Authorities initially thought Wanda was dead. “I wouldn’t have wagered a nickel for her life that morning,” Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellinger said Friday, according to WCHS. “She was in that bad of shape. Quite honestly, she was unconscious, circling the drain medically. Massive, massive amounts of head trauma, consistent with some sort of machete or hatchet-type injury.” The case was immediately a mystery. “I had my windows open in my home, and we never heard one thing,” Eileen told WTAP at the time. Mellinger said Friday they originally had little in the way of evidence. They still did not...

A man was walking his dog when he discovered nearly decomposed human remains on a hiking trail in Oregon, police said. The man reported finding the remains in the evening of Monday, Jan. 10, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said. The report prompted an investigation that began the next morning with several search teams and human remains detection dogs. The dog walker found “skeletonized remains,” meaning the body had likely been in the wilderness long enough for the remains to decompose and begin to reveal the skeleton, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said.

There was a time earlier this summer when April Rivera and the staff at the drive-through Covid testing site in southern Oregon where she worked had considered closing their doors because demand was so low. Now, hundreds of patients are lining up at the Asante Rogue regional medical center’s testing site in Medford every day, filling the temporary drive-through in a strip mall parking lot. Even the national guard has been called in to help. Some patients are arriving so sick they have been taken away in ambulances while still in line.... ...Last month, cases in the Medford area in...

One of the things people start thinking about once they’ve become mature and individual adults is how to get their life together on top of all of the worldly things like getting and maintaining a job, creating a family, and whatnot. Among the many things in this list is also one of the biggest decisions you’ll ever make in your life, and that is getting a flat or a house. After all, once you commit to it, it’s something you’re gonna have to live with for anywhere between 5 and 40 years. But if you’re gonna commit that much, why...

Deep in the mountains of Jackson County, just outside Sylva, North Carolina, sets a large, baffling stone. It is a soapstone boulder, and it's covered with a plethora of strange drawings that some archaeologists believe may be 2,000 to 3,000 years old. Even the Cherokee Indians consider the site ancient, pre-dating their presence in the area... According to Cherokee legend, the markings on the rock were created by Judaculla, a slant-eyed giant who dominated the mountains in years long past. He was the "Great Lord of the hunt," a powerful being who could leap from one mountain to another, and...

"It's one of the few issues that's considered fatal in campaign filing," said Jackson County Clerk Larry Reinhardt. "In essence the law says if these are not permanently bound the candidates will not be allowed on the ballot." That is why four republican candidates won't be on the ballot in November. The Jackson County Electoral Board said paper clips on the candidates' filing papers weren't permanent enough.

U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver's car wash headache is raging once again. The bank that loaned the Kansas City congressman and his wife $1.3 million in 2002 to buy the Grandview Auto Wash at 12204 Blue Ridge Extension is now demanding payment of more than $1.5 million, after the Cleavers repeatedly fell behind on repaying the loan. The suit, filed last week in Jackson County Circuit Court, said the demand for repayment came after three attempts to delay foreclosure. Bank of America also is seeking attorney’s fees and a receiver to protect collateral. “The Cleaver Company failed and refused, and continues...

Jackson County Commissioners decided in a 4-1 vote Monday night to put up a Ten Commandments display in the Jackson County Administrative Building. Commissioner Stacey Britt proposed the display as a means of supporting the Barrow County Commission, currently embroiled in a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union claiming that a Ten Commandments display within the Barrow County Courthouse is unconstitutional. But the Jackson County display will have a significant difference from the Barrow County display. While the Ten Commandments are displayed solo in a breezeway within the Barrow County Courthouse, the Jackson County display will hang alongside...
