President Obama’s announcement of his support for relaxed enforcement of immigration laws on the children of illegal immigrants has not provided any lift for him on the issue according to the new Washington Post-ABC News poll. His approval rating on dealing with immigration issues is no better (nor worse) than it was two years ago, and he runs evenly with former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney on who people trust to handle the issue. Fewer than one in five voters — 18 percent — say immigration is an extremely important issue in their vote. In the Post’s key eight toss-up states...

Remember when President Obama stood in the Rose Garden and told the American people of his administration’s new plan to stop the deportation of younger illegal immigrants if they met certain criteria? Remember when he promised the policy change isn’t amnesty?     Over to you, Washington Times: Federal immigration authorities have begun granting tentative legal status to illegal immigrants under President Obama’s deportation halt — and in some cases are even ignoring the administration’s eligibility rules to stop deportations for those who shouldn’t qualify, according to the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.   Rep. Lamar Smith, Texas Republican,...

Indiana's budget director calculates illegal immigrants have cost Indiana $130.9 million. Budget Director Adam Horst sent Congress a bill for the amount Friday as required under Indiana's illegal immigration law passed last year by the General Assembly. Congress is not expected to act on the request, however. Indiana's law was modeled on the 2010 Arizona illegal immigration bill whose key provisions were struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday. Horst estimated $110.6 million of the state's illegal immigrant costs have been for K-12 education. He estimated prison costs at $12.3 million and welfare costs at nearly $8 million.

But in the office of her immigration attorney, Jeffrey B. Rubin, Raquel’s hopes were dashed: She had turned 31 at the end of April. PHOENIX (AP) — Some leaders in Arizona's homebuilding industry are concerned about a potential labor shortage following the Supreme Court's decision to uphold part of the state's controversial immigration law known as SB1070. The bill's passage two years ago led thousands of illegal immigrants to pack up and leave. That was when the housing market had crashed, but now the market is recovering. The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the provision in the law that allows police to try to determine the immigration status of people they stop or arrest if they have a reasonable suspicion that they're in the...

The Supreme Court’s decision, announced Monday, in Arizona v. United States opens the way for sensible reform of our immigration laws.Barack Obama and his administration have taken heart that the court overturned Arizona’s state penalties for illegal immigrants. The idea is that states can’t pile higher penalties on top of those voted by Congress, just as states can’t deport people whom Congress allowed into the country. But the much more significant part of the case was the unanimous 8–0 (Justice Kagan not voting) ruling upholding the Arizona provision authorizing state and local law-enforcement personnel to help enforce federal law by...

The top-line number getting the most attention is Obama's erosion of support over the past month. A month ago, Obama led Romney by 7. Perhaps more interesting in today's poll, though, is the sharp drop-off in Obama's support among white Democrats.

There’s a lot of talk today about the Supreme Court ruling, and I’ve seen some good analysis here. However, there are many provisions in SB 1070 that went into effect two years ago that should not be ignored, and, hopefully, are being picked up in other states. Only 4 parts of the law were enjoined. The rest was left standing, and because it DID have a severability clause, the rest of the law remains untouched. There’s a great analysis of the enjoined sections and, as Governor Brewer pointed out, the law is only a few pages long and is easy...

I think this might serve as basis for a counter-suit. The Obama administration said Monday it is suspending existing agreements with Arizona police over enforcement of federal immigration laws, and said it has issued a directive telling federal authorities to decline many of the calls reporting illegal immigrants that the Homeland Security Department may get from Arizona police. President Barack Obama's recent decision to grant immunity to young undocumented Latinos proves that he does not want the public involved in the immigration debate. After failing to secure meaningful reform, the president took the extraordinary step in circumventing Congress and issued an executive order deferring deportation laws calling it the "right thing to do." Though only Congress has the authority under the Constitution to define citizenship, the president -- sensing political disaster in November -- usurped congressional power to enact his own agenda. In March the US bishops’ conference (USCCB) announced that “we will not rest” until Congress ensures that religious freedom is protected in the federal health-care reform program. The USCCB followed up that clear and forceful message a few week later with a new, statement announcing a major offensive in defense of religious liberty. These powerful statements seemed to indicate clearly that religious freedom would be the focus—the focus—of the bishops’ political efforts this year. The USCCB issued a clarion call to the Catholic laity, asking for help with this campaign. Cardinal Dolan called out President Obama; Bishop Lori challenged Congress....

