  • Death of Great Toronto rabbi at 99, Can we Expect Rioting and Avengement of Death?

On February 8, 2012 Rabbi W. Gunther Plaut, a famous and notable Toronto rabbi died. He was Senior Rabbi at Toronto's Holy Blossom Synagogue from 1961 to 1977 and remained active as a commentator on the Torah since. He in fact wrote what is now the standard Reform commentary on the Torah, that is in use in most Reform synagogues. This is the link to his obituary. This interview is both stirring and stunning (link to original) from another tribute: ďWe are not a bomb-throwing group,Ē Plaut intoned in that crisp lightly tinged German-Jewish accent, ďbut I want everyone to...

"And you will be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation." (From this week's Torah portion, Yitro, Exodus 19:6) Before the giving of the Torah, before the Ten Commandments, before the most momentous and splendorous ceremony in history, the Creator explains why. Before "Honor your parents", before "Guard the Sabbath day to sanctify it", before all the 'how', G-d explains why He gave us the Torah; why this trek from the House of Bondage to the Land of Israel. What is the destiny? What is the purpose? "And you will be to Me a kingdom of priests...

...I attended a luncheon for the Holocaust Museum...Each year I ask myself, Why am I here? ...Tis a gruesome tradition. I think of my grandfather, Rabbi Jacob Meyer Rakowski... My grandfather was the...last ó descendant of a rabbinic dynasty hailing back to 11th century France. At age 82, grandpa was gassed in Auschwitz, together with 47 members of my parents' families. I'm retelling this old history because now, with Mitt Romney possibly becoming the Republican nominee, it's important to remember that his...

Though the victims were mostly Jews, the Holocaust has affected all humanity. Not only were non-Jews, notably the Roma, also murdered by the Nazis, but the fact that the crimes were committed in civilized Europe has shaken the very foundations of western culture. ..A touching manifestation of this reorientation is a recent report in the British Catholic Herald about a nun who is likely to be canonized by the Vatican. Mother Riccarda Beauchamp Hambrough was born in England but lived most of her 79 years in Rome, where she died in 1966. In recognition of her many talents, she rose...

A prominent Orthodox rabbi in Toronto has condemned the latest book by celebrity Rabbi Shmuley Boteach and pronounced it is ďforbiddenĒ for anyone to buy or read it.In an open letter published on the Jewish news website The Algemeiner, Rabbi Immanuel Schochet denounced Boteachís newest book, ďKosher Jesus,Ē as ďheretical.ĒThe book ďposes a tremendous risk to the Jewish community,Ē wrote Schochet, an emeritus professor of philosophy and religion at Torontoís Humber College and spiritual leader of the cityís Congregation Beth Joseph.ďI have never read a book, let alone one authored by a purported frum (religious) Jew, that does more to...

Expect a whole lot of whining and harassing from the usual Muslim Brotherhood suspects, but there is no there there.According to newly-released†FBI statistics for 2010, anti-Islamic hate crimes in the U.S. rose in 2010 (160 incidents, 186 offenses, and 197 victims in†2010, compared to 107 incidents, 128 offenses, and 132 victims in†2009). There are many worthy pilgrimage sites all over the world, but none can boast of anything approaching the Church of Ethiopiaís singular claim to fame: the Ark of the Covenant. Ethiopian Christians maintain that the Ark, the portable shrine holding the stone tablets of the original Ten Commandments that were written atop Mount Sinai by the Finger of God, and bearing (according to numerous Old Testament accounts) the Presence and Power of God, was brought to Ethiopia in 950 B.C. Menelik, son of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, is said to have taken it there, and it is...

ASHKELON, Israel -- Israel is closing the books on a rare millennia-old Jewish tradition. Nearly three decades after Israel began airlifting Ethiopia's ancient Jewish community out of the Horn of Africa, Israel's rabbis are now working to phase out the community's white-turbaned clergy, the kessoch, whose unusual religious practices are at odds with the rabbinate's Orthodox Judaism. The effort has added to the sense of discrimination felt by Israel's 120,000 Ethiopian citizens. These sentiments boiled over this month after a group of landlords in the southern town of Kiryat Malachi refused to accept Ethiopians as tenants. The move has prompted large...

I learned how to "Tebow" long before I learned who Tim Tebow was. This is partially because I'm clueless when it comes to professional sports, but mostly because, at this point, the Denver Broncos' starting quarterback is as famous for his Christian faith as he is for his football skills.Don't get me wrong ó Tebow's game is fascinating on its own. A big portion of the Tim Tebow myth comes from the exciting, often bizarre way the quarterback manages to stage comebacks and lead his team to last-minute wins, as he did last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Many Bears...

Both Israeli and Palestinian diplomats are praising Pope Benedictís January 9 address to the diplomatic corps. During the address, the Pope expressed satisfaction that Israeli and Palestinian officials will resume talks through the efforts of Jordanian mediators. ďI am very much pleased that the Holy Father mentioned these new developments which are indeed encouraging--renewing talks after a stalemate of longer than one year is definitely good news,Ē said Mordechay Lewy, Israelís ambassador to the Holy See. ďWe are not a prophet; we donít know what will come out (of the talks) but it cannot be worse than not talking, so...

One of my superstar former students, writing about his experience at one of our nation's premier law schools, sent me a note after reading my MOJ post on marriage, religious liberty, and the "grand bargain." Here is the text, with names removed to protect the innocent: I had a first-hand experience with this reality in law school. One of my constitutional law professors taught the section of our course relating to same-sex marriage under the "inevitability" banner. On a sun-drenched day during the week before Christmas, Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulchre was crowded with pilgrims from Nigeria. They were taking turns kneeling and praying at a marker on the spot where, sacred history has it, Jesus was crucified, entombed, and resurrected. (Other Christians consider the holy place to be the nearby Garden Tomb.) Back in Nigeria on Christmas Day, a wave of murderous bombings by Muslim extremists hit several churches. Plainly, the Christian faith is at once thriving and struggling. Global Christianity, a new report from the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, describes and...

The concept of the Imago Dei ( ¬ďImage of God¬Ē) has fascinated Jewish thinkers since the time of Philo and Ben Sira. For now, we will focus only on two famous medieval thinkers: Saadia Gaon and Maimonides. Saadia points out in his philosophic classic that ◊Ď÷ľ÷į◊¶÷∂◊ú÷∂◊Ě ◊ź÷Ī◊ú÷Ļ◊Ē÷ī◊ô◊Ě (B¬ítse¬ílem ¬ī√©l√∂h√ģm= ¬ďin the likeness of the Divine image¬Ē) is figurative language for God bestowing special honor unto humankind, which He did not confer unto the rest of Creation. This distinctiveness is visible in humanity¬ís ability to exert dominion over the earth (Gen. 1:26). Among modern scholars, biblical theologian D. Clines clarifies the...
