuskegee carrying a Confederate flag on the Alabama leg of a 1,500-mile walking trip from North Carolina to Texas.H.K. Edgerton, former president of the Asheville, N.C., chapter of the NAACP, said Thursday he wants to raise awareness of blacks who supported the Confederacy during the "War of Northern Aggression.""I'm reclaiming this flag for all the black folks that died fighting for it," Edgerton told the Opelika-Auburn News. "There were a lot of black men who fought bravely for the Confederacy."Edgerton said he sees the Confederate flag...

The folding stock on the MP7 permits shoulder firing for better accuracy. The handgun is also ambidextrous, with all controls, including the M16- style cocking handle, safety/selector lever, magazine release, and bolt-catch release accessible by the user’s right and left hand. A new handgun has reignited the debate over which type of bullet is best: small and fast, or big, heavy, and therefore, slower. The MP7 personal defense weapon (PDW) seems to embody the small and fast paradigm. De-vised by Heckler & Koch Inc., (www.heck-lerkoch- usa.com), it fires a 4.6 30-mm round (equivalent to .18 caliber) weighing about 26 grains....

HONG KONG -- The government proposed enacting broader police powers and life sentences for serious crimes against the state Tuesday in an anti-subversion law critics say could erode Hong Kong's freedoms. Officials insisted the law would be used only in rare cases and would not violate international human rights treaties or civil liberties promised to residents when this former British colony was handed back to China five years ago.
