    06/06/2015 5:59:06 PM PDT · by Perdogg · 27 replies
With a voice that sounded as if it was preserved in oak and dark good looks straight out of a Bronte novel, it’s a surprise that Richard Johnson (who died today) never became an A-list film star. However, the career which he carved out on stage and screen was probably far more interesting – and durable – than a life at the mercy of a big studio would have allowed. Certainly his bid for the big time was thwarted early on. MGM, who had been impressed with his performance in Never So Few (1959), signed him to a multi-million pound...

M aster spy James Bond, one of pop culture’s most iconic figures, is now available for dangerous assignments from Canadian writers, thanks to a copyright quirk that allows the writing and publication in Canada of original material based on Bond creator Ian Fleming’s work. As of Jan. 1, the original writings of Fleming, a former British naval intelligence agent who published 12 novels and nine stories featuring 007 between 1952 and 1966, have entered the public domain. That’s because Canada’s view of copyright is that it extends for 50 years after the death of a writer.

Thursday’s big announcement for the 24th James Bond movie — Spectre, to be directed by Skyfall’s Sam Mendes, and once again featuring Daniel Craig as the British super spy — sadly lacked details of the most important element of any Bond movie. No, not the Bond girl. The Bond theme. From Dr. No on, each Bond movie has had a distinctive theme that attempts to set the stage for what’s to come. At their best, the songs are as dramatic and exciting as the movies themselves, but… well, let’s just say that not every song is at its best and leave...

But next year's film, Spectre, features something rarely seen in the Bond world: an age-appropriate co-star. The so-called "Bond girl," in this film, is Monica Bellucci, age 50. For a franchise that has been built on the idea that Britain's most famous spy has no qualms about romantic entanglements with a teenager (Aliza Gur was a teenager while filming "From Russia With Love"), it's a step forward.

The reason is simple – it doesn't contain a laser that can actually burn stuff. If that's what you're looking for in a smartwatch, forget about Apple and look towards the work of hobbyist Patrick Priebe.
