  • Historic Preservation: A Criminal Offense

This is my first post so I hope this is ok. This is my own personal story. I am very actively involved in historic preservation and have a 100 year old house I am obsessively restoring. I have recently been criminally charged by the city of Lakewood, OH (the same city that confiscated the guns without a warrant in this article http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2771914/posts?page=92 ) for the historic preservation of my historic house. The full story is on my blog here http://1914foursquare.blogspot.com/2011/09/historic-preservation-criminal-offense.html I appreciate all the support I can get on this. Thank you.

Over 65 M completed new homes sit unused in China,  along with public buildings/accompanying infrastructure... If the Chinese property bubble pops... what then? The massive public projects under way in communist China today include sprawling housing developments, retail shopping districts, and 'forests' of skyscrapers. Since they were built to support the country's ongoing economic boom and real-estate rush, all these tower block condos, economic centers, and recently-built neighborhoods should be bustling with hard-working Chinese newcomers from the countryside... or so you'd think. But satellite pictures taken earlier this year revealed that China's odd unused-housing stock glut has only gotten worse, if anything: they indeed...

Hi! Just posting and sharing some of the newer things I've been working on. I recently completed a few fantasy type landscapes and have begun some other works in oils. For anyone interested in oil painting, I recommend the book "The Painter in Oil" by Daniel Burleigh Parkhurst. Written, I believe, in the early 1900's. You can still find copies on ebay or Amazon. Here's my sight.. I always read comments and appreciate feedback. Thanks so much... michaellekites

If you’ve ever seen a Ken Burns documentary, you’re familiar with their use of faded photos, archival video and interviews with renowned historians. Films like “The Civil War,” “Thomas Jefferson” and “Lewis & Clark” bring the past to life despite the decades of distance between the subject matter and the viewers. No doubt, his newest documentary, “Prohibition,” which premieres Sunday at 8 p.m. PBS, promises to offer a thorough historical examination of American life during the period around the 18th Amendment’s rise and fall. The three-part series focusing on Prohibition’s past, however, may lead the viewers to believe that every...

I'm having trouble finding any FR posting guidelines showing which sites may be excerpted, which are link-only and so on. I would have thought adding a link to that information on the page that appears when you hit "Post" would be a no-brainer, but I sure don't see anything like that. I've seen people referencing such guidelines quite a bit, but I've never found 'em.

The One Long Term Survival Tool Everyone Forgets. OK, the SHTF big time, and it is going to be a very long time until things settle down. You, as a prepper, have your food, medication and fuel stores, your guns and ammo, your water and power needs sorted out and your retreat. You have even arranged allies amongst your neighbours. You are set to ride this thing out until things slowly get back to normal. Your garden is growing, and the odd intruding deer, raccoons and rabbits that fancy a free lunch are making a welcome addition to your meat...

California Capital Airshow coming up Sept. 11th-12th...  Some highlights from last year's event: There are only seven Lockheed P-38 Lightning aircraft that remain in flying condition out of over 10,000 produced... five of them made this show. This gentleman is Col Bill Harris... now 95 years old.  He came to the even in a wheelchair and had a hard time making the few steps to the plane. But this P-38 was painted to replicate the one Col Harris flew in WWII; you see, Bill Harris is a genuine WWII ace, having scored 15 confirmed aerial kills of Imperial Japanese aircraft....

The Battle Ground (Washington) Reflector ^ | August 17, 2011 | Randy Starkey
My wife, Jan and I, and our children, Amy and Nathan Starkey, lived near Battle Ground until the early 1990s. Our son, Nathan, was in 8th grade at Lewisville Middle School and our daughter, Amy, was a student at Battle Ground High School in 1988 when a serious auto accident fatally injured Nathan less than a mile from school. Amy was driving and pulled out without seeing a logging truck. Though injured, Amy, and two other children in the car survived. Nathan, age 13, was buried in the Venersborg Cemetery, east of Battle Ground, near our home. In 1992, I...

A San Carlos woman fatally stabbed her boyfriend's pet bearded dragon in cold blood, the first act of a drama that ended with her in jail for trying to grab a sheriff's deputy's gun, authorities say. Shawna Apour, 37, killed the lizard because she thought her boyfriend was flirting with other women, said San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe. The victim was Speedy, a 14-year-old bearded dragon, said sheriff's Lt. Ray Lunny. Speedy clung to life for three days before dying.
