  • Two Medieval Jewish Thinkers on the ďImage of GodĒ (Ecumenical)

The concept of the Imago Dei ( ¬ďImage of God¬Ē) has fascinated Jewish thinkers since the time of Philo and Ben Sira. For now, we will focus only on two famous medieval thinkers: Saadia Gaon and Maimonides. Saadia points out in his philosophic classic that ◊Ď÷ľ÷į◊¶÷∂◊ú÷∂◊Ě ◊ź÷Ī◊ú÷Ļ◊Ē÷ī◊ô◊Ě (B¬ítse¬ílem ¬ī√©l√∂h√ģm= ¬ďin the likeness of the Divine image¬Ē) is figurative language for God bestowing special honor unto humankind, which He did not confer unto the rest of Creation. This distinctiveness is visible in humanity¬ís ability to exert dominion over the earth (Gen. 1:26). Among modern scholars, biblical theologian D. Clines clarifies the...

What can they say about Paul? What happens to Jewish Republicans, or to Jews who might consider voting Republican if Ron Paul takes Iowa - not an impossible scenario according to current polling. What happens to the Obama-bad-for-Israel Republican theme if Paul becomes the leading voice of their party - even for a week (until the New Hampshire vote). What chances do GOP Jews have to finally break the unending chain of broken Jewish-shift promises. How can Jewish GOPers withstand the ensuing Democratic attack on the ďisolationistĒ, ďanti foreign aidĒ, ďanti-IsraelĒ party Ė how can they defend a party that...

One popular comedian argues that it must be dreadful to spend eternity in heaven. No matter how wonderful it might be at first, eventually you're bound to get used to it and end up bored to death. By the same reasoning, one would shrug off the torments of hell over time, and the experience would be the same as heaven. Truth told, Dante's account of the saints contemplating the Godhead in the "Paradiso" section of Dante's Divine Comedy always bored me, without having to wait for too much of eternity to tick by.

This week, Jewish children all over the world will gamble for nuts or coins using a specially marked four-sided top, a dreidel. In Yiddish, the four dreidel letters stand for words nearly identical to those used in a similar game once played by German-speaking children. Nun: nichts. Nothing happens. Pass the top to the next player. Shin: shtel. Put one extra token into the pot. Hey: halb. Take half the pot. Gimmel: ganz. All! Win the whole pot. In Hebrew, though, the four dreidel letters aren't just game instructions but an abbreviation particularly appropriate to the Hanukkah celebration. Nes gadol...

As Jewish families gather this week to celebrate the Festival of Lights, Todd and I would like to wish them a very Happy Hanukkah. This beautiful holiday commemorates the story of the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem, following years of struggle by the Maccabees, when one-dayís worth of consecrated oil miraculously lasted for eight. This story never ceases to inspire because it reminds us of the power of faith, hope, and perseverance. The modern State of Israel is the living embodiment of the Hanukkah miracle Ė a country that was not expected to survive the onslaught of its enemies,...

The Vatican is now reiterating demands for control of religious sites in Jerusalem. Jordan's occupation 1948-1967 didn't bother them. ďPeace negotiations in the Middle East must tackle the issue of the status of the holy sites of JerusalemĒ, Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, head of the Vaticanís Council for Interreligious Dialogue, declared several days ago in Rome. It is a convention of biblical scholarship that scripture sometimes presents seemingly contradictory information that forces us to evaluate the misdeeds of extraordinary people in the context of their times and circumstances. To warn us against superficially interpreting Davidís episode with Bathsheba, the Talmud records the oral tradition that, ďAnyone who says that David sinned is in error.Ē1 Even without the Talmudís admonition, it is impossible to reconcile the simple reading of the text with Torah law. There is no end to the conundrums involved in defining what it means to be a Jew. Must a Jew be someone who believes in the Jewish religion, in the way a Christian believes in Christianity or a Muslim in Islam? That can't be the case, since many devoted Jews are atheists. Is a Jew necessarily someone who acknowledges membership in a Jewish ethnic group, people, or nation? That definition would exclude people who believe in Judaism but feel little kinship with other believers, and it would read out Jews who are anti-Zionist. Should "Jewish" be seen as a cultural...

