Residents and others lament loss of trees

In the community of Shady Grove Woods, trees are becoming more and more scarce. Residents and other anti-Intercounty Connector activists marched through the neighborhood on Saturday, pointing out the trees that were cut down to make way for the six-lane highway. ‘‘It’s just that we didn’t have a say in it in so many ways and we’re not talking about a two-lane road, we’re talking about a major highway running through here,” resident Sam Chim said of the ICC. ‘‘We have a lot of nice, private woods back here and now we’re going to have a highway running through instead....

Rendell seeks loan for highway, bridge work

HARRISBURG -- With a section of a Pittsburgh bridge dropping 8 inches and an Interstate 95 support pillar cracking in Philadelphia, Gov. Ed Rendell is turning up the heat under the Legislature to provide infrastructure repair funds more quickly. Mr. Rendell sent a letter to all 253 legislators yesterday urging quick passage of a $240 million "supplemental debt authorization." His program of borrowing would enable state officials to fast-track repairs on some of the state's 6,000 bridges classified as structurally deficient, along with fixing ailing highways, repairing "state-owned, high-hazard dams" and beginning flood mitigation projects.
Panel Rejects I-95 Plan [Gov Rell CT radar cameras]

In a high-profile defeat for Gov. M. Jodi Rell, a key legislative committee on Thursday rejected her plan to install radar cameras to ticket speeders on a dangerous stretch of I-95. Invoking fears of Big Brother, lawmakers shot down Rell's plans for a pilot program in southeastern Connecticut by a 13-9 vote. The Democratic committee co-chairmen were split on an issue that came down to an unusual philosophical discussion over the rights of drivers and the power of government. The majority on the committee said the public's right to privacy outweighs the risks to public safety from speeding. They said...
