Summary: Microsoft are disabling WebDAV access to all hotmail.com accounts. This means Hotmail Pop Links and Outlook Express access to hotmail.com accounts will stop working at the end of June 2008. {snip} ...Microsoft have changed to using a new protocol. Rather than offering an open and standard protocol such as POP or IMAP, they’re using a new one they call DeltaSync for their live.com and new hotmail.com accounts. This protocol is not an open or standardised protocol. It’s a Microsoft proprietary one and only works with their Windows Live Mail, Vista Mail and Outlook Office Outlook Connector.

I've been using the Windows Live Mail Beta for about a week now. Today, I've been trying for a couple hours but cannot login. The response is, "Server Too Busy -- We are experiencing higher than normal volume and are therefore unable to service your request at this time." Mrs. Newgeezer, at home, is able to login to her Hotmail account. So, I figure it's either a problem affecting only certain Hotmail servers OR it's something at my work location.

I've noticed a trend with my hotmail account that I get all my "junk" emails sent to. You know the kind of account that you use to sign up for free stuff and the like. Well in Hotmail you have a junk mail folder where the worthless stuff goes. I am signed up to receive emails from both parties, Republican and democrat. Guess which one goes directly to the junk folder and which one goes to the inbox? Just wondering if that is the case for any other user?

Syrian authorities have shut down numerous internet sites in recent days including the Hotmail portal. Among those in the firing line - for publishing news and messages that contrast with the Damascus regime or could be "dangerous" for citizens - is the Saudi daily Al-Sharq al-Awsat, which has taken an openly critical stance towards Hezbollah and various states in the region including Syria. Another critical daily, al-Shaffaf, has also had its online version rendered inaccessible. The hotmail portal was already shut down by the Syrian authorities in 2000 but then rehabilitated four years later. The official motivation for the latest...

Patriotic American users of Microsoft's Hotmail service may be surprised when trying to obtain an email address. The company does not allow new users to sign up for a user name containing the word "american."At first glance, it seemed that Hotmail is taking precaution to limit phishing attempts which often rely on official-sounding addresses to trick recipients into paying money to people posing as governmental entities. However, my quick check showed that names with "canadian," "francais," "german," "australian," "english," and "deutsch," are all allowed. User names with "america" are permitted, however. Names with "british," are not.It seems that American...

I apologize for the vanity posting. I also apologize if this is already widely known. I just got done trying to create an E-Mail address on Microsoft's free "Hotmail" e-mail service. Before creating an e-mail address/user name, one is allowed to check and see if the address one would like to use is already taken. I tried several different addresses which contained various Conservative words, such as "loyal-patriot@hotmail.com", to see if they already existed. These were accepted by Hotmail with no problem. However, when I tried to use the word "American" as a part of an e-mail address, I received...

The pesky Sober worm is to blame for disrupting e-mail traffic between Comcast account holders and users of Microsoft-based e-mail, Redmond said on Friday. A variant of Sober known as Win32/Sober.Z@mm is pummeling servers at Hotmail and MSN with "unusually high mail load," causing delays in e-mail delivery to Hotmail and MSN customers, said Brooke Richardson, MSN's lead product manager. Richardson also indicated that Internet service providers besides Comcast may be having problems directing e-mail to Hotmail and MSN servers. "We are working with Comcast and other ISPs to address (the) issues," Richardson said. "We're actively working to take the...

Yahoo Inc. will increase the inbox capacity of its free Web mail service for the third time in the past 9 months, now raising storage to 1GB, exceeding Microsoft Corp.'s Hotmail and matching Google Inc.'s Gmail. Yahoo Mail users all over the world will begin to see the larger inboxes between late April and early May, said Brad Garlinghouse, Yahoo's vice president of communications products. Yahoo, in Sunnyvale, Calif., decided to increase the inbox capacity because it has become apparent that users are increasingly storing messages with large attachments, such as photos, he said.

For over two weeks now I have been unable to log into my Hotmail email account on my home computer (logging into the account on other peoples' computers is no problem). 1) a new window opens up 2) according to my Status Bar the Hotmail site is downloading 3) BUT -- the site NEVER downloads! :-( 4) very often I will click on my MSN Instant Messenger (when I log onto my computer) and TWO HOURS LATER my computer's Status Bar will be showing that it is STILL in the process of "downloading" the site! (The Status Bar will only...

Sorry for the vanity - but I wanted to alert MSN and Hotmail users to a spoofed email I received that was supposedly from "Hotmail Staff". (I have an MSN account.) The email said they were reviewing accounts and there was some problem that needed clarification on my account. I was supposed to click on the provided link. However the link in the email was different than the actual link which would have taken me to http://securetrade-eu.com/check.php. The email said if information wasn't provided within 48 hours, my account would be restricted. I spoke with Tech Support at MSN and...

I know quite a few FReepers conduct business online via PayPal and I have this quick question: The ship-to address of every customer I've received payment from over the past 24 hours is invisible in the payment notification(s) which PayPal emails to my Hotmail account, after the completion of a transaction. I don't know if this is a PayPal issue or a Hotmail issue. I don't like PayPal as much as the next person, many times, but it beats having to wait a week or two for money orders. Just wondering if anyone else who uses both PayPal and Hotmail...

