Imagine it’s 1:30 a.m. and you’re in your apartment. You hear a knock on the door. If you own a weapon, you would probably grab it, just in case. For 26-year-old Andrew Lee Scott of Lake County, Fla., that decision would lead to his death. On Sunday, Lake County Sheriff’s Office deputies were pursuing an attempted murder suspect when they mistakenly knocked on Scott’s apartment door. Scott answered the door with his gun drawn at the deputies, who then shot and killed him. Unfortunately, Scott was not the suspect deputies were chasing. Deputies knocked on Scott’s door because the suspect’s...

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. - Lake County Sheriff's Office deputies shot and killed a man they assumed was an attempted murder suspect on Sunday, but they now know they shot the wrong man. In the early-morning hours, deputies knocked on 26-year-old Andrew Lee Scott's door without identifying themselves as law enforcement officers. Scott answered the door with a gun in his hand. "When we knocked on the door, the door opened and the occupant of that apartment was pointing a gun at deputies, and that's when we opened fire and killed him," Lt. John Herrell said. "Even though this subject is...

During the program the group would pray aloud. According to the residents, property manager Carol Conti told the group they could no longer pray aloud in the common space after a resident...

It doesn’t appear that Andrew Lee Scott had heard many knock knock jokes before because he forgot to ask who was there last night. Unfortunately for him, it was deputies from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office looking for someone suspected of attempted murder. Two problems: first, they didn’t identify themselves and second, it was 1:30 am. Both facts go a long way toward explaining why Scott answered the door with a gun in his hand. You probably know where this is going . . . “When we knocked on the door, the door opened and the occupant of that apartment...

Last week, Toledo police confiscated a handgun from a 92-year-old woman after she nearly blew away a police officer because she was afraid he was a burglar trying to break into her home. The incident highlights the potential for fatal mistakes when private citizens exercise their Second Amendment right to bear arms. But police should return the weapon to its owner if she is not going to be charged with a crime. Annie Huddleston's Indiana Avenue neighborhood is not the most dangerous part of the city. Residents of some blocks even describe it as quiet. But other neighbors say gunshots...
