On Hunting and Guns, Democrats Are Out to Lunch

Dateline USA.... When it comes to Sarah Palin, liberal and left-wing Democrats--and their sissified supporters in Islamizing Europe--miss the point. John McCain is crazy for choosing her as his running mate, alright--crazy like a fox. The Republican candidate picked Palin knowing that she would enrage and energize the Left, while appealing to ordinary, rural, semi-rural, and suburban Americans who resent being disrespected and disregarded by people they perceive to be elitist Democrats. The stupid (mainly meat-eating, hypocritical) Democrats, who have made a religion out of support for a hoax--manmade global warming--and opposition to two time-honored American traditions--responsible hunting and gun...

happy shoot-iversary to me

2 years and two days ago, I had never shot a gun. I didn't want to touch a gun. I didn't want guns in the house, didn't want guns in my life. No, no, no. No guns. No. I didn't like guns. A textbook case of hoplophobia, that was me. Mike spent a long time talking me into going to the range. I almost chickened out. I remember sitting on the couch, so afraid that I was near tears, saying, "No. I can't. I just can't, I don't want to..." "Just try it once. It'll be okay, nothing bad will...

Bacon....with salad dressing...minus the veggies. (Vanity)

I had another posting regarding using salad dressings to cook with, this is kind of a follow up, but with more detail.....and not for the weak of heart. My buddies came across something on the web about bacon cereal. This guy fried up his bacon, chopped it up and put it in a bowl (like it was cereal) and then added blue cheese (like it was milk).Naturally, under the theory that everything is better with bacon, we decided to come up with something similar. We would do the same thing, but instead of blue cheese, add bacon flavored ranch dressing...

Can you fry or cook with salad dressings? (Vanity)

Here is the question, in terms of both safety and taste. Can you cook or fry with salad dressing? I know you can marinate with some oil type salad dressings (alot of folks use italian salad dressing to marinate chicken, steaks and pork chops, etc). However, can you actually fry foods using say, creamy salad dressings? Like creamy italian or ranch style dressing? Or, also a weird but strange question, if you are eating something and pour creamy style dressing over it, can you put it into the fridge and reheat (probably via microwave) later on and eat it again,...

Steve Jobs Confirms iPhone Has a Kill Switch

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has confirmed that the iPhone 3G has a kill switch that can remotely remove software from the devices. {snip} But the real controversy started when Jonathan Zdziarski, author of the books iPhone Open Application Development and iPhone Forensics Manual, discovered a URL buried in Apple's firmware. That URL links to a file dubbed "unauthorizedApps" where malicious or simply bad apps might go once they disappear from the App Store. According to Zdziarski, I Am Rich isn't the only app to disappear. BoxOffice (renamed to Now Playing) and NullRiver's NetShare were also removed. But removing the applications...

Cool Stuff: Swedish Nyckelharpa (keyed violin)

Seen at a local Art & Wine Festival yesterday: A Swedish Nyckelharpa ("nickle-harpa"), or keyed violin. It's got 16 strings, only 3 of which are keyed at any time. The remaining strings vibrate sympathetically and generate a fuller, echo-y sound. Video clip here. And yes, there's an American Nyckelharpa Association. (Mr. Player Guy here wasn't too thrilled with my snapping his photo without buying his CD, so I chipped into the Tip Jar)

Video-gaming strives for respect. Is it a sport?

Attention will be riveted on the Olympic torch Friday during the opening ceremony of the 29th Olympiad, but in cyberspace, another torch relay is under way to promote visibility of a “sport” not yet ready for prime time in Beijing. It is the digital torch of the World Cyber Games, being passed from country to country, ultimately to land in Cologne, Germany, on Aug. 11. World Cyber Games? That’s right: pro video-game play. Before anyone snickers, remember that sports channel ESPN routinely showcases poker tournaments, which arguably involve even less athleticism than video-gaming. Indeed, competitive video-game leagues have contracts with...

Notes of a gun show debutante

Clive Crook's blog: I went to my first gun show recently - part of my ongoing remedial education in American cultural literacy, which my (American) wife has lately taken in hand - and I have been turning the experience over in my mind these past few days. As a Brit, of course, I was conditioned to expect that the first time I saw an unholstered pistol would be when a mugger stuck one in my face. That is how it works in a civilised country. So for me it was passing strange to see many hundreds of pistols - not...

Choosing Your First 1911

The first problem of choosing a 1911 is narrowing down the field of bewildering candidates. It's a process of elimination. The 1911 performs many shooting tasks extremely well, but it is often modified from it's basic format to perform some better than others. Knowing your reasons for wanting a 1911 as well as your intended purpose for it's use can narrow the field of candidates quickly. Do you want the 1911 to have one in your collection? Yes, that's a valid reason. Do you admire the tradition and the history? Another valid reason. If these are your reasons, then a...

Weekly Gardening Thread -- IT's JUNE!!!!!

Please remember folks --- this article is from 2006! June is here, and along with it, summer. Gone are the soft pastels of flowering vines such as jasmine and wisteria. The bolder, brighter summer colors of orange trumpet vine and the tropical colors of mandevillas are on their way. The soft, new greens of spring have been replaced by the harder greens of maturing leaves. Crepe myrtles and gardenias and hydrangeas are showing off their colors. Now that the things we hate about warm weather are back in full force-all the mosquitoes, sand gnats, yellow flies, and various other nasty...

Accidental Gun Deaths Last Five Years of Record

The number of fatal firearms accidents for the last five years of record are: 2002 - 762; 2003 - 730; 2004 - 649; 2005 - 630; 2006 - 680. I had to hunt a bit for this information, which I think many are interested in. The accidental firearm death rate is down 94% since 1905. You have to scroll down a bit on the link to find the figures in the source.
