Faith-based nonprofit organizations that object to covering birth control in their employee health plans are in federal court Monday to challenge a birth-control compromise they say still compels them to violate their religious beliefs. The plaintiffs include a group of Colorado nuns and four Christian colleges in Oklahoma ... The groups are appealing to the 10th Circuit in Denver, the court that ruled last year that for-profit companies can join the exempted religious organizations and not provide the contraceptives. The U.S. Supreme Court later agreed with the 10th Circuit in the case brought by the Hobby Lobby arts-and-crafts chain. The...

An Oklahoma school district is reportedly walking back plans to begin offering students an elective course on the Bible after facing pressure from a major atheist group. The class, called “The Book: The Bible’s History, Narrative and Impact,” was developed, in part, by Hobby Lobby president Steve Green, and it was set to launch in Mustang Public Schools, Raw Story reported. The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) said on its website Tuesday that the district canceled the class after Hobby Lobby allegedly did not provide the district with the final curriculum for approval and did not “commit to providing legal...

Evangelicals are mobilizing for the midterms.Pundits may be declaring the culture wars over, but conservative Christians are donning their battle gear and rushing back to the front lines. In recent months, a coalition of conservative evangelical organizations has been pursuing an aggressive voter mobilization campaign that involves a combination of high-tech tools, briefings for pastors, and rallies simulcast to mega-churches around the country. The goal of these gatherings is to drum up outrage over recent political skirmishes, including the Hobby Lobby lawsuit, and to persuade believers that their religious freedoms are under attack by ungodly forces. In a speech stressing the importance of protecting America's religious liberties and other inalienable rights that so-called "radical" Democratic policies are trying to limit, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, reflected on his own family's path toward the Christian faith, which included his father abandoning him and his mother when he was three years old before returning to them after finding Jesus. Before Rev. An Israeli museum on Thursday unveiled what it says in the oldest known Jewish prayer book in the world, dating back to the 9th century A.D. The prayer book, about 10 centimeters (four inches) long and seven centimeters wide, is written in Hebrew, contains about 50 pages, and is still in its original binding. Leadership: Say this for Texas Sen. Ted Cruz: He routinely takes principled stands on tough issues, even if it puts him at odds with his own party. Case in point: His comments this week in support of nuns and Israel. With the White House filing a new brief signalling it intends to force Catholic Sisters to violate their religious beliefs, the Texas Republican strongly defended religious liberty. Despite its defeat in the Hobby Lobby case, the White House last Monday was back at it, filing a brief in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado explaining a rule...

Well, as we cruise into the Sept. 9 primary with Baker against conservative underdog Mark Fisher, it’s time for an update. Needless to say, things have only gotten worse. These days it’s very seductive for the GOP across the country to think that they can avoid confrontation with the Left by abandoning their supporters’ principles on “culture war” and “hot button” issues and instead promoting on things like “good management.” But that’s wishful thinking. In the Hobby Lobby decision handed down last month, the Supreme Court was asked to strike a balance between women’s rights and religious freedom. AURORA, Ill. – A Hobby Lobby store in Illinois is facing a discrimination complaint after a ‘transgender’ employee was told that he may not use the women’s restroom until he has reconstructive surgery to switch from male to female reproductive organs. The employee, who goes by the name Meggan Sommerville, also professes to be a Christian. He has worked for Hobby Lobby since 1998, at which time he identified as male. However, in 2009, Sommerville began transitioning to look like a woman and changed his name. According to Sommerville, Hobby Lobby accommodated him by changing his gender in the company records...

You know it’s bad when the liberal Washington Post takes top pro-abortion Democrats to task for their misstatements, exaggeration and overblown comments in reaction to the Supreme Court’s decision to protect Hobby Lobby. We at LifeNews.com have profiled the myriad of ways in which the Post, over the years, has been a leader in media bias by virtue of its one-sided reporting on pro-life issues. Amazingly, the liberal giant took Pelosi, Reid and other top pro-abortion Democrats to task.It was bad enough when Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said “five white men” on the Supreme Court made the decision to protect...

