A Jewish family finally succeeds in moving into one room of a house owned by Jews but occupied by Arabs in the Silwan Valley. Seven years after a court ruling that supported Jewish ownership, police escorted the family into their room separated by barbed wire and sheets of metal from the rest of the building, the Bethlehem-based Ma'an news agency reported Monday. The Arab Hamdallah family still is resisting orders to leave the entire house, which was bought by an orthodox Jewish group more than a century ago and was re-sold in 1990 when U.S. philanthropist Irvin Moskowitz bought the...

One simply has to watch the words of the leaders in the Middle East to understand why there won’t be peace anytime soon. “Jerusalem is a Muslim and Christian city, and there will be neither peace nor security until the Israeli occupation, settlements, and settlers leave the city,” Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Tuesday. “Jerusalem’s identity is Arab, and the city’s and Christian holy sites must be protected from Israeli threats.” He added that Israeli excavation work in Jerusalem and in the Western Wall tunnels beneath the mosque “will not undermine the fact that the city will forever be...

According to eyewitness, a police patrolman who arrived at the scene saw a group of youths engaging in disorderly behavior, but left minutes before they began beating the Arab victim • PM: "This goes against our way, and we condemn it in word and deed." Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday condemned attacks against Arabs over the weekend, saying that Israel will not tolerate racism and violence. Six Palestinians were hurt on Thursday when the taxi they were riding in was firebombed near the West Bank settlement of Bat Ayin, and a group of Arab youths was viciously attacked in...

I can only hope that this means that we have solved the shortage (somehow I doubt it), but Paula Stern reports that she got gas masks in Jerusalem. This is significant because there really has been no distribution in and around Jerusalem until now (although we had our gas masks collected a number of years ago). The only reason we have gas masks already is that Mrs. Carl works in the center of the country and got them there. This comment from Paula is a great summary of what's so bizarre about this situation: This was more than I had...

The 10th Annual Jerusalem Gay Pride Parade took place on Thursday in the biblical holy city, and attracted plenty of controversy, with protesters rallying against the event's purported harm to Jerusalem's "sanctity." More than 5,000 gays and lesbians and their supporters gathered in Jerusalem for the parade, the Times of Israel reported. They assembled in the downtown Independence Park before starting their march through the city. "We must work together to strengthen Jerusalem as a modern, open capital and to foster welcoming, inclusive communities across the Jewish world," said American philanthropist Lynn Schusterman, who made the opening remarks. "It is...
  • Israel: Obama's Wedge Issue

Less than 100 days before the US presidential elections, the Obama administration is openly denying Israel's sovereignty over Jerusalem. Can this be a vote-getter? Last week, the Emergency Committee for Israel released an ad titled, "O, Jerusalem." The commercial showed administration officials squirming when asked to name the capital of Israel, and highlighted the recent refusals of White House and State Department spokespeople to acknowledge that Jerusalem is Israel's capital city. The underlying message of the ad was that the administration's policy is out of step with the views of the majority of Americans. Barack Obama's position is certainly...

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness …Charles Dickens, “A Tale of Two Cities”Unlike the classic Dickens work, this week's presidential campaign was a tale of one city Jerusalem, and the different way it was handled by the two different campaigns, One handled it as if this was the age of foolishness, the other as the age of wisdom. One refused to give its position on Israel’s capital publicly; the other stood in front of the panorama of the holy city over his...

Former Knesset Member Geula Cohen believes that annexing Judea and Samaria is possible, if Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu wills it. Based on her experience, however, she noted that the law can be proposed by an MK and not by Netanyahu himself. Cohen, a former underground fighter who formed the Tehiya party in 1979, initiated the Jerusalem Basic Law that declared "the complete and unified" Jerusalem to be Israel's capital, in 1980. "It was difficult to think, then, that the Jerusalem Law could pass," Cohen recollected. "[Israeli Prime Minister Menachem] Begin and [Egyptian President Anwar] Sadat had an agreement that such...

His target—a large and convenient one—was Barack Obama’s record of behavior toward the Jewish state.Even so, there’s no possibility that Romney will get most of the Jewish vote in November, something no Republican presidential candidate has ever done. But a Gallup poll released Friday has American Jewish...

[Edited for excerpt] Israel's economic success compared to its Palestinian neighbours was due in part to "the hand of providence", Mitt Romney told a $25,000-a-head fundraising event in Jerusalem on Monday. He cited a climate of innovation, the Jewish history of thriving in adversity and the "hand of providence". Romney drew a comparison between Israel's economic success and the Palestinians'. "As you come here and you see the GDP per capita, for instance, in Israel which is about $21,000 dollars, and compare that with the GDP per capita just across the areas managed by the Palestinian Authority, which is more...

The following is the transcript of a brilliant and inspiring speech by Mitt Romney from Jerusalem's Old City. I see only one word missing..."Palestinians," although they and the evil they perpetrate is clear. He reiterates that Jerusalem is the Capital City of Israel; that our ideals and values are much the same; that America will not stand by and watch horror played out again; that true peacemakers never allow despotic regimes to spread their hate to free peoples; that we have a solemn duty to believe Iran when they tell us they will destroy Israel [and the U.S.]; that the...

By most accounts, Mitt Romney hit it out of the park yesterday in his speech before the Jerusalem Foundation. Daniel Pipes called it "a stem winder" and "remarkable." Barry Rubin sensed Romney's sincerity: Speaking to an often-cheering group of about 400 people in Jerusalem, Governor Mitt Romney gave a speech less notable for what he said than for the fact that the audience believed he was sincere in saying it. At a beautiful outdoor setting with the Old City in the background, Romney declared his strong support for Israel, using phrases often heard from American presidents. He also proclaimed his...

The thought of Jerusalem being the capital of Israel is so deeply repugnant to the Obama administration that Press Secretary Jay Carney couldn't 'speak' it, wouldn't confirm it - but couldn't ignore it either, because he was asked repeatedly, and heatedly, for the White House position: is Jerusalem still the capital of Israel, or has that position changed? It was HAWT in that press room today (you don't often see a White House presser like this one). All Carney would say is that the White House position has not changed. Today Mitt Romney stated for all the world to hear: "It...

One of the most embarrassing yet telling exchanges (using the term loosely, as will be seen) in the history of presidential press secretaries occurred on Thursday. Connie Lawn, described here as longest-serving White House reporter, asked Obama Press Secretary Jay Carney what should have been a really easy question: "What city does this administration consider to be the capital of Israel -- Jerusalem or Tel Aviv?" Carney wouldn't answer it, and accused Lawn and relentless national treasure Les Kinsolving of of asking about something they already knew. Carney's contemptible behavior has been virtually ignored in the establishment press. Here...

Jews in the Beit Hanina neighborhood of Jerusalem, a hotbed of angry Arabs in one of the areas claimed by the Palestinian Authority, are attacked almost daily by stones and firebombs. Police are passive, according to Jewish residents. Hezi Hovav told Arutz Sheva there have been dozens of Arab attacks, and he has filed complaints without any results. In one recent attack, a firebomb (Molotov cocktail) burned one room of a house. Another firebomb was hurled last Thursday at a car. Hovav also reported that an Arabs used tear gas on a young Jewish man.
