  • No immigration bounce for President Obama

    The Washington Post ^ | 10 Jul 2012 | Peyton M. Craighill
President Obama’s announcement of his support for relaxed enforcement of immigration laws on the children of illegal immigrants has not provided any lift for him on the issue according to the new Washington Post-ABC News poll. His approval rating on dealing with immigration issues is no better (nor worse) than it was two years ago, and he runs evenly with former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney on who people trust to handle the issue. Fewer than one in five voters — 18 percent — say immigration is an extremely important issue in their vote. In the Post’s key eight toss-up states...

Remember when President Obama stood in the Rose Garden and told the American people of his administration’s new plan to stop the deportation of younger illegal immigrants if they met certain criteria? Remember when he promised the policy change isn’t amnesty?     Over to you, Washington Times: Federal immigration authorities have begun granting tentative legal status to illegal immigrants under President Obama’s deportation halt — and in some cases are even ignoring the administration’s eligibility rules to stop deportations for those who shouldn’t qualify, according to the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.   Rep. Lamar Smith, Texas Republican,...

At a private meeting with a group of influential supporters including Rupert Murdoch, Mitt Romney said he wasn’t going to flip-flop from his past positions on immigration, according to Politico: Murdoch chimed in, three sources said, telling the candidate on the issue of immigration generally, “You have to take the fight to Obama on this.” Romney said the Hispanic vote is important, noting he has Sen. Marco Rubio on the trail for him and that one of his own sons speaks Spanish, but indicated he is not going to change positions from some of what he said in the primaries....

Testy tyrant President Oblameless got to give a dress rehearsal of his The American President speech this afternoon in the Rose Garden. It’s not the first time we’ve seen it. After wiping his @$$ on the Constitution in front of the White House Stenography Pool, one brave reporter had the temerity to ask him a question in a stunning breach of lickspittle subservience etiquette that was adopted and strictly enforced immediately following the Peeved Prez’s Immaculation. Apparently asking a question is now considered “heckling”. It’s also very unpatriotic to yell out a question to the President before he can make...
  • Indiana sends Congress tab for illegal immigration

    07/01/2012 6:34:25 AM PDT · by Oldeconomybuyer · 19 replies
Indiana's budget director calculates illegal immigrants have cost Indiana $130.9 million. Budget Director Adam Horst sent Congress a bill for the amount Friday as required under Indiana's illegal immigration law passed last year by the General Assembly. Congress is not expected to act on the request, however. Indiana's law was modeled on the 2010 Arizona illegal immigration bill whose key provisions were struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday. Horst estimated $110.6 million of the state's illegal immigrant costs have been for K-12 education. He estimated prison costs at $12.3 million and welfare costs at nearly $8 million.

For three blissful days earlier this month, Raquel, a housekeeper living in Lynn, thought President Obama’s recent announcement on immigration would solve all her problems. Raquel was 4 when her parents brought her to the United States from Mexico; she has lived in America, undocumented, for more than a quarter-century. But in the office of her immigration attorney, Jeffrey B. Rubin, Raquel’s hopes were dashed: She had turned 31 at the end of April. The presidential measure applies only to those under the age of 30 who came to this country when they were 16 or younger. She missed eligibility...

PHOENIX (AP) — Some leaders in Arizona's homebuilding industry are concerned about a potential labor shortage following the Supreme Court's decision to uphold part of the state's controversial immigration law known as SB1070. The bill's passage two years ago led thousands of illegal immigrants to pack up and leave. That was when the housing market had crashed, but now the market is recovering. The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the provision in the law that allows police to try to determine the immigration status of people they stop or arrest if they have a reasonable suspicion that they're in the...

So now, it is the federal government that picks and chooses the laws that shall be enforced, and unwarranted privilege is given to the illegal alien criminal to sidestep the law, but all citizens should be wary of crossing the line and daring to pursue their U.S. Constitutional justice. When the lawless decide the laws and the law abiding citizens become the victims of this presidential imposed lawlessness now unleashed upon the nation, every citizen must stand for regaining justice for the citizen, the family and for each and every American. Justice Scalia is quite clear where he stands on...

The Supreme Court’s decision, announced Monday, in Arizona v. United States opens the way for sensible reform of our immigration laws.Barack Obama and his administration have taken heart that the court overturned Arizona’s state penalties for illegal immigrants. The idea is that states can’t pile higher penalties on top of those voted by Congress, just as states can’t deport people whom Congress allowed into the country. But the much more significant part of the case was the unanimous 8–0 (Justice Kagan not voting) ruling upholding the Arizona provision authorizing state and local law-enforcement personnel to help enforce federal law by...

