Multiple gun law reform bills are advancing in Iowa. Just before noon on 23 February, 2016, the House had accomplished the following: HF2279 Hearing Protection Act Removes ban on gun mufflers. Approved in the Senate last year, did not clear the House. Today, passed the House 74-24.From iowafcorg: Iowa is one of just nine states in the entire country that prohibits its citizens from owning a firearms suppressor. Despite how theyre portrayed by Hollywood and gun control advocates suppressors do not silence a firearm. In reality they cut the noise signature of a gunshot by approximately 20-25%. While...
  • Iowa Supreme Court labels all stun guns as ‘dangerous weapons’ (deem permit is needed)

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Supreme Court says a stun gun, under Iowa law, is a dangerous weapon. The court made the conclusion as it affirmed the conviction of a woman charged with carrying a dangerous weapon after police found a stun gun in her purse in 2013 during an arrest for theft at a Waterloo Walmart. Taquala Howse, who is 25, appealed saying her small hand-held stun gun isn’t dangerous. A district judge convicted Howse, finding the state had proven it was dangerous.

A pair of Texas litigators are following Cruz's lead as they gird for a Supreme Court battle this April. On the campaign trail, Ted Cruz has vowed to rescind President Barack Obama's controversial executive actions on immigration - but it's two of his former aides who could actually kill it. Scott Keller and Chip Roy - who served in top roles in Cruz's Senate office - are now litigators on behalf of Texas, leading the lawsuit against Obama's unilateral actions, which are at the cornerstone of the president's immigration legacy. The duo's positions also underscore Cruz's enduring influence and reach...

CNN is not only desperate to absolve itself of its legitimate responsibility for spreading the false idea that Dr. Ben Carson was dropping out of the presidential race last week, CNN is also hoping to complete a three-bank shot that will damage Sen. Politics is a fast-paced and unpredictable game, and sometimes, unfortunate things happen. That's the best way I can describe what occurred on caucus night in Iowa when CNN implied that Ben Carson was dropping out of the Republican race, and the Cruz campaign swiftly alerted caucus-goers that they should consider voting for Ted Cruz instead. A day after the Iowa caucuses and a week from the New Hampshire primary, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid is back blasting the lack of diversity in the states that come before his home of Nevada in the presidential nominating process. Asked about the outcome in Iowa, where Sen. Bernard Sanders, I-Vt., finishing very narrowly behind former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Reid highlighted his role in changing the process to put more focus on the subsequent contests in states with more diverse Democratic electorates. His efforts helped move Nevada’s Democratic caucuses earlier in the electoral calendar.

One more day to the Iowa Caucuses - and the public is pretty sure they know what will happen. Voters aren't necessarily happy about the influence the first caucus and primary states hold. Still, many potential voters admit that what happens in Iowa and New Hampshire will be important in deciding how they will cast their ballot. In the latest national Economist/YouGov Poll, pluralities of both Republicans and Democrats think Iowa and New Hampshire have too much influence on who wins the parties' presidential nominations. Republicans Chuck Grassley and Steve King were the only two members of Iowas congressional delegation to vote against the deal that has ended the federal government shutdown and extended the governments borrowing authority. King said once spending issues and the debt limit were joined in one bill, the momentum toward passage was inevitable. The American people have fatigue and I understand that, but its worth the fatigue if we can accomplish the goal in the end, King said during an interview with Radio Iowa. We didnt get that done in this battle. This battle is not indicative of the entire...

Iowa law enforcement officials are debating the wisdom of granting gun permits to blind people. The Des Moines Register reports that Iowa law doesn't allow sheriffs to deny a permit to carry a gun in public based on physical ability. Some sheriffs have been granting gun permits to people with visual impairments while others have been denying them. Blind people and other Iowans can obtain the permits for carrying a weapon in public because of changes to state law that took effect in 2011. Jane Hudson with Disability Rights Iowa said keeping legally blind people from obtaining weapon permits would...

Council Bluffs, IA -- It's a few seconds clip of Chrisshaun Moten. Perhaps too fast to show what his friends say was a passion for music. "Yeah, he was super-super talented," said Jade Jerkovich. She sang with the 17-year old and learned through social media Friday morning that the unthinkable had happened to her friend. "It was really-really surprising. You never think that that's going to happen to someone your so close to."

1 hour ago By STEVE BATTERSON, sbatterson@qctimes.com (0) Comments IOWA CITY --- When two-time defending NCAA champion Penn State rides into Carver-Hawkeye Arena tonight, Tom Brands is looking for a different type of rodeo. The top-ranked Nittany Lions handled the third-ranked Hawkeyes a year ago, winning 22-12 at home and the Iowa wrestling coach expects an improved approach from his team in todays 8 p.m. clash between the only remaining unbeaten teams in Big Ten action. The number one thing we need to do is fight, Brands said. As an example, Brands points to a 174-pound match in last...

AP) IOWA CITY, Iowa - An Iowa Board of Regents member worked behind the scenes to create a university institute honoring her husband, Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin, and then pushed for its approval before two of the couples allies left the board, according to an email obtained by The Associated Press. The 2011 email from then-Iowa State University Provost Elizabeth Hoffman describes the top-secret process that Ruth Harkin and a small group of officials pursued in planning the Harkin Institute of Public Policy, which remains mired in controversy nearly two years later. It noted that an ethics scandal involving a...

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) There's a new superpower growing in the Great Plains and the South, where bulging Republican majorities in state capitols could dramatically cut taxes and change public education with barely a whimper of resistance from Democrats. Contrast that with California, where voters have given Democrats a new dominance that could allow them to raise taxes and embrace same-sex marriage without regard to Republican objections. If you thought the presidential election revealed the nation's political rifts, consider the outcomes in state legislatures. The vote also created a broader tier of powerful one-party governments that can act with...