Microsoft founder and chairman gets 4 million e-mails a day, making him world's most spammed person. SINGAPORE (Reuters) - E-mail users inundated with unsolicited "spam" messages have reason to hope Microsoft Corp. will develop better tools for tackling the problem: Bill Gates is suffering more than anyone. Gates, Microsoft's chairman, gets 4 million e-mails a day and is probably the most "spammed" person in the world, his Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer said Thursday.

By Kenneth Henry The first reports of Hotmail’s magical, almost mythical 250Mb mailboxes began to surface just over a week ago. The second batch of official emails were sent today but unfortunately, they still promised jam tomorrow rather than allowing users to wake up to mailboxes 100 times the current size. Autumn is the intended release date, neatly covering themselves until just after Halloween for getting Hotmail users expanded worldwide. Not to be outdone, Yahoo has rebranded as Yahoo! Mail Plus, made the site ad-free for users who have paid for more space and allowed mail to be stored on...

March 23, 2004 Hotmail, Yahoo Users at Risk of PC Takeover By Ryan Naraine A potentially serious security flaw found in Web-based e-mail services offered by Microsoft (Quote, Chart) and Yahoo (Quote, Chart) could put millions of PCs at risk of takeover, an Internet security research firm warned Tuesday. Israel-based security consultants GreyMagic issued the advisory with a chilling warning that attackers could inject malicious code by simply sending an e-mail to an unsuspecting Hotmail or Yahoo user. The vulnerability only affects Hotmail and Yahoo running on Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) browser. "When the victim attempts to read this email,...

Internal technical problems at Microsoft caused eight hours worth of connection problems for their MSN messenger and Hotmail customers on Friday. US and Canadian customers were mainly affected. "The outage was pretty significant in terms of the number of customers it affected, but by now the services should be up and running for everybody," a Microsoft spokesperson said. Details of the internal problem were not released but the spokesperson said that it was not connected to the MSN messenger patch which was released earlier this week.

Some Hotmail Users Have Access Problems Mar 12, 2004 The Associated Press SEATTLE (AP) - Microsoft Corp. said Friday that a "significant portion" of people who use the company's Hotmail e-mail system and other Internet-based products were having trouble accessing the services. The company said it was an internal problem rather than an attack on its system and that it hoped to have service restored by 8:30 p.m. EST. The problem began earlier Friday. In addition to Hotmail, the popular Web-based e-mail service, Microsoft said people were having difficulties accessing products such as company's MSN Messenger instant messaging program. Malina...

I am having MAJOR problems....for starters, I am accustomed to usign Netzero ISP (used it when I lived in St. Louis, MO), but now that I am in Toronto, CA my fiancee has AOL....I have no problem dialing into AOL up here ("AOL Canada"), but when I open Internet Explorer (in another window) I am not able to pull up my Hotmail account and my www.50megs.com (free) website where I regularly post articles (to friends and family) that I find on Free Republic (I have converted a LOT of people to Free Republic this way!). It has been my experience...

Daily Hotmail at it again By Paul Hales: Wednesday 16 October 2002, 18:25 HOTMAIL IS UP TO ITS DIRTY TRICKS AGAIN. Users weighed down under the virtual weight of incoming spam take the wise step of filtering out and burning those spams which invariably emanate from the increasingly-sophisticated spammers of the world. Filtering out the incoming mails with the word 'debt' in the subject line works a treat for example, dumping a fair proportion of the spams wending their merry way into the size-limited inboxes of Hotmail users. Users determined, as we know, to keep using the service for free,...

The Microsoft pin in the financial balloon Pop goes the weasel vole By Andrew Busigin: Sunday 04 August 2002, 10:35 UNLESS YOU'VE BEEN asleep, or living in a hermit's cave, you are probably noticing that the Western world, is in a bit of a financial implosion. Europe is perhaps slightly less affected, but the American stock market is financially quite ill. Is Microsoft responsible? That's Crazy Talk! Maybe it is, and maybe it isn't. Financial systems are as robust as the weather, but there are theories that suggest a butterfly's wings can eventually lead to a hurricane. Any system where...

Hotmail now deletes users' specially-saved sent files The Daily Hotmail By Paul Hales: Friday 26 July 2002, 09:51 AFTER A BIT OF A LULL, the Daily Hotmail is back. Not that we've had a response from the fine folks at Hotmail Cenral to our inquiry about the magically-appearing buttons that invite spam that's now a good month old. And not that it's really daily any more either, but, hey, you'll allow us some poetic licence, eh? Anyhow, CNet has a story of woe from some poor sucker who used her Hotmail account to keep in touch with friends and family...

By Paul Hales: Monday 08 July 2002, 08:50 THE WALL STREET JOURNAL is feeling sorry for Microsoft. Imagine the headache the software company must have with spam, the venerable organ bleats. "You think you've got a problem with spam e-mails because of the dozen or so you get every day? Welcome to Hotmail, where they get more than a billion," says the Journal. Is it Hotmail, or Hotmail’s users that get this spam, we wonder. It goes on to say: "Hotmail started out free of charge. One reason Microsoft is now trying to persuade users to pay for it is...

Microsoft shares Hotmail users data without asking Vole employs sneak tactics to promote spam By Paul Hales, 02/07/2002 08:53:31 BST AFTER RANTING A LITTLE about how Microsoft benefits from spam by persuading users to upgrade to the paid-for service in order to get more space to accommodate all the Viagra/debt management/penis extension mail, we were bombarded with readers’ thoughts on the matter, some of which we published here. Now, it seems, the increase in spam to my own Hotmail account can be traced back to a move by Microsoft to add a couple of buttons to the Options screen on...
