Three U.S. students have been arrested in Cairo for allegedly throwing firebombs at Egyptian security forces amid ongoing anti-government protests. The Americans attend the American University in Cairo as exchange students. The school, which sits on Tahrir Square, the central protest site, confirmed the students' arrest. National television showed video of the three, identified as Derrik Sweeney, from Georgetown University, Luke Gates, from Indiana University and Greg Porter, from Drexel University. Kevin Sweeney, Derrick's father, told CBS Radio news that his son was being held in a courthouse in Cairo.

The bipartisan congressional committee tasked with finding at least $1.2 trillion in deficit reduction announced on Monday it cannot reach agreement by the Wednesday deadline, a stark if not unexpected admission that its efforts have ended in failure. "After months of hard work and intense deliberations, we have come to the conclusion today that it will not be possible to make any bipartisan agreement available to the public before the committee’s deadline," the co-chairs, Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, and Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., said. The declaration came late Monday afternoon in a written statement from the 12-member Joint Select Committee...

We don't want to caught in the chaos that you seem to want to coexist with, and we don't want to give our money to help pay for the services you all are providing to allow the campers to run the show. Occupy Wall Street protesters have apparently broken into "BlogCon 11." While the group went in to rile up trouble, those at the convention are taking it in good spirits and are openly mocking the OWSers. And instead of being offended, those at BlogCon are taking pictures and video of the idiots that broke in: Convention-goers are also chanting various things, mocking the imbecilic rants that OWSers repeat. One example: "More taste, less filling! More taste, less filling!" Update, 4:18pm- Some of the better tweets on the situation:

Short version: What's the tactful way to tell a friend she's marrying a loser, and should I bother? Long version: A friend of mine, who is nominally a conservative Christian, is engaged to her liberal Muslim boyfriend of two years. At many points along the way, I dropped subtle hints about how unwise it is for a Christian to marry a non-Christian. I'm not sure why she started dating him in the first place, but I have three guesses from observing the relationship from the beginning. 1) He pursued her relentlessly. 2) He's more masculine than most of the other...

As the Wall Street protests grow and expand beyond New York, growing scrutiny of the nascent movement is warranted. What do these folks want? Alongside their ranting about the inequality of incomes, the alleged inordinate power of Wall Street and large corporations, the high level of unemployment, and the like, one policy goal ranks high with most protesters: the forgiveness of student-loan debt. In an informal survey of over 50 protesters in New York last Tuesday, blogger and equity research analyst David Maris found 93 percent of them advocated student-loan forgiveness. Dear Chairman Bernanke, It is our understanding that the Board Members of the Federal Reserve will meet later this week to consider additional monetary stimulus proposals. We write to express our reservations about any such measures. Respectfully, we submit that the board should resist further extraordinary intervention in the U.S. economy, particularly without a clear articulation of the goals of such a policy, direction for success, ample data proving a case for economic action and quantifiable benefits to the American people. That gives us a baseline definition: “Basically complete” = 33% done.By that standard, we could say that joblessness is basically solved: 33% of the current unemployment rate of 9% gives us a basically complete unemployment rate of 3%. If the country weren’t in such bad financial shape, this would actually be funny. Or at least, you know, fun to mock, in a disbelieving sort of way. It seems that the state of Florida is spending a boatload of cash in order to buy capes for the jobless. I guess it’s to make them feel good about being unemployed or something. According to the Orlando Sentinel: Dubbed the “Cape-A-Bility Challenge,” a $73,000 public-relations campaign by Workforce Central Florida features a cartoon character named “Dr. Evil Unemployment” and includes handing out about 6,000 red superhero capes to jobless Central Floridians…...

The Burlington, MA, Mall was locked-down this morning after a patron screamed that there was a man carrying a rifle in the mall. Approximately 300 police and an undetermined number of local fire departments were dispatched to deal with the emergency. It was just announced that there was no gunman; just a shopper with an umbrella. Even for the vicious, Liberal, anti-gunners in MA, this may be a record. Perhaps someone can sum-up the total $ cost in emergency services and lost business.

In 2009, 5,474 people were killed on American roads due to distracted driving. Now, April has become National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The MSF has put together a list of 10 things cagers need to know about driving around motorcycles. I hope you’re not reading this on your iPhone from the driver’s seat. 1. There are many more cars and trucks than motorcycles on the road and some drivers don’t “recognize” motorcyclists. They ignore them, usually unintentionally. Look for motorcycles, especially when checking traffic at an intersection.

 2. A motorcyclist may look farther away than he or she is in...

Police in southern Germany warned this week of a dangerous new form of alcohol abuse among teens – using tampons soaked in vodka to get drunk quickly and hide the smell. The practice poses grave health risks, they said. Police in the Baden-Württemburg city of Tuttlingen responded Tuesday to growing online chatter among teenagers that they could become intoxicated using the vodka tampons without having alcohol on their breath. This is not true, police said, denying that it was an effective way to get drunk. They also warned girls that the alcohol could damage vaginal walls and increase the risk...

We want what we can’t have, and this reality comes through in a new study that found women are more attracted to men when they can’t tell how much the males like them. Though the study, titled “He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not … Uncertainty Can Increase Romantic Attraction”, was conducted on female undergraduates, one of the researchers said she believes the findings would also be true for males. But how did this phenomenon come about? Are we just bored by guys who are clearly into us, or do we simply enjoy torturing ourselves by being infatuated with people...

No, it was not a headline from the satirical newspaper, The Onion. It was just the latest scorn by President Obama toward conservatives everywhere, and conservative women in particular. The President has seriously nominated to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit Stephen Six, whose prints are all over the obstruction of justice in an investigation of an alleged systematic statutory rape cover-up at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Kansas. The people of Kansas know Steven Six well. Radical pro-abortion advocate Kathleen Sebelius, former Kansas Governor and now Secretary of the Department of Health & Human Services ,...
  • (WA) Groups respond to (gloomy) revenue forecast with rally against cuts to state programs

In response to today’s revenue forecast, which estimates the state’s budget shortfall for the next two years will be about $5.3 billion, about 1,000 teachers, health care workers students and others crowded onto the Capitol steps, calling for lawmakers to end tax exemptions rather than cutting education and social programs. The rally, organized by a group called Our Economic Future Coalition, is one of several that have taken place in Olympia so far this session advocating tax increases rather than cuts in the biennial budget, though state lawmakers say that approach would be very difficult politically. Collin Jergens, a spokesman...
