The New Republic has quietly dropped at least five prominent Jewish writers from its masthead in a move that may signal the publication’s continued drift away from a staunchly pro-Israel standpoint. The magazine has launched an aggressive new editorial direction under the ownership of wealthy socialite Chris Hughes, who is best known for sharing a room with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg at Harvard University. The names of several prominent Jewish writers from both the left and right of the political spectrum were dropped from TNR’s masthead in the latest issue. They include: Daily Beast reporter Eli Lake, longtime TNR columnist...

Black radical WEB DuBois, who later joined the Communist Party, was the organization's first director of publicity and research, as well as editor of the group's monthly publication The Osiris. This publication gave DuBois an excellent outlet from which to pour forth all manner of racial invective against whites, supposedly in the name of "promoting equality." .... DuBois was known to have "hailed the Russian Revolution of 1917" and he travelled to the Soviet Union in 1926 and 1936. He especially liked 'the racial attitudes of the Communists'." In 1922 the NAACP started to receive grants from the Garland Fund,...

Michigan --(Ammoland.com)- A rare German Luger pistol once owned by aviation pioneer Howard Hughes could reach new heights when it goes up for auction in Solana Beach, Calif. on September 1, 2011 from Craig Gottlieb Militaria Auctions. The iconic handgun was used in the 1930 epic World War I film Hell’s Angels, which Hughes directed. The gun was used in the final scene of the Hollywood blockbuster that introduced actress Jean Harlow to the silver screen. It was one of the most expensive “talkies” ever produced. It was also notable for introducing the phrase “excuse me while I put on...

The value is based on Hughes' 22 million outstanding shares. EchoStar, which makes equipment for cable, telecom and satellite TV providers, said the deal is worth $2 billion including debt, which the company said it will refinance.

Background: In 1986 an amendment called "The Hughes Amendment" was allegedly attached to wider firearms legislation in The House and passed. This amendment made unlawful the private ownership of machine guns manufactured after 1986. Today, you can own a machine gun, but the Hughes Amendment, H.A.#777, effectively created a "sinking stock" of such weapons that will eventually dwindle to zero as they wear out. Hundreds of people have been convicted of violating this law since, some when their weapons have malfunctioned rather than being intentionally modified. There's a problem with this law, however. It appears that the amendment was never...

“For the last 24 years, rumors have persisted and variations based on memory have persisted concerning the passage of the Hughes Amendment (Machine gun ban) to the 1986 Firearm Owners Protection Act,” a Free Republic entry posted today begins. “Hughes Amendment”? Rep. William J. Hughes (D-N.J.) proposed several amendments including House Amendment 777 to H.R. 4332 [4] that would ban a civilian from ownership or transfer rights of any fully automatic weapon which was not registered as of May 19, 1986. The amendment also held that any such weapon manufactured and registered before the May 19 cutoff date could still...

Ajax22 over at AR15.com got his hands on one of the recently released DVD's of Congressional proceedings. In the above video, we hear a voice vote (that to my ears goes to the Nays) that Rangel calls for the Ayes, a call for a recorded vote that is ignored violating the Congressional Rules at the time, and an absolute cluster-fudge over the rest of the FOPA bill including exactly which Amendments made it on and...

I think one of the most striking things about last night's Illinois primary results for Senate is how poorly both Alexi Giannoulias and Mark Kirk closed. In the December Chicago Tribune poll Giannoulias was at 31%, followed by Cheryle Jackson at 17%, and David Hoffman with 9%. There were 35% undecided. Giannoulias ended up with 39% to 34% for Hoffman and 20% for Jackson. That suggests that over the final seven weeks of the campaign Hoffman picked up more than 70% of those who had been undecided to 23% for Giannoulias and less than 10% for Jackson. Not too impressive...

CHICAGO (CBS) ―Election officials say the crowds of voters just before 9 a.m. could be used as an indicator to determine voter turnout for the rest of the day. Going by that barometer Tuesday morning, turnout will be very light this primary. As CBS 2's Susan Carlson reports, there have been no lines to vote at Old St. Mary's Catholic Church, at 1500 S. Michigan Ave. in the South Loop. The election judges say it's been quiet all morning. But those who did cast ballots came with a purpose and they were well-informed. "I feel it's not only my right...

