The US secretary of state has said that President Bashar al-Assad has one week to hand over his entire stock of chemical weapons to avoid a military attack, but said he had no expectation that the Syrian leader would comply. The State Department is hitting back at what it calls false accusations that Russian President Vladimir Putin made about Secretary of State John Kerry. Jen Psaki is a department spokeswoman. She says Kerry is a decorated combat veteran of the Vietnam war and has had more than words aimed at him. Psaki says Kerry is not losing sleep because of Putin's quote preposterous comment that was based on an inaccurate rendering of what Kerry said.

I don't care if John F. Kerry threw his medals -- or ribbons -- or ribbons and medals -- over a fence in Washington to protest the Vietnam War 33 years ago. What matters more to me is Kerry's response now to questions about what he did back then. I am not impressed. I watched ABC newsman Charlie Gibson interview Kerry on "Good Morning America" this morning. Ignoring the subject matter -- whether Kerry tossed his ribbons or his medals at a 1971 anti-war protest -- I gathered the following: -- Kerry is a man who speaks before he listens....

Let's see if I can kick this off. During the promo at the beginning of the show, where he was standing by live in West Virginia, and throughout the interview itself, Kerry tried hard to keep this huge "what me worry?" smile plastered on his face. He coupled it with numerous condescending head shakes that seemed to imply "these poor benighted fools who so miserably misunderstand the greatness that is John Kerry."

On Iraq and many other key foreign policy issues -- such as the Israeli- Palestinian dispute -- what's more notable about the 2004 campaign is how much the two men appear to agree. "In effect, the Kerry position is just, 'We're going to do a more efficient job of running Iraq than this administration.'
