  • Windows 7 users complain of unprovoked Windows 10 auto-upgrades (BOHICA hope ya like it)

As Microsoft auto-upgrades more PCs to Windows 10, some users are complaining that they weren’t adequately notified. Reports of unwanted Windows 10 upgrades have been circulating for the past few days on Reddit and Twitter, after the last Patch Tuesday. These users say they never approved or initiated the upgrade, and were dragged away from their Windows 7 (or perhaps Windows 8) installs anyway. This is all part of Microsoft’s plan, of course. Last October, the company announced that it would reclassify Windows 10 as a “Recommended” update from older versions starting in early 2016, at which point many more...

“The adventure began when we left the driveway,” says Larry Shank. “And that’s what was neat about the Jeep and the teardrop; you became part of the country from day one.” Shank is the proud custodian of this 1953 Willys Jeep CJ-3B and 1947 Ken-Skill Kustom Kamper Model 10, both bought by his father in period and used during their entire lives by his family for exploring the U.S. while on vacation. Traveling off the beaten path may seem extreme, but he has a different perspective: “You arrive not exhausted but exhilarated; because you’re already there, you’re already on vacation…”...

I stopped by the lake on my way home from work yesterday for a little mental health break. Watching the activity of birds, turtles and other critters going about their business as they have for eons melts the work-a-day stress. All is well with the world. The bigger picture continues to unfold. My little problems are placed in their proper perspective; now for the weekend! ENJOY!! Glossy Ibis - Check out the colors in those feathers! Sandhill crane checks her eggs before settling in for the night. Whited winged dove. Male I think.

I've had a recipe for a long time that I've hesitated to post. It's something that I enjoyed at a friend's home many years ago, and for which I only have very sketchy instructions. I've made it myself once, a long time ago, when my friend's verbal directions were still fresh in my mind - but I'm thinking that the great FR cooks can figure it out - and Good Luck to you :-) I believe that this recipe originally came from a magazine, back in the 1980s, but I don't know which one. It's a twist on Beef Wellington,...

Ruger is a bad dog, and that’s why he does his job so well. Just ask Megan Parker, the director of research at Working Dogs for Conservation in Montana. When Parker scours animal shelters for her next dog-in-training, she looks for unadoptable, hard-to-handle dogs. Ruger was born on the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana. His owner shot his littermates, and Ruger escaped. He was taken to a nearby animal shelter where he was found by a dog trainer who alerted Meg’s organization. It was Ruger’s drive that convince Parker to keep training him. She eventually paired Ruger with the scouts of...

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla., - A scuba diver in Florida is suing a utility company after he was sucked into a quarter-mile-long pipe that took him inside a nuclear power plant. Christopher Le Cun said he was scuba diving off the coast of Hutchinson Island with friend Robert Blake last summer when the pair went down to investigate three large shadows underneath a yellow buoy. "I swam right up to this big structure and it looks like a building underwater. I felt a little bit of current. All of a sudden it got a little quicker and I said, 'this...

The United States may have seen an unprecedented anti-Muslim backlash in recent months, but one New York museum has challenged perceptions by teaching children about the wealth and diversity of Islamic culture from Michigan to China. The Children's Museum of Manhattan on the Upper West Side has been turned into an indoor playground where children can touch and experiment with artifacts of Muslim culture in a vibrant, colorful exhibition. One little girl wraps a piece of Senegalese fabric around her middle like a sarong and wriggles around. "It's lots of fun for dancing!" she says.

Microsoft has ported its SQL Server software to Linux and has promised to release it in full by next year. From today, the Windows giant, which once likened Linux to cancer, will show off to a lucky few a preview of its SQL database's core engine for the open-source operating system. The full SQL Server 2016 for Linux will be made available by mid-2017, we're told. Scott Guthrie, exec veep of Microsoft's cloud and enterprise group, said in a blog post on Monday that the Linux port "will enable SQL Server to deliver a consistent data platform across Windows Server...

This is really a trivial question, but I figured posting it in chat that I might see a a response or two. I have a Proof 1989 (s) American Eagle silver dollar. (in original packaging). I was looking around at pricing on the thing, and ran into something really weird when I did an amazon search for it. I'm getting a lot of results at approximately $70 or so, and some at $300. They seem to be clustered around these two values. Does anyone know what's up with that? Is it a matter of grading? I'm not really into the...

A group of eagle-eyed puzzlers, using digital tools, has uncovered a pattern of copying in the professional crossword-puzzle world that has led to accusations of plagiarism and false identity. Since 1999, Timothy Parker, editor of one of the nation’s most widely syndicated crosswords, has edited more than 60 individual puzzles that copy elements from New York Times puzzles, often with pseudonyms for bylines, a new database has helped reveal. The puzzles in question repeated themes, answers, grids and clues from Times puzzles published years earlier. Hundreds more of the puzzles edited by Parker are nearly verbatim copies of previous puzzles...

To a lot of gun people, "action star" brings to mind flashy but impractical firearms, one-liners, and unfortunately often a painfully phony relationship between the actor and his weapons. However, as the shooting sports have exploded in popularity since 2004, we’ve seen an increase in celebrity personalities joining the fold, or revealing that they were a member all along. But enough jabber from me, here’s The Matrix and John Wick star Keanu Reeves tearing it up at 3-Gun:

I was at a local indoor action match a couple weeks ago. This guy came over and commented on my Wiselite Sterling Mk4 and Zenith Firearms MKE Z-5RS. He asked about the MP5 clone and then asked "Want to see a real MK4 and MP5?" Yes, yes I would. He had his friend go fetch them. We talked a bit waiting for the friend to return and he showed me some photos of his collection on his phone. I mentioned that I am a writer for TFB and so he invited me to check out his collection. This treasure almost ended up in the trash. Seven century-old baseball cards found recently inside a crumpled paper bag in the south have been authenticated as rare Ty Cobb cards, a California-based memorabilia expert announced Wednesday. The seven T206 Ty Cobb cards from a 1909-1911 series are expected to be worth "well into the seven figures" altogether, Joe Orlando, president of Professional Sports Authenticator in Newport Beach said

I'm taking a break from "The Election" for a bit. This is about pets and animals we hope to make our pets. I live in a small apartment, and split the rent with a few other adults. This rent-sharing happens a lot in this Bay Area due to cost of living, and relatively low crime rate. I own two kinds of birds, in one cage, I have two parakeets; Blueberry and Seven-Up. In the other cage, I have two Zebra Finches Coco and Maurice. All four are relatively low maintenance. Blueberry is a perch-robber, and sometimes won't let Seven-Up sit...
