Summary: It’s actually cheaper to go to another planet than to give an iPad to every child. This month, Apple dropped a bombshell on the academic community by introducing iBooks Textbooks and iBooks Author. In combination, the two create a compelling framework for re-engineering the textbook in electronic form for K-12 students, permitting for rich color educational content and possibly an entirely new textbook ecosystem that could be made accessible to tens of millions of schoolchildren. The problems with Apple’s daring textbook plan are twofold. First, in that the iPad as a hardware platform is completely unsuitable to the needs...

Future Shop and Best Buy Canada have launched an investigation after news broke out that over 10 fake Apple iPad 2 tablets were sold to unsuspecting customers at stores located in Vancouver. Apparently, scam artists had purchased real Apple iPad 2s from the retailer and then successfully managed to return resealed iPad 2 packages. Only, the returned packages did not include an actual iPad 2 and included charger, but rather clay models that were made to replicate the weight and shape of the real thing. Since the returns were brought back in resealed boxes, the retailer placed the items back...

As many as 10 fake iPad 2s, all made of slabs of modeling clay, were recently sold at electronic stores in Vancouver, British Columbia. Best Buy and Future Shop have launched investigations into how the scam was pulled off. The tablet computers, like most Apple products, are known for their sleek and simple designs. But there's no mistaking the iPad for one of the world's oldest "tablet devices." Still, most electronic products cannot be returned to stores. For the the stores and customers to be fooled by the clay replacements, the thieves must have successfully weighed out the clay portions...

The iPad 3 release date will be this quarter, according to sources at CES 2012, who also blabbed about its specs and features. There seem to be few external changes, so, in IT Blogwatch, bloggers wonder if it'll be called the iPad 2S.

James Royal of the Malibu/Lost Hills sheriff’s station says the man confronted the intruder and chased him a short distance before losing sight of him. The burglar made off with an Apple iPad. “Later that morning, the victim called the station and told the deputies his iPad...

Apple, Samsung Dispute Likely To Turn On 1994 Knight-Ridder Tablet Jeff Roberts A leading design patent expert predicts that Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) will be unable to stop Samsung from selling its Galaxy tablet in the United States in the near future, and says the press has misunderstood a dramatic moment in the patent trial taking place between the tech giants. Court filings unsealed this week in California suggest he is right. Recall that, in October, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh waved two tablets in the air and asked Samsung’s attorney if he could tell which was the Galaxy and which...

One of the top complaints about wealth distributions holds that the vast majority of the people of the country are excluded from the vast majority of its wealth. Considering the "plight" of all of those 20-somethings at the various occupiers, one could be deluded into believing the truth of the 99% mantra. But what if that wasn't true? Considering there are many branches of the group, let's take a look at its main one, occupying near Wall Street, in New York. Seeing how the occupiers are using other people's food and bathrooms and some living in tents (with others still...

Steve Jobs is dead. A tech genius has passed on. Sad. Certainly a devastating loss to Steve Jobs' close friends and family members, as well as to Apple executives and shareholders. The rest of you? Calm down. Among my Facebook friends yesterday, more than one wrote publicly that they were "crying" or "can't stop crying" or "teared up" due to Steve Jobs' death. Really now. You can't stop crying, now that you've heard that a middle-aged CEO has passed, after a long battle with cancer? If humans were always so empathetic, well, that would be understandable. But this type of...

The company's new Kindle Fire tablet, a 7-inch touch-screen device powered by Amazon's content ecosystem and priced at just $199, may be an orange to Apple's iPad apple, but I'd argue that it's an iPad killer all the same. On paper, the Kindle Fire has half the features of the iPad. In fact, it's almost literally half the features--here's a handy comparison chart so you can see for yourself. There's no camera, front or rear; the 8GB of onboard storage is half the amount of the base-model iPad; the Fire has no cellular options, no built-in GPS, and no Bluetooth,...

A South Carolina woman told police she was scammed into buying an Apple iPad made of wood by two men in a McDonald's parking lot. According to a police report obtained by the Smoking Gun, 22-year-old Ashley Mcdowell claimed she was buying food at the restaurant when the men approached her. They claimed to have bought iPads in bulk and were selling them for $300. Retail price for the gadgets normally begins at $499. Mcdowell told the men she only had $180 and they went for the deal, and she was given a FedEx box with the assumed iPad inside....

TAMPA — Every year on every NFL team, the Turk nervously ambles next to players in the locker room, dorm room or cafeteria, his role a designated dream killer whose only job is to signal the death knell to somebody's career. He delivers two messages: The coach wants to see you, and bring your playbook. Well, never again in Tampa Bay. Instead, he'll ask them to bring their iPad. That's because rather than producing thick periodicals the size of the Yellow Pages, the Bucs have downloaded their playbooks on iPad 2s and distributed them to each of their 90 players....

FRUIT THEMED FIRM Apple's arguments that Samsung stole the tablet design from it have been debunked by the latter's lawyers, who found the devices in Stanley Kubrick's classic science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey. The Apple versus Samsung tablet argument is keeping patent lawyers in sports cars and tailored suits at the moment and stopping judges from going on their summer breaks. Apple has argued that Samsung is aping its design and is fighting for a ban on imports, but Samsung has argued that you can see the design in 2001, a film that ironically starts with a bunch...

On the one hand, the tech industry is awash in patent trolls, companies that own generally spurious patents for technologies they didn't really invent, which exist solely to sue other companies into licensing said technologies. On the other, we have tech companies that have patents for technologies that they did, in fact, invent (or at least purchase legitimately) and, as important, use in actual products. These companies, too, must sue others to protect their patents, but for far more legitimate reasons. Google is upset about the latter kind of company, and it's citing two heavy-hitters, Apple and Microsoft, as example...

Good morning. My wife just got an iPad and as I am using it, I think it would be a wonderful tool for an uncle who has had a stroke. He is unable to speak well, but his mind is clear and I can see in his eyes the frustration of not being able to get his point across. Does anyone know of a decent text/icon to speech software product that we might be able to get. If it works well, I am sure it will add a quality to his life that has been missing for a while.