I'm not sure that anyone can reason with Harry Reid right now. He is one angry white dude. Before we get started here, do me a favor. Go to the Internet and search "supreme court justice Clarence Thomas" and click on "images." And leave it up while you read. Harry Reid is railing against "white men" on the U.S. Supreme Court. Harry, Senate majority leader and one grumpy old man, is angry that the Court ruled 5-4 in favor of Hobby Lobby recently in a major case involving religious freedom. In case you don't know what the Hobby Lobby decision...

Senate and House Democrats are outraged by the Supreme Court’s decision in favor of Hobby Lobby in the firm’s lawsuit seeking exemption from the Obamacare mandate that employers provide, free of charge, contraceptives to employees. Senate Majority leader Harry Reid called the Supreme Court decision “outrageous” and Democrats have introduced bills in the Senate and the House to overturn the decision. Why exactly is it that Democrats find it so outrageous that in America religious freedom is respected? That we have law – The Religious Freedom Restoration Act under which the owners of Hobby Lobby sued the federal government...

Roughly 50 people lined up in front of Hobby Lobby’s new Totowa store Saturday to protest the company’s role in a recent Supreme Court decision that says the company can choose not to cover contraception for its employees through the Affordable Care Act.The Oklahoma City-based arts and crafts chain is owned by a Christian family that says it tries to run the business applying its religious beliefs. One of the parties in the decision by the high court, the family had argued that the Obamacare requirement that all contraception be covered violated a 1993 federal law that protects religious...

[Guest blogger Todd Unctuous is top commentator for MSM. With a degree in Media Studies from Scranton Community College, Todd writes for many papers and websites, and is known for his incisive writing, objective reporting and razor sharp comment.] As we prepare to celebrate the Forth of July vacation this weekend I am deeply concerned to find that a small group of rich white Christian men are persecuting women in their businesses by denying them proper health care. I have heard that the owner of Hobby Lobby insists that his female employees sign a contract assuring him that they are...

To the editor: When the Supreme Court handed down its Hobby Lobby decision, I was glad — glad because it would be the start of our country realizing how insane it is to link business and healthcare. ("The Hobby Lobby case proves the necessity of single-payer healthcare," July 1) I know that offering medical care to workers began as a perk, but having started something is no reason to carry on with an insane system that has made our medical care outrageously and unnecessarily expensive. Medical care must be made affordable to all, without having businesses get in the way....

We are the female plaintiffs, activists, lawyers, and judges working to dismantle this monstrosity, which threatens our First Amendment rights. There is no “war on women” in America. But there absolutely is a war among women. And the Health and Human Services (HHS) mandate is its biggest battlefield right now. The latest shot was fired by the National Organization for Women (NOW), who set all tact aside when they named the Little Sisters of the Poor among their “dirty 100” list for the nuns’ opposition to the mandate. The Little Sisters run more than 200 homes for the poor and...

Chuck Schumer has an odd view of the First Amendment. If on the basis of religious conviction you refuse to pay for something Schumer wants you to pay for, he believes you forfeit your right to have a business. Never mind that the Supreme Court just ruled the opposite in the Hobby Lobby case. At a press conference announcing a new bill designed to change the law that was the basis of that ruling, he put it this way: “We wouldn’t tell the owners of Hobby Lobby to convert to a different religion or disobey their religion,” said Schumer. “But...

Friend, Add your name today! I was very troubled by the Supreme Court’s recent decision in the Hobby Lobby case. The idea that for-profit corporations can stand in the way of employees accessing basic health care is outrageous. That’s why I’m supporting legislation that would reverse the negative consequences of the Hobby Lobby case. But it’s going to take all of us working together to ensure it passes. Will you join me in calling on Congress to undo the effects of the Hobby Lobby decision? Let me be very clear: a woman should be trusted to make her own healthcare...

Longer question, as space here now permits: But before that... The SCOTUS ruling was not based upon a/any contraceptive(s) either killing a fertilized egg or stopping its fertilization, but rather was based upon a closely held company being able to deny some benefits under religious objections. Question: If the owners of a closely held company have a religious objection to infertility treatments (some or all), as they may say that unwanted embryos are destroyed in infertility treatments, and thus they will deny this benefit, would the denial of this benefit hold up under the Hobby Lobby ruling? What about vasectomies?...