U.S. authorities converged on a ship from India believed to have numerous stowaways from Pakistan in a container buried in the stacks of cargo aboard. As the ship docked at Port Newark in New Jersey after more than two weeks at sea, emergency medical teams, police and federal law enforcement stood by as customs officials checked each container and port equipment operators raced to dig out the one container where knocking believed to come from stowaways was heard. But by mid-morning no stowaways had been found in at least three containers that had been a focus of the search.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer angrily denounced the Obama administration’s decision Monday to strip the state’s police agencies of special immigration arrest powers, saying it was like telling the state to “drop dead” in the aftermath of the Supreme Court decision upholding a key provision of Arizona’s immigration law. “I was shocked. I was outraged. I thought, you know, this is politics at its best,” Brewer told Fox News’s Greta Van Susteren in an interview Monday night. “It’s just unconscionable. What they said to Arizona is: ‘Drop dead, Arizona, drop dead, and go away. We’re going to ignore you,’” the Republican...

Arizona Senator Jon Kyl stated his belief that “impeachment is always a possibility” regarding President Barack Obama’s recent immigration policy shift, during an appearance Tuesday on the Bill Bennett radio show. “If the president insists on continuing to ignore parts of the law that he doesn’t like, and simply not enforce that law, the primary remedy for that is political,” said Mr. Kyl. “And you have it two ways: one is oversight through the Congress to demonstrate what they’re doing wrong and there are some potential criminal charges there for dereliction of duty. Although, I haven’t looked that up yet....

PPP, a democrat-leaning polling firm, is out today with a new poll of Ohio, a critical battleground this Fall. The top-line number getting the most attention is Obama's erosion of support over the past month. A month ago, Obama led Romney by 7. Today's poll shows the lead has fallen to just 3 and Obama remains below the important 50% threshold. Perhaps more interesting in today's poll, though, is the sharp drop-off in Obama's support among white Democrats.

There’s a lot of talk today about the Supreme Court ruling, and I’ve seen some good analysis here. However, there are many provisions in SB 1070 that went into effect two years ago that should not be ignored, and, hopefully, are being picked up in other states. Only 4 parts of the law were enjoined. The rest was left standing, and because it DID have a severability clause, the rest of the law remains untouched. There’s a great analysis of the enjoined sections and, as Governor Brewer pointed out, the law is only a few pages long and is easy...

I think this might serve as basis for a counter-suit. The Obama administration said Monday it is suspending existing agreements with Arizona police over enforcement of federal immigration laws, and said it has issued a directive telling federal authorities to decline many of the calls reporting illegal immigrants that the Homeland Security Department may get from Arizona police. There will be an increased number of calls from Arizona police, checking on immigration status-- and Obama refuses to budge the number of personnel handling such calls. In most cases, they simply won't even return the call (or pick up the...

President Barack Obama's recent decision to grant immunity to young undocumented Latinos proves that he does not want the public involved in the immigration debate. After failing to secure meaningful reform, the president took the extraordinary step in circumventing Congress and issued an executive order deferring deportation laws calling it the "right thing to do." Though only Congress has the authority under the Constitution to define citizenship, the president -- sensing political disaster in November -- usurped congressional power to enact his own agenda. While Latinos applaud this move, they should worry that the President's expansion of executive power sets...

(AP) — President Barack Obama is basking in the aftermath of his breakthrough directive on illegal immigration and pressing his jobs agenda before a meeting of Hispanic leaders, one day after they gave a cool reception to GOP presidential challenger Mitt Romney and his newly softened stance on immigration. The president was to speak to the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials on Friday near Orlando, his first speech to a Hispanic group since he decreed that many young illegal immigrants brought to the United States as children would be exempted from deportation and granted work permits valid...

“With respect to the notion that I can just suspend deportations [of immigrants brought here illegally as children] through executive order, that’s just not the case, because there are laws on the books that Congress has passed.” — President Obama, March 28, 2011 Those laws remain on the books. They have not changed. Yet Obama last week suspended these very deportations — granting infinitely renewable “deferred action” with attendant work permits — thereby unilaterally rewriting the law. And doing precisely what he himself admits he is barred from doing. Obama had tried to change the law. In late 2010, he...