Students at†Sacred Heart College, a Catholic school in the northern city of Chiang Mai, carried red banners adorned with swastikas, wore Nazi uniforms, and gave "Sieg Heil" salutes, while some had swastikas painted on their faces, according to photos released by the U.S.-based†Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish human rights organization.† School officials said that students had organized the parade themselves, and it was not intended to cause offense. AFP reports:"The school officially explained that it was an internal sports day...

Jerusalem (CNN) ‚Äď In a perfect blending of 21st-century advances with the cutting-edge technology of an earlier age, starting this week internet users can, for the first time, use Google search and scanning technology to examine five manuscripts from the Dead Sea Scrolls. Google and the Israel Museum unveiled the project Monday in Jerusalem with the launch of a museum website that allows users to interact with the ancient texts in a way impossible just a few years ago."You have the capability with high-resolution definition to look at the scrolls in a comfortable setting - to enlarge them, to magnify...

In this place, remembrance must also be made of the Kristallnacht that took place from 9 to 10 November 1938. Only a few could see the full extent of this act of contempt for humanity, like the Berlin Cathedral Provost, Bernhard Lichtenberg, who cried out from the pulpit of Saint Hedwigís Cathedral: ďOutside, the Temple is burning Ė that too is the house of GodĒ. The Nazi reign of terror was based on a racist myth, part of which was the rejection of the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of Jesus Christ and of all who believe...

"See I have given before you today life and good and death and bad." (From this week's Torah portion, Netzvim, Deuteronomy 30:15) Don't we know that life is good and death is bad? Not really. Our natural will is to stop living and to merely exist. In other words, to stop working and to just be passive; to shed responsibility. To live, we must preserve a state of separation or differentiation. The world was created in a process that separated light from darkness, heaven from earth and land from water. A living organism lives in the same way: it is...

Ex-Mormon Australia native Helen Radkey is a spiritual consultant and educator, soul reader, past-life therapist, prayer therapist, marriage celebrant, writer and researcher, but is best known as that rabble-rouser whoís been keeping close tabs on the LDS Churchís temple ordinances for the past 18 years. City Weekly caught up with Radkey to find out what she's been keeping tabs on lately. Why do proxy baptisms matter to people who donít believe in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? Alive or dead, people deserve to be treated with respect. Proxy baptism is a disrespectful attempt to reframe a personís...

Big Trouble Meets Small Shofar Monday, September 07, 2009 Posted by Rabbi Infinity What¬ís a nice neshamah like that doing in a nasty place like this? Why does a really nice G‚ÄĎd send a poor innocent neshamah down into the world, knowing full well how messed up she¬ís going to get? She¬ís got a one-in-a-million chance of coming out unscathed. Even if she is successful and manages to do some mitzvahs in the end, look at the collateral damage incurred. I mean, is it really worth it?

According to the Talmud (Sanhedrin 97), Mashiach will arrive before the Jewish year 6000. This means the full range of spectacular prophecies and supernatural events associated with the End of Days must occur within the next 228 years. According to Michah (7:15), our future redemption will resemble the redemption from Egypt. Yalkut Shimoni (2:806) unequivocally states this is what Rabbi Dosa means when he mentions that the period of Mashiach will last 400 years. This corresponds to the Covenant of the Parts, in which Avraham was told his children would be in Egyptian exile for 400 years. According to Maharsha,...

In 2004, the Presbyterian Church (USA) touted solidarity with Palestinians by endorsing a ďphased, selective divestmentĒ from firms doing business with Israel. Church elites had underestimated the negative public response, both from American Jews and from more temperate Presbyterians. After a campaign to revoke divestment, including a feisty luncheon appearance by former CIA Director James Woolsey, the denominationís 2006 General Assembly revoked divestment. But the churchís anti-Israel boll weevils wonít accept ďnoĒ for an answer. A PCUSA so-called Mission Responsibility Through Investment (MRTI) committee is now recommending a new, more selective anti-Israel divestment targeting Hewlett-Packard, Caterpillar, and Motorola. Next yearís...

If the polls are right, the voters in the solidly Democratic New York City district that Anthony Weiner represented until earlier this year are about to elect long-shot Republican businessman Bob Turner to Congress. Of course, this will be read by Republicans as a sign that the Obama administration has lost support even in bluer-than-blue areas (which is partially true) and written off by Democrats as a fluke produced by the highly irregular demographics of New Yorkís Ninth District (also partly true). However, both of those blanket statements mask the true reason that Bob Turner will win this race ó...
