Police say extra officers will be on patrol from July 22 to July 25 during various hours of the day and night. It allegedly started with her jogging in her toe shoes and sporting headphones. It ended in video of her screaming and being led away in handcuffs. What happened in between is a matter of debate, but video showing parts of the incident is certainly gaining traction online. Whatever the woman did to get the attention of Austin, Texas police, a witness’ video of cops detaining her on a city sidewalk Thursday morning then escorting her to a nearby squad car indicate she was not happy with their actions.(snip) Student Chris Quintero, who the Daily Texan reported witnessed the arrest, said...

Now he’s jaywalking! Mayor de Blasio and his security detail crossed a Brooklyn street against the light Friday on his way to his morning workout – just a day after his SUV blew through two stop signs and was speeding in Queens. Exclusive video taken by The Post caught the mayor — dressed in a “Brooklyn” sweatshirt, slacks and sneakers — chatting on his cellphone as he sauntered across 11th Street on 6th Avenue in Park Slope, ignoring the orange hand on the traffic signal that clearly warns pedestrians not to cross. In January, NYPD precincts launched an aggressive jaywalking...

“We can have police efforts focused on pedestrian safety without violating the civil rights of our citizens,” said Wong’s lawyer, Sanford Rubenstein, who will file a notice of the lawsuit on Monday, naming the city, NYPD and unidentified officers as defendants. Wong maintains the traffic signal was green when he stepped off the curb at the southeast corner of 96th St. and Broadway to cross, but it may have turned red by the time the octogenarian reached the other side, where an unidentified cop stopped him and demanded to see his identification. Wong speaks only Cantonese and Spanish, but understood...

LOS ANGELES — In a city of seemingly endless highways — with its daily parade of car accidents, frustrating traffic jams and aggressive drivers — the Los Angeles Police Department these days is training its sights on a different road menace: jaywalkers. It is not quite “Dragnet,” but the Police Department in recent weeks has issued dozens of tickets to workers, shoppers and tourists for illegally crossing the street in downtown Los Angeles. And the crackdown is raising questions about whether the authorities are taking sides with the long-dominant automobile here at the very time when a pedestrian culture is...

Why In A Town That's Only 16% Black, African-Americans Account For 91% Of Jaywalking Arrests Rebecca J. Rosen August 27, 2012, 12:46 PM I once heard it said that every successful Freedom of Information Act request is a failure of open government. In other words, every time activists, journalists, or other citizens are able to get data or other records through a FOIA request, that information should have already been available, somehow, somewhere on the Internet, without the hassle of a request process. The thinking is that FOIA is an antiquated system, designed for a time when the government did...

SAN ANTONIO -- A 26-year-old man has been arrested almost a month after ripping up a jaywalking citation and running from police. Danton Smith allegedly refused to use the crosswalk on Nov. 7 in the 4800 block of Goldfield. Police said they told him to walk through the lines, but that he ignored their request and crossed the street about 30 feet outside the crosswalk. Smith was issued a citation, which police said he ripped up and tossed it into the air. Police said they drove towards the suspect, asking him to stop. Two patrol cars followed the jaywalking suspect...

The White House hit back Wednesday against New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's contention that President Obama has been a "bystander" to the nation's problems. "There were no bystanders in the Oval Office," presidential press secretary Jay Carney said. "In the past two and a half years that Barack Obama has been president, it has been one of the most substantial periods in our history." Mr. Carney went on to cite the "enormity" of the challenges that faced Mr. Obama when he took office, including a deep recession and global financial crisis. He said Mr. Obama made "a series of incredibly...

Washington (CNSNews.com) - Cecilia Munoz, the White House director of intergovernmental affairs, compared the federal crime of being in the country illegally to jaywalking."If you were running the police department of any urban area in this country, you would spend more resources going after serious criminals than after jaywalkers. DHS (the Department of Homeland Security) is doing the immigration equivalent of the same thing," Munoz told the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) conference on Monday.

White House press secretary Jay Carney was asked by ABC's Jake Tapper to give a response to Teamsters President James Hoffa's controversial comment at yesterday's union rally in Detroit, Michigan in which President Obama also attended. Tapper asked for the White House's reaction in light of President Obama calling for civility in political rhetoric after the attempted assassination of Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. "First of all, those weren't comments by the president," Carney told Tapper. "The President wasn't there. I mean, he wasn't on stage. He didn't speak for another twenty minutes. He didn't hear it." "Mr. Hoffa speaks for himself....

White House press secretary Jay Carney on Tuesday took a shot House Republican Majority Leader Eric Cantor for insisting disaster aid for Hurricane Irene should be offset with other spending cuts. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Carney said the federal government’s priority should be to respond to the disaster. He also noted that Cantor (R-Va.) hadn’t demanded offsets when the Bush administration rang up “unprecedented bills.” “I guess I can’t help but say that I wish that commitment to looking for offsets had been held by the House majority leader and others, say, during the previous administration when...

(CNSNews.com) - When asked questions about the president’s upcoming speech on jobs and economic growth yesterday, White House Spokesperson Jay Carney claimed that only the most ‘fervent partisan’ would suggest the 8 million plus jobs lost in this recession were lost because of actions Barack Obama took. The question was asked by CBS reporter Norah O'Donnell. The exchange appears in the official White House transcript of the press briefing: Q -- Jay, the question is what is different in this new speech? What is going to be different? MR. CARNEY: Well, you will see what the President proposes to enhance...

Short term unemployment benefits provide people financial resources while the look for a new job. Extending unemployment benefits to 18 months or longer only encourages people to take their time looking for that new job. They do not create jobs. This is the liberal concept that spending money can be equated with job creation. If that theory worked, the Stimulus would have kept unemployment under 8% as promised. We all know how that worked out. (RCP) — “I understand why extending unemployment insurance provides relief to people who need it, but how does that create jobs,” Wall Street Journal’s Laura...
