A firearms website created by some Tampa gun enthusiasts announced today it is collecting money to help pay for George Zimmerman's legal defense. Christopher Kossmann, 23, and three friends founded Legal Boom: Gun law for the Gunshine State last year to explain Florida's self-defense laws, he said. Describing as a "hobbyist website," Kossman said none of the members are lawyers and they pay expenses out of their pockets. He has not met Zimmerman, 28, but is trying to reach his attorney, Craig Sonner of Altamonte Springs to discuss the fundraising effort. Zimmerman told Sanford police he killed Trayvon Martin,...
• Politics Blog: Scientists say America is too dumb for democracy to thrive

The United States may be a republic, but it’s democracy that Americans cherish. After all, that’s why we got into Iraq, right? To take out a dictator and spread democracy. “Government of the people, by the people, for the people.” “One person, one vote.” We are an egalitarian society that treasures the mandate of its citizenry. But more than a decade’s worth research suggests that the citizenry is too dumb to pick the best leaders. They know what's best for the country. Work by Cornell University psychologist David Dunning and then-colleague Justin Kruger found that “incompetent people are inherently unable...

For a while I have suggested that conservatives become organized into a real faction within the Republican Party and we are seeing what happens because we are not. Had we done so we would not be seeing two candidates splitting the conservative vote and allowing a liberal white minstrel show become the GOP nominee. Not only do we not have a great candidate in the race, we have two guys who both have some flaws. Newt Gingrich is one long train of baggage cars. Santorum is running as Mr. Rogers, he wants to be your neighbor. Amazingly there is also...

I'm so sick of PS. They rig every high stakes hand. They always have a lesser hand win on the last (river) card when the pots are big. Also, they guy with the largest stack wins, especially when he has a lesser hand. FU pokerstars. I'll take my money somewhere else.

In the aftermath of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) 2012 we are seeing two things. The first is the “CPAC plague” where all of the attendees inevitably get sick after long days of networking and listening to speeches. The second is the deluge of blog posts complaining about the drunken parties and skimpy clothing.

• Grizzly Guns (World Record shot with a .22)

“Grizzly Guns” by H. V. Stent If you are planning a grizzly hunt or only dreaming of one, a big question is which rifle to use. On that fascinating subject, I’ve been amassing information for some 40 years of living as a teacher, fruit grower and hunter in that bear paradise, British Columbia, where stories of encounters with grizzlies and brown bears are enjoyed where ever sportsmen gather and are often headlined in newspapers and television newscasts. Such meetings sometimes result in a mauled man or shot bear, or both. A recent one ended with both man and bear dead....

Some words to the wise... Valuable shooting advice from certified concealed-carry instructors: if you own a gun, you will appreciate this. If not, you might want to look into that- and learn how to use it: « Guns have only two enemies: rust and politicians. « Its always better to be judged by twelve than to be carried by six! « Cops carry guns to protect themselves, not you. « Do not allow anyone or anything that threatens you get inside an arms' length, ever. « Never say "I`ve got a gun." If you need to use deadly force, the first sound they hear should...
• Valentine's Day sales of pink pistols and other handguns rise

As women's participation in shooting sports has increased, so have sales at gun shops leading up to February 14. It's a given that restaurants, flower shops and candy stores will be hot spots as Valentine's Day approaches. But another industry sees a somewhat surprising boom in sales before the romantic holiday: gun shops. With women's participation in gun sports on the rise and manufacturers responding with feminine firearms that are even pink and red, many are buying a new gun as a gift for their Valentine. A few years ago, Mike Blackwell, owner of Big Boy's Guns and Ammo in...

• Houseboat industry eyes new venture for comeback (Obama recession has 'em on the ropes)

MONTICELLO, Ky. – Kentucky's houseboat manufacturers once thrived by churning out luxurious floating residences, but the industry was nearly capsized by the economic downturn. Now it's dabbling in a new venture as it looks for a different course — the construction of moderately priced, energy efficient landlocked homes. Houseboat maker Stardust Cruisers has built two relatively low-cost modular homes in a test that area residents hope will help revive the industry and bring back jobs to this struggling town on the edge of Appalachia....

• (Vanity) Yugoslav type 59 SKS - Cleaning kit stuck in the stock!

OK, fellow FReepers, I've got a question. I recently purchased a Yugoslav Type 59 SKS. This is the original Yugo SKS, nearly a carbon copy of the Soviet weapon, not the later 59/66 with an integral grenade launcher. It's been around the block many, many times, but it still shoots as good as an SKS can be expected to shoot (which is to say just OK). I am planning on doing a full conservation project with it, because it has lots of nice cartouches and rack numbers. Moreover, it was finished with what appears to be dark brown shoe polish!...

The Democrats in Wisconsin will sink to any level to reestablish the union shakes down schemes cancelled by Governor Scott Walker’s agenda. They will join with anyone who hates Walker even Ian Murphy an anti-American blogger from Buffalo who is a hero to the left. Murphy reminds the unbiased reader of the dweeb in school who stood up and spewed four letter words at the teacher to suck up to the “cool” kids. Now he is attacking America to suck up to leftist Democrats like State Senator Tim Cullen who will run against Walker if the recall petitions are in...

Brit Phil Warren took 63 years to build this incredible fleet of 432 ships in exacting 1:300 scale- and check this out: every last one of them is built entirely from matchsticks and matchboxes. The amazing collection includes nearly 370 American and 60 British RN ships. Mr Warren started the first one in post-war 1948 when just a lad of 17, and the only tools utilized in their impeccable construction are razor blade, tweezers and sandpaper. Balsa wood glue keeps it all together.. and that's it. More than 650,000 used matchsticks and boxes were used to create the fleet (must know every...

In 2005, my husband and I started the process to adopt a little girl from China. It was a brand new scary process that we knew nothing about. All we knew was that we wanted a child. When I am passionate about something, I want to know everything I can about it. So, I did a lot of reading about China and adoption. One of the people I read about was a woman named Gladys Aylward. She was a poor woman from London who wanted to go to China in the 1930's to be a missionary. but she had no...

Holly is my 7 year old yellow Labrador. She is the very best dog I've ever had. She's everything a lab should be and more. She's also my two son's best friend. The 20 year old moved out recently and always teased he'd take her when he got his own place but I told him over my dead body. My 5 year old, well that is his buddy and the light of his life. He adores her beyond words. When he had his first eye surgery when he was 6 months old, she laid on the floor with him and...
• Why Gingrich Should Not Back Down From Questioning Romney's Bain Record

But As For Me ^ | 1/14/2012 | But As For Me
Mitt Romney's Bain Capital record is up for debate in the Republican primary because: 1) Romney has introduced his record in the business sector as what qualifies him for president. 2) Since it's what qualifies him for president--his management style and other actions at Bain should be scrutinized. Clearly it is not anti-capitalist to address OR to question his actions. Any free enterprise business has the right to ask questions before 'hiring' someone. This election process is like America's job interview for the President of the United States. Questioning his record is 100% American, 100% capitalist and 100% free enterprise. We must ask: Did he show responsible decision-making? Were...

2nd Amendment v. Stupid NJ Gun Laws - The 1st Court Opinion Do you think a federal circuit judge can think for himself or does he have to be told what to think? When there's a Constitutional civil right case before the lower courts, why do these guys kick it down the road? Do we really have to wait years for a simple matter to be decided because of the frail egos of judges? God forbid they get overturned on appeal. No balls. A more glaring deficiency is how easy personal ideology factors in. Some people have an agenda, as...
