Local House Reps unanimously opposed to bailout bill

WASHINGTON While dozens of their colleagues in both parties switched their votes from "no" on Monday to "yes" on Friday to help pass a $700 billion financial system rescue plan, local representatives remained unanimously opposed. Here's some of what members had to say after the 263-171 vote. U.S. Rep. Thelma Drake, R-Norfolk"I came to the conclusion that this bill is at its foundation fatally flawed. The bill pledges $700 billion of taxpayer dollars with no guarantee this will correct the underlying problem and stabilize the markets."Now that the vote is behind us, we all should agree that the next step is...

Wave of House converts jump aboard bailout bill

Wave of House converts jump aboard the $700B financial bailout on eve of make-or-break vote A wave of House converts jumped aboard the $700 billion financial industry bailout Thursday on the eve of a make-or-break second vote, as lawmakers responded to an awakening among voters to the pain ahead of them if stability isn't restored to the tottering economy. Black lawmakers said personal calls from Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama helped switch them from "no" to "yes." Republicans and Democrats alike said appeals from credit-starved small businessmen and the Senate's addition of $110 billion in tax breaks had persuaded them...

Republican ranking member on the House Financial Services Committee, Congressman Spencer Bachus of Alabama, is heavily against approving $805 Economic Rescue Bill in the House. Representative Bachus is being very forceful, insistent, and persuasive in his argument (against Barney Frank, committee chair) to the members of the House Rules Committee that there should be discussion allowed from the floor previous to taking a vote on what will be the House version of the Economic Rescue Bill. Representative Bachman (R, AL) wants the pricetag on the House version of the Economic Rescue Bill to be knocked down to $250 billion WITH...

Vote-switchers emerge in the House[Bailout]

At least three House members who voted against a Wall Street rescue package earlier this week have said publicly they are likely to vote yes when the chamber takes up the bailout again on Friday. Tennessee Republican Rep. Zach Wamp, a strong opponent of the measure at the beginning of the week, announced on Fox News on Thursday that he would back the bill. “This is the toughest vote, on some fronts, that I've ever made, because there's no good choice, there's no good alternative,” Wamp said.
Congressman Scott Garrett on bailout: fear is winning (Mark Levin interview)

Mark Levin spoke with Congressman Scott Garrett (R-NJ) last night about the bailout bill (passed by the Senate last night, 74-25). While Garrett voted against the House version Monday, he says that fear is winning out over freedom: Senate Conservatives Fund: Bailouts are bankrupting our countryIf the bill that passed in the Senate last night is signed into law, Congress will have added $1.4 trillion dollars in bailouts to federal spending this year alone. On top of that, the bill is packed with pork. Here is the breakdown of that money, what is already law, plus what is in the...

Two Saturdays ago, it totaled just three pages — the White House's request for $700 billion to rescue tottering financial institutions by buying their devalued mortgage-related assets. After an intense weekend of negotiations, the draft of the bailout legislation before Congress had swelled to 42 pages. The following Friday, after almost a week of marathon talks between Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and key lawmakers in both parties, the working version was up to 102 pages. It went down to defeat Monday in the House, mostly at the hands of Republicans.

But they should, because both streets intersect on every block in America. “In the sense that if the credit market dries up on Wall Street, capital will be unavailable on Main Street,” said University of Arizona political science professor Robert Maranto. “So no car loans, house loans, business loans and the like.” In the short run, Maranto explains, there is no reason to panic, but over two years it would lead to higher unemployment.
There are less than 40 days until election day. Pelosi and the stooges in the Democrat Party have handed the GOP a fat belt-high fastball over the plate with their mishandling of the Wall Street fiasco. There are now 58 House Democrats elected in districts that voted for Bush in 2004. There are now only nine House Republicans elected in districts that voted for Kerry in 2004. Those 58 Democrats in more difficult districts than the nine Republicans.
Hope? House Rejects Bailout Bill

Libertarians and fiscal conservatives will probably be happy about the news that the House has rejected the bailout bill. Maybe there is hope for the free market after all. However, I'm not so optimistic that this is the end of this saga. Yes, I realize the stock markets may crash in the immediate future if the government doesn't act. Nevertheless, I think the long-term benefit of not having a government bailout is much greater than the immediate partisan political interests of either candidate.
