  • Death of Great Toronto rabbi at 99, Can we Expect Rioting and Avengement of Death?

On February 8, 2012 Rabbi W. Gunther Plaut, a famous and notable Toronto rabbi died. He was Senior Rabbi at Toronto's Holy Blossom Synagogue from 1961 to 1977 and remained active as a commentator on the Torah since. He in fact wrote what is now the standard Reform commentary on the Torah, that is in use in most Reform synagogues. This is the link to his obituary. This interview is both stirring and stunning (link to original) from another tribute: ďWe are not a bomb-throwing group,Ē Plaut intoned in that crisp lightly tinged German-Jewish accent, ďbut I want everyone to...

"And you will be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation." (From this week's Torah portion, Yitro, Exodus 19:6) Before the giving of the Torah, before the Ten Commandments, before the most momentous and splendorous ceremony in history, the Creator explains why. Before "Honor your parents", before "Guard the Sabbath day to sanctify it", before all the 'how', G-d explains why He gave us the Torah; why this trek from the House of Bondage to the Land of Israel. What is the destiny? What is the purpose? "And you will be to Me a kingdom of priests...

Though the victims were mostly Jews, the Holocaust has affected all humanity. Not only were non-Jews, notably the Roma, also murdered by the Nazis, but the fact that the crimes were committed in civilized Europe has shaken the very foundations of western culture. ..A touching manifestation of this reorientation is a recent report in the British Catholic Herald about a nun who is likely to be canonized by the Vatican. There are many worthy pilgrimage sites all over the world, but none can boast of anything approaching the Church of Ethiopiaís singular claim to fame: the Ark of the Covenant. Ethiopian Christians maintain that the Ark, the portable shrine holding the stone tablets of the original Ten Commandments that were written atop Mount Sinai by the Finger of God, and bearing (according to numerous Old Testament accounts) the Presence and Power of God, was brought to Ethiopia in 950 B.C. ASHKELON, Israel -- Israel is closing the books on a rare millennia-old Jewish tradition. Nearly three decades after Israel began airlifting Ethiopia's ancient Jewish community out of the Horn of Africa, Israel's rabbis are now working to phase out the community's white-turbaned clergy, the kessoch, whose unusual religious practices are at odds with the rabbinate's Orthodox Judaism. The effort has added to the sense of discrimination felt by Israel's 120,000 Ethiopian citizens. These sentiments boiled over this month after a group of landlords in the southern town of Kiryat Malachi refused to accept Ethiopians as tenants. The move has prompted large...

The concept of the Imago Dei ( ¬ďImage of God¬Ē) has fascinated Jewish thinkers since the time of Philo and Ben Sira. For now, we will focus only on two famous medieval thinkers: Saadia Gaon and Maimonides. One popular comedian argues that it must be dreadful to spend eternity in heaven. No matter how wonderful it might be at first, eventually you're bound to get used to it and end up bored to death. By the same reasoning, one would shrug off the torments of hell over time, and the experience would be the same as heaven. There is no end to the conundrums involved in defining what it means to be a Jew. Must a Jew be someone who believes in the Jewish religion, in the way a Christian believes in Christianity or a Muslim in Islam? That can't be the case, since many devoted Jews are atheists. Is a Jew necessarily someone who acknowledges membership in a Jewish ethnic group, people, or nation? That definition would exclude people who believe in Judaism but feel little kinship with other believers, and it would read out Jews who are anti-Zionist. Should "Jewish" be seen as a cultural...

Ted Belman. Medved nails it when he says "The answer is that distinctive religious attitudes among Jews play a greater role in shaping voting behavior than ideology, education levels, income, or any sense of ethnic solidarity.[..] "The voting behavior of American Jews conforms closely to the preferences of the irreligious and the unaffiliated precisely because so many of them are, in fact, theologically unaffiliated. He goes on to say that Jews "cringe" at the thought of a believer in Jesus Christ becoming President. They will never get in bed with Christ believers no matter how much they love and want...

My love for you is unending and in this same manner I AM calling you to "ALL" move together "AS ONE" ! Use "MY" Love for there is ~Grace~ there !!! 1 Corinthians 4 1SO THEN, let us [apostles] be looked upon as ministering servants of Christ and stewards (trustees) of the mysteries (the secret purposes) of God. 2Moreover, it is [essentially] required of stewards that a man should be found faithful [proving himself worthy of trust]. 3But [as for me personally] it matters very little to me that I should be put on trial by you [on this point],...

"And the two angels came to Sodom in the evening and Lot was sitting at the gate of Sodom." (From this week's Torah portion, Vayerah, Genesis 19:1) Hold on a minute! Didn't Lot learn anything from his previous misadventure? Just in last week's Torah portion, Abraham endangered himself and his entire family in a World War to save Lot from captivity after he made his bad decision to move to Sodom. After Abraham redeems him, Lot disregards everything that transpired and goes right back to Sin City as if nothing had happened, at all. In order to understand this psychosis,...

ROME, ITALY, November 4 (CNA/EWTN News) - The Jewish New Yorker who has made it his life's work to clear the name of Pope Pius XII of being anti-Semitic believes the wartime pontiff actually went undercover to save the lives of Jews in Rome. Gary Krupp came across the evidence in a letter from a Jewish woman whose family was rescued thanks to direct Vatican intervention. "It is an unusual letter, written by a woman who is alive today in northern Italy, who said she was with her mother, her uncle, and a few other relatives in an audience with...

Details, from a Jewish paper in Israel: Ultra-Orthodox young men curse and spit at Christian clergymen in the streets of Jerusalemís Old City as a matter of routine. In most cases the clergymen ignore the attacks, but sometimes they strike back. Last week the Jerusalem Magistrateís Court quashed the indictment against an Armenian priesthood student who had punched the man who spat at him. Johannes Martarsian was walking in the Old City in May 2008 when an young ultra-Orthodox Jew spat at him. Maratersian punched the spitter in the face, making him bleed, and was charged for assault. But Judge...

In this Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011 photo Filipino Christian worshippers attend mass at the Ratisbonne monastery in downtown Jerusalem. In the past two decades, the traditional Christian communities of the Holy Land have been joined by newcomers: foreign workers from dozens of different countries who provide the Israeli economy with cheap labor, asylum-seekers from Sudan, Eritrea and elsewhere in Africa who sneak across the border from Egypt, immigrants from the former Soviet Union who are part of the Jewish mainstream but are also practicing Orthodox Christians, and others.
