  • Gun enthusiasts start defense fund for George Zimmerman

    KDAF-TV ^ | March 29, 2012 | Henry Pierson Curtis
A firearms website created by some Tampa gun enthusiasts announced today it is collecting money to help pay for George Zimmerman's legal defense. Christopher Kossmann, 23, and three friends founded Legal Boom: Gun law for the Gunshine State last year to explain Florida's self-defense laws, he said. Describing legalboom.org as a "hobbyist website," Kossman said none of the members are lawyers and they pay expenses out of their pockets. He has not met Zimmerman, 28, but is trying to reach his attorney, Craig Sonner of Altamonte Springs to discuss the fundraising effort. Zimmerman told Sanford police he killed Trayvon Martin,...
  • Politics Blog: Scientists say America is too dumb for democracy to thrive

The United States may be a republic, but it’s democracy that Americans cherish. After all, that’s why we got into Iraq, right? To take out a dictator and spread democracy. “Government of the people, by the people, for the people.” “One person, one vote.” We are an egalitarian society that treasures the mandate of its citizenry. But more than a decade’s worth research suggests that the citizenry is too dumb to pick the best leaders. They know what's best for the country. Work by Cornell University psychologist David Dunning and then-colleague Justin Kruger found that “incompetent people are inherently unable...

For a while I have suggested that conservatives become organized into a real faction within the Republican Party and we are seeing what happens because we are not. Had we done so we would not be seeing two candidates splitting the conservative vote and allowing a liberal white minstrel show become the GOP nominee. Not only do we not have a great candidate in the race, we have two guys who both have some flaws. Newt Gingrich is one long train of baggage cars. Santorum is running as Mr. Rogers, he wants to be your neighbor. Amazingly there is also...

“Grizzly Guns” by H. V. Stent If you are planning a grizzly hunt or only dreaming of one, a big question is which rifle to use. On that fascinating subject, I’ve been amassing information for some 40 years of living as a teacher, fruit grower and hunter in that bear paradise, British Columbia, where stories of encounters with grizzlies and brown bears are enjoyed where ever sportsmen gather and are often headlined in newspapers and television newscasts. Such meetings sometimes result in a mauled man or shot bear, or both. A recent one ended with both man and bear dead....

If not, you might want to look into that- and learn how to use it: « Guns have only two enemies: rust and politicians. « Its always better to be judged by twelve than to be carried by six! « Cops carry guns to protect themselves, not you. « Do not allow anyone or anything that threatens you get inside an arms' length, ever. « Never say "I`ve got a gun."  If you need to use deadly force, the first sound they hear should...

As women's participation in shooting sports has increased, so have sales at gun shops leading up to February 14. It's a given that restaurants, flower shops and candy stores will be hot spots as Valentine's Day approaches. But another industry sees a somewhat surprising boom in sales before the romantic holiday: gun shops. With women's participation in gun sports on the rise and manufacturers responding with feminine firearms that are even pink and red, many are buying a new gun as a gift for their Valentine. A few years ago, Mike Blackwell, owner of Big Boy's Guns and Ammo in...

MONTICELLO, Ky. – Kentucky's houseboat manufacturers once thrived by churning out luxurious floating residences, but the industry was nearly capsized by the economic downturn. Now it's dabbling in a new venture as it looks for a different course — the construction of moderately priced, energy efficient landlocked homes. Houseboat maker Stardust Cruisers has built two relatively low-cost modular homes in a test that area residents hope will help revive the industry and bring back jobs to this struggling town on the edge of Appalachia....

OK, fellow FReepers, I've got a question. I recently purchased a Yugoslav Type 59 SKS. This is the original Yugo SKS, nearly a carbon copy of the Soviet weapon, not the later 59/66 with an integral grenade launcher. It's been around the block many, many times, but it still shoots as good as an SKS can be expected to shoot (which is to say just OK). I am planning on doing a full conservation project with it, because it has lots of nice cartouches and rack numbers. Moreover, it was finished with what appears to be dark brown shoe polish!...

Mitt Romney's Bain Capital record is up for debate in the Republican primary because: 1) Romney has introduced his record in the business sector as what qualifies him for president. 2) Since it's what qualifies him for president--his management style and other actions at Bain should be scrutinized. Clearly it is not anti-capitalist to address OR to question his actions. Any free enterprise business has the right to ask questions before 'hiring' someone. This election process is like America's job interview for the President of the United States. Questioning his record is 100% American, 100% capitalist and 100% free enterprise. We must ask: Did he show responsible decision-making? Were...

One of the fascinating little oddities of academic research is the amount of intellectual capital that the best and the brightest spend in order to catch up with the rest of us. “We consider the relationship between collegiate-football success and non-athlete student performance,” three economists from the University of Oregon write in a recent study. “We find that the team’s success significantly reduces male grades relative to female grades.” “This phenomenon is only present in fall quarters, which coincides with the football season. This is my first post so I hope this is ok. This is my own personal story. I am very actively involved in historic preservation and have a 100 year old house I am obsessively restoring. I have recently been criminally charged by the city of Lakewood, OH (the same city that confiscated the guns without a warrant in this article http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2771914/posts?page=92 ) for the historic preservation of my historic house. The full story is on my blog here http://1914foursquare.blogspot.com/2011/09/historic-preservation-criminal-offense.html I appreciate all the support I can get on this. Thank you.

Hi! Just posting and sharing some of the newer things I've been working on. I recently completed a few fantasy type landscapes and have begun some other works in oils. For anyone interested in oil painting, I recommend the book "The Painter in Oil" by Daniel Burleigh Parkhurst. Written, I believe, in the early 1900's. You can still find copies on ebay or Amazon. Here's my sight.. I always read comments and appreciate feedback. Thanks so much... michaellekites