Patrick Hughes is the right choice for U.S. Senate. Hughes is a true conservative outsider who opposes cap-and-trade, bank bailouts, wasteful spending and earmarks. These positions have gained him the support of many Tea Party groups and 9/12 organizations throughout Illinois and the nation and the endorsements of conservative leaders like national radio hosts Mark Levin and Laura Ingraham. Unlike career politicians, Hughes is a small-businessman who has faced the same economic troubles that we have. "I can get the base fired up and ready to go, because I'm a traditional Reagan conservative." Illinois is a Democratic-leaning state... One of the striking conclusions in the latest Public Policy Polling survey in Illinois isn't who's leading in the quest for a Senate nomination, but how far all the candidates have to go in a very, very short time. Pat Brady, the Chairman of the Illinois Republican Party, says the anti-Mark Kirk element within the GOP is ‘fringe.’ That’s actually not quite true and is precisely why so many conservatives in Illinois don’t like Brady or Kirk — they feel repeated disrespected and treated as fringe. In fact, considering how active the Illinois Tea Party movement is in opposing Kirk, Brady is, in effect, calling all of those activists fringe. He might want to be careful. I just finished watching The Hoax the story of Clifford Irving's autobiography of Howard Hughes. As I understand the movie, Clifford Irving alledged that he was authorized by Hughes to write his autobiography, but this was all a scam. My questions is this: Can someone provide a fair analysis of the Hughes, Iriving, Nixon, TWA relationship? Especially with regards to contracts that were ultimately provided to Hughes and the subsequent watergate breakin. Is it likely that Hughes contracted Iriving to write the book in an attempt to pressure Nixon?

President Bush intends to name a well-known conservative commentator and journalist to lead the State Department's struggling efforts to improve the U.S.'s image abroad, replacing long-time confidante Karen Hughes, who is leaving government by the end of the year, The Associated Press has learned. Bush plans to tap James K. Glassman, now chairman of the Broadcasting Board of Governors, which oversees the Voice of America, to be the new undersecretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs, administration officials said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement has not yet been made. The officials said the...

Today, CNN's Jack Cafferty at the Situation room, attempted to connect K. Hughes' resignation with the immunity for those connected in the 'Blackwater' case. to: caffertyfiles@cnn.com So today it's "Blackwater" gate? What's that? another excuse why the Islamic world doesn't like us? Let me give you an inside secret, the agitators are by 2 forces:one is the Arab media [that has a "thing" about the west no matter what we do], the other one is blind hateful Islamic Imams [that could care less about a 'Blackwater' or any other 'waters', and more about a global Islamic Caliphate Emopure]. Did you...

When Ken Tomlinson calls for an investigation into the “cover-up” of U.S. Arabic broadcasting outrages, it is clear he understands where that probe would lead: to Karen Hughes, under secretary of State for public diplomacy and a long-time member of President George W. Bush’s inner circle...

I had not been to visit the main Navy website for several months, so it was surprising to find that none of my Navy history bookmarks work anymore. Unfortunately, all links in my collection of Navy bookmarks point to http://www.navy.mil and http://www.history.navy.mil. Attempts to browse to the site return a "DNS lookup error". (Army.mil and af.mil still work.) BTW, all of the links at the Navy recruiting site -- http://www.navy.com/sitesofinterest/ -- also point to navy.mil. All google searches on Navy topics seem to bring up navy.mil. Does anyone know if the address has changed? Or if there is a redirect...

A fellow UFC fan emailed me about the greatest Closed Captioned faux pas ever in the history of UFC captioning, or so I believe. I honestly somehow believe that this "faux pas" closed captioning was done on purpose with malice when Matt Hughes was introduced to the crowd as "Saddam Hussein." The email sender, Dave, sent me a few pictures of the Tivo'ed shots of the CC faux pas.

At approximately 4:05 pm EST today, Sean Hannity's screener allowed me to be the second caller to pose a question to Sean Hannity on air. When I heard my name and city announced and Sean said hello, I said good afternoon and stated "Sean, this will be the toughest question you've ever had to answer" and Sean said "have at it." [my question follows] "Sean, over the past many years, I've not heard you once, not one time - direct your listeners to go to our U. S. Congressional Record for the date of June 23, 1999. By Sibel Utku Bila - Agence France-Presse ANKARA - Turkey hinted yesterday that it may shun the start of EU membership talks next week as political tensions rose over the country's place in Europe, leading Britain to warn of a «huge betrayal» if the door was slammed shut on Ankara. Raising the risk of a political showdown, the European Parliament issued a stern warning to Ankara to recognize Cyprus and acknowledge that the Ottomans committed «genocide» against Armenians during World War I, two highly sensitive issues that have already strained ties. The Parliament did, however, endorse the start of talks...

Arab women shun Bush confidante By Francis Harris in Washington (Filed: 30/09/2005) A confidante and former chief image-maker to President George W Bush has discovered the limits of the spin doctor's art on her first tour of the Islamic world. Karen Hughes, the new US under-secretary for public diplomacy, was told by professional women in Saudi Arabia and Turkey that she and America failed to understand them. Her tour had been designed to underline the Bush administration's new commitment to improving its image in Muslim countries. Speaking to women in the Saudi city of Jeddah, the former television reporter who...
