  • Bill O’Reilly Thrives at Fox News, Even as Harassment Settlements Add Up

    NYT ^ | APRIL 1, 2017 | EMILY STEEL and MICHAEL S. SCHMIDT
An investigation by The New York Times has found a total of five women who have received payouts from either Mr. O’Reilly or the company in exchange for agreeing to not pursue litigation or speak about their accusations against him. The agreements totaled about $13 million. Two settlements came after the network’s former chairman, Roger Ailes, was dismissed last summer in the wake of a sexual harassment scandal, when the company said it did not tolerate behavior that “disrespects women or contributes to an uncomfortable work environment.”

Boris Johnson has won a Ł1,000 prize for a rude poem about the Turkish president having sex with a goat. “If somebody wants to make a joke about the love that flowers between the Turkish president and a goat, he should be able to do so, in any European country, including Turkey,” Johnson told interviewer Nicholas Farrell, who then challenged him to enter the Spectator’s poetry prize.
  • John Kasich: I'd consider nominating Merrick Garland to Supreme Court

Ohio governor and Republican presidential candidate John Kasich gently criticized Senate Republicans' approach to President Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court, suggesting lawmakers should at least meet with the nominee, and even saying he'd consider nominating Garland himself, as president. "I never thought the president should send it because I knew nothing was going to happen," Kasich told "Face the Nation" in an interview taped for Sunday's broadcast. "Frankly," he added, "they probably ought to all sit down and meet with the guy." Senate Republican leaders have adamantly refused to consider the nomination of Garland, who's currently...

GOP presidential candidate Ted Cruz tells The Brody File that the reason Donald Trump is performing well in the GOP race for president is because his voters are uninformed and not engaged in the process. “Donald does well with voters who have relatively low information, who are not that engaged and who are angry and they see him as an angry voice.

With the bromance between Ted Cruz and Donald Trump over, the mogul turned GOP front-runner has begun trash talking the senator from Texas. "He's a nasty guy," Trump recently huffed. "Nobody likes him. Nobody in Congress likes him. Nobody likes him anywhere once they get to know him." For members of the politerati, this was no revelation. As Cruz has quickly climbed the political ladder, he has left a long line of associates who complain, without much prompting, that he is an insufferable schmuck. A prominent aide to George W. Bush's 2000 campaign could barely contain himself when we asked...

For Donald Trump, in some ways, Ted Cruz "looks like a jerk." The heated personal rhetoric directed by Trump at Cruz cranked up another few degrees on Tuesday morning, with the Manhattan business mogul unloading on his Republican rival in back-to-back morning show interviews. ... "He's a liar," Trump said of Cruz, adding, "that's why nobody likes him ... "He looks like a jerk, he's standing all by himself. ... Co-host Mika Brzezinski interrupted, asking Trump if he was actually comparing Cruz to President Barack Obama. "Well, they're the same. I think actually, Ted is more strident than Obama, if...

Oh yeah? Well, your mama wears army boots! I’m so glad that our politics reflects our national maturity and perspicacity … Former Gov. Jeb Bush (R-Fla.) says that Donald Trump is “a jerk” for his past remarks toward the disabled in a new online ad released Thursday. “I’ve got to get this off my chest — Donald Trump is a jerk,” the GOP presidential candidate said in the spot titled “Enough.”

Radio host Glenn Beck said Tuesday that Donald Trump acts like the radical community organizer Saul Alinsky. "He is Saul Alinsky," Beck insisted of the GOP presidential front-runner on his radio broadcast. "[Trump] will isolate you and polarize you and he will take you out," Beck said. "He will destroy you. "He is spending money with Tea Party groups and churches and news websites to own them," the conservative pundit added. Alinsky's "Rules for Radicals" has inspired controversy over its principles on income inequality, politics and social justice. Beck argued that the Republican establishment threatens Trump's lead in the polls...

On Sunday, Donald Trump re-tweeted an attack ad on “little ‘RUBE'” Marco Rubio that was, to put it mildly, in bad taste: “NEVER HIRE A BOY TO DO A MAN’S JOB” is the title, which floats above an image of an angelic-looking young child who is, presumably, Marco Rubio. He “seems like a nice boy,” the ad claims. “Well mannered but bought and paid for” by establishment Republican interests who “taught him all that fancy government stuff. ‘RINO RUBE’ repeats it well! Good boy!” Supporting the infantalizing of one of his opponents might seem unpresidential, but this is Donald Trump,...

Arizona Sen. John McCain is expecting a low voter turnout in next month's midterm elections because he says voters are skeptical of both the Obama administration and the Republican Party. “What I’m hearing from my pollster friends is that people don’t like Republicans and they don’t like Obama," McCain said in an interview on Pivot's "TakePart Live," a show co-hosted by his daughter, Meghan McCain. Piers Morgan blames Anderson Cooper's show for Morgan’s awful talk series being canceled by CNN. "Could I have done with a better lead-in? Yes." Morgan tells Politico. "Anderson is a great field reporter, but does he drive big ratings at CNN, outside of a big news cycle? I don't see any evidence of it. And yet the whole bank was being bet on him at 8 and 10 o'clock." Morgan also throws his old CNN boss Jeff Zucker under the bus and pleads with Rupert Murdoch to give him a job. One tells the story of a time Stewart screamed in a producer's face and threw a newspaper at her, only to later apologize and explain, "Sorry, that's bad Jon. ... I try not to let him out." There are more such tales of Stewart's angry side in the book, Forbes reports, and Rogak notes, "I'm surprised that...