TULTITLAN, Mexico — The travelers, with bloodshot eyes and sleep-wrinkled clothes, press around a man with a map of Mexico taped to the wall. He speaks, and his finger traces various routes north to the border. All roads lead to trouble. Up here, kidnappers and drug killers. Over there, Mexican army checkpoints. Farther along, a giant desert, with poisonous snakes and deadly heat. They are migrants, almost all from Central America, and they have endured much to reach this place, a church-run shelter about an hour's drive north of Mexico City. And they will endure more. The man with the...
  • Why do illegal immigrants have the right to an attorney? [vanity]

    05/01/2012 4:23:48 PM PDT · by Feline_AIDS · 19 replies
Just watched an episode of The First 48 (great show, btw), and the two suspects were Mexican nationals, aka illegal immigrants. The show did acknowledge both men are/were in the country illegally. The police got a surviving victim to identify the suspects in a photo line up. Then the police found them hiding out in rural west Texas and brought them in. Right off the bat they both asked for attorneys. Why do they have that right? And of course it's absurd that they get taxpayer-funded public defenders, but that's not really the issue. If they're not citizens, why do...

Sales of suitcases and duffel bags are brisk at Las Petacas Luggage on E. Lake Street in Minneapolis. Owner Santos Jimenez Hernandes says he sells lots of luggage to people on their way back to Mexico. "The majority of the people are telling me that they've had problems with immigration," he said. Signs of the change are evident in Minnesota, where the number of Mexican-born immigrants has "leveled off some" over the past five years and is now around 60,000, according to estimates from State Demographer Susan Brower. Brower said her sense is that the number of jobs has declined....

For years, my father, a federal employee with a top secret clearance, carried a copy of his birth certificate when he went into Baja California from our home in San Diego. Many times, when he tried to reenter the U.S., he was stopped by the Border Patrol. My father had thick black hair and naturally dark skin, and the Patrol thought he was a Mexican brazenly trying to sneak back into the country by claiming to be married to the black-haired, blue- eyed, light-skinned woman he claimed was his wife. Once back home, he faced discrimination because neighbors thought he...
  • Calderón says immigration should not divide U.S., Mexico

Mexican President Felipe Calderón, in Houston Wednesday as part of a brief U.S. visit, sounded a victorious note for his six-year-tenure, saying his policies have helped to drastically reduce the flow of Mexican migrants to the United States, but criticized a "regressive policy toward workers, a hard and offensive type of politics" in the U.S., exemplified in Arizona's tough immigration law. Appearing likely to be upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court, who heard arguments on it this week, the law would mandate police check whether people they stop are here legally. "We don't think it's just that someone is discriminated...
  • Romney, on immigration, rewrites some history

It was only a couple of months ago that Mitt Romney told a Republican debate audience in Arizona that the state was a “model” for the nation on immigration. If elected president, he said, he would immediately drop the lawsuits that the Obama administration has filed “against Arizona and other states that are trying to do the job Barack Obama isn’t doing.” That was then. This is now.

(Reuters) - The Supreme Court was deep into arguments over Arizona's new immigration law on Wednesday when the high court's first Hispanic justice focused on how difficult it could be for police officers to determine whether someone they stop is in the United States legally. "What information does your (federal) system have?" Justice Sonia Sotomayor asked U.S. Solicitor General Donald Verrilli as she methodically extracted a core element of the Obama administration's case against the state of Arizona. "How does that database tell you that someone is illegal as opposed to a citizen?" asked Sotomayor, 57, born in the Bronx...
